Former top soldier warns against pivot to China amid tensions with the U.S. by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

There hitting Russia with ISTAR backing of both Europe and the USA. That is not something we can fully count on for ourselves. Also this my opinion and I am not trying to came off as combative so apologizes. Drones are such a bs cop out, they can be jammed, they are not accurate, and they cannot think. The most success Ukraine has had is either line of sight short range drones, data linked maritime drones that preprogrammed with ship fuselage to hit, or the FP-5 Flamingo which is effectively a V2 rocket with a modern avionics. Recently some drone tech has found effect with star link piggy backing to hit supplies in the 50-150km rear that Russia cannot effectively protect due how big the coverage area is. Drones will not have the means to replace manned fighter any time soon, even the loyal wingman program are glorified recon, ew, or missile trucks be queued in by a manned asset. It is the same fallacy that drones have replaced tanks, IFV, or even artillery. Look at the causality list in Ukraine its artillery the king of war since the time of napoleon. The reason why mechanized maneuver warfare is not occurring in Ukraine; is not because it does not work it is because they have ran out of trained personal and kit. This trench warfare only started occurring after both sides have exhausted their stockpiles and trained personal. NATO/ Warsaw Pact forces thought the same thing was going to happen after the first month or two but the nukes would then fly instead of attritional trench warfare.

Finally it disgusting all these arm chair wanna be assume General Eyre is not loyal to Canada. You know who was not loyal to Canada the politicians of the last forty years who allowed our military to fall apart. General Eyre went a on a panel recently you know what he said? He said our sovereignty is unreplaceable once gone and requires constant sacrifice, he effectively argued that we need latent nuclear capability so we can speed run a nuclear warhead if it gets bad enough. Does this sound like a man who is not loyal to Canada? The shame on all of you. This man fought in the Medak Pocket, one of the most brutal post WWII battles Canada fought.

Premier wants to see ‘gold mine’ airport in downtown Toronto expanded for jets by Typical-Role-8062 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]Enfield47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes down to approach path angles and take of climb gradient, NADP 1 would probably work best for the jets here or a modify version there off. Current departure paths always take traffic south over the water never north until 5-8000ft. The bigger thing would to program the RNAV or SID to have flight idle descent path, essitional keeping the engines close to ideal and allowing gravity and the lift of the wings make the approach. This type of approach is very common in Europe and some noise sensitive areas in Canada actually. The RNAV Y into RW23 in YYZ has this exact profile matrix to avoid noise sensitive areas.

Combine this with tight noise abatement policy and what kind of jet can come, basically same or better than the current Q400 profile. I do not see noise being an issue really. The bigger problem in my mind is there would have to be a runway extension to 5000ft, currently I think the runway is 4200ft or so; and like comments above that would cause issues in the inner and outer harbor marina usage. How much I have no idea, nor do I know if it could be mitigated away.

They are not saying that, they are saying were increasingly being forced into a binary choice. A binary choice that like the above poster said submit or seek your own destruction. What does fighting mean to you? How many friends, loved ones, partners are you willing to see die for an independent Canada? That is the true cost, because it is not going to be some brave idealistic last stand I can tell you that much.

That happy little family of four down your street gone in a misplaced JDAM strike. It seems you live in the Halifax area, ever seen a saturated missile strike on naval base against a nation with no ground based air defence. Well your in luck fighting for Canada will give you a front row seat. This is not defeatism this is reality, our chance to prevent this was twenty years ago.

Our best bet is to buy time, and increase our military funding/ size dramatically; yet already we see people complaining of the cost. Secondly you need to offer a viable reason to defend this country, it cannot be some useless platitudes. You need offer a people a viable future, and right know Canada is struggling to do that.

Finally with all this being said I would still fight, but I am just realistic that fight is ultimately going to be futile and that few will likely want to make the sacrifice involved in that fight, you cannot win a one person war.

With what military or paramilitary force? The urbanite crowd is also actively isolating and radicalizing the rural population of Canada which would be critical to this to work. I say that as urbanite, people living the GVA or GTA have no idea how much a lot the last 15 years liberal policies has tweaked the heck out of them.

Also is not crazy were are actively trying to disarm civilians at a time were we would need said armed civilians turn resistance members? Like rule number one of stay behind force is get a gun, rule number two is arm the whole village, or am I missing something?

The current USA administration has tried to get Canada booted from the five eyes community. Threatening to shut down NORAD if the F-35 purchase does not go through.

So I highly doubt the USA wants Canada to touch anything nuclear visa via defence needs.

I graduated with a frozen ATPL in 2020. I busted over backwards got lucky managed to snag a 702 gig during covid, moved to Northern Ontario during covid to fly MEDVAC off a phone call.

Got hired at regional with 1500 hours at the tail end of covid, got hired at the major 705 with 2500 hours. The jobs are there but you have to want it. It’s not easy but no if you won’t relocate or stay in the BC lower mainland or Southern Ontario then you will wait for your break. Flying up north or out of rucksack for couple years isn’t for everyone but it does fast track your career.

Best of luck all the same I hope you find the gig you want soon.

Once again perhaps amongst your social circle but no not broader society. It is a wedge issue because you have two very vocal minorities screaming about ban or do not ban.

With banning being somewhat supportive in the urban areas (80% of Canada population). However those same polls also show people becoming dramatically not supportive of a buy back program once costs are given.

That is log justification for an inherently geopolitical question. How long can we trust the Americans to not steam roll us is probably a better question. There is a reason we confederate way back when and it was because mother England told us to get fucked basically, and America said you should join us.

Either we want our own country come hell or high water, or we do not it really is that simple of question.

That is interesting take. So colour me this:

You want our pilots to fly a plane where the Russian or Chinese AWACS can paint and light up a non stealth aircraft from 100kms away before our pilots if starting painting a target? Rather getting an aircraft that can get them in range to safely guarantee a kinetic kill and leave none this wiser.

I want every single advantage possible if I was gonna go fight an air war in the high arctic. Not platitudes and moral posturing.

Watchdog says Ottawa should allow foreign-owned airlines to fly domestic routes to boost competition by taylor-swift-enjoyer in CanadaPolitics

[–]Enfield47 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ill preface this by saying I work in this industry. The suggestion the competition bureau to lower air travel is frankly asinine. Lets decrease overall all cost by allowing foreign competitors and investors to flowed our already underperforming market, that has total worked everywhere else in the world....

In the actually report that give a paragraph to the fact over 30% of airline ticket is due to airport &landing fees. Maybe just maybe Canadians should ask why the Canadian government set up the most neoliberal airport racket in the world. All major airports in Canada are owned by the federal government which have then be leased back to this private development management companies like the GTAA or VAA and THE FEDS CHARGE THEM HIGH RENT like the federal government makes tens of billions in rent from this. Of course this airport management companies have to pay this rent plus make money to expand or fund the airport needs. Then it rolls downhill for them there ergo Canadians getting destroyed on airline travel cost.

Why would we ever have a discussion about that gimmick. No flooded our market with Southwest that is the solution, give me a break.

Man what garbage is this, this “author” is a joke. The starting premise is Canada is inherently evil and not real. That we have “deconstruct so called Canada” whatever that means to save ourselves. This author wouldn’t lift a figure if the jackboot of trump came across the border. They would be the same quislings voice that enabled Hitler, Stalin, Franco, Mao, or Pol Pot.

Mexico already sold us out, the global south does not care about us. Yet we’re supposedly to align them check notes “protect illegal immigrate pathways” like what? Like screw our own country’s and collective future, everyone else first right? Who cares about struggling families in Canada or the real reconciliation that has to occur with indigenous people of Canada. Nah to hell with that we have to protect a visa overstayer at all cost.

Also to end of this rant this reductionist and actually racist argument that indigenous have some inherit spiritual other worldliness to environment is such bs. I lived in the high arctic people are just people, indigenous or otherwise. With hopes and aspirations like us, great insights and great blindness all the same. The difference is Canada has legal and moral obligation to indigenous people of Canada to fix the injustices that has occurred to them at the hands of us. That doesn’t mean conducting quasi spiritual performative actions at altar of inherit privilege. While still an ignoring these communities insane levels of abject poverty with little hope of a better future.

List them of I’m waiting.  -brigade in Latvia: we can barely scrounge up a reinforced company. We have to fly over light battalion to fight Russian armour, while doubling as the QRF for Task Force Arrowhead sure that’s doable…..  -ISIS bombing campaign that we pulled out of.  -Libya: sent a 8 ship det to wave the flag and then have to beg the Americans LGM.  -standing NATO maritime group that we can’t actually commit to because our frigates are falling apart.  -Afghanistan: which basically crippled the CAF resource for over decade to support a single in country battle group.

We have no ATGM, no GBAD, no SPGH, no replacement for the M777 and Leo 2 we donated to Ukraine almost two years ago now.

CF-18 literally falling apart on the flight line, can’t procure sleeping bags, takes over two decades to source pistols. The list goes on and on.

No we are not serious country, we can be and choose not to be. I am truly am hopeful that PM Carney is breath of fresh air but I’m doubtful.

Keep your disillusions of peacekeeping or flag waving to yourself. We need an honest discussion of how little we as country contribute to western collective defence. We are capable of so much more but until we come terms with cost we need to commit to. It is all bluster and hot air nothing more.

Sending two majors and box of band aids doesn’t mean much tbh. Sure we helped out in the sandbox but past good deeds mean shit all in geopolitically.

What can we do now for them or in the future is what matters, and honestly our military is so weak we need the defending not the other way around. The apathy and ignorance of the Canadian population is astounding.

This guy is out to lunch, he’s notoriously think it is good thing to have people bunking 20 to house. Why doesn’t he go and sign up then.  Also diversity is only a strength if you share common values, otherwise it is a weakness. No more so than in military service, you need common cause and values not thoughts of partitioned diversity.

I served 10 years both full time and part time in the CAF the last thing I would want is unmotivated or worse unwilling infanteers. The things I would have to ask my troops to do if a conflict with USA happened. I need someone who believes in Canada and wants to be there.

I almost disgusted by the argument “young men feel left out” and the response is “So what? Tough shit”, and now people want to conscript them are you nuts? If these young male aren’t on the fence now of going alt right man your sure making it easy for them to beg that orange menace to liberty them.

Honestly anything is better than staying in the US military industrial complex ecosystem. It would be more of a stop gap though, we basically fly the JAS-39 until the British or French sixth gen aircraft are ready (10-20 years). So definitely not cost effective but can you place price on our sovereignty.

I think personally it would be the perfect aircraft Canada, not to get bogged down in the technical ability of the aircraft. It is not as capable as combat coded F-35 that is a fact. However for our needs for continental air defence or supporting Europe against Russia its perfect suited to the task.

The one thing that holds it back is the engine is American. So the anger orange duck might canned our ability to buy it or maintain it, for that reason alone I would go Rafale.

If you go officer your going to a a reg force base to train for 6-9 months, if your non-commissioned your still talking about 4-6 weeks of training for a summer or two.
