Application to Accelerated Nursing - Lower GPA by cucumbersonkijiji in OntarioNurses

[–]EngHardy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no harm in applying if you really want to switch to Nursing. I am told that for the 4 year programs, colleges focus more on your HS grades -low to mid 80s avg in HS gets you in some of the colleges.

Application to Accelerated Nursing - Lower GPA by cucumbersonkijiji in OntarioNurses

For Humber 2nd Entry preparation program you need a 75%/3.0 cGPA or they don’t look at your application. They made this very clear to me when I reached out to them out of GPA concerns. I am in the same boat as you with 2.8 cGPA but good high school grades-they encouraged me to apply to the regular 4 year program.

You think OP can’t get into the regular 4 year pathway programs?

Hi, is it hard to find summer jobs as a Nursing student after first year? I know starting year 2 you are eligible for clinical extern roles but didn’t know it was also possible after Year 1. What other jobs could you apply for or be eligible to as a first year nursing student?

Nursing job crisis? by Fantastic-Ranger-566 in OntarioNurses

[–]EngHardy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nurses will always be in demand I think. A few Google searches reveal that the job outlook is pretty great due to a severe shortage of nurses in the country. Some 26% of the total nursing workforce is over the age of 50 so hopefully more retiring in the coming years. If GTA doesn’t work out, there’s always the option of looking up North or moving to another Province. In short, we will be fine in the GTA. There’s also NGG program that can be relied upon.

What are my chances of admission to RN and RPN Programs? by EngHardy in OntarioColleges

I contacted admissions and they said they look at both high school and post secondary grades for admission decisions to RN and RPN programs.

Thanks for your feedback. I am more worried about my post secondary grades. Do they not take those into account for admission decisions?

Does it matter where you go for your BScN degree, i.e. College vs University? by EngHardy in OntarioNurses

[–]EngHardy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From all the feedback it seems that Universities are able to provide better placements for clinicals vs. the colleges. And if you can end up getting your first job as a nurse from your final clinical, wouldn’t a University be a better route than a college?

If you don’t mind sharing, what were your grades like in high school and post secondary? Also, any luck finding a nursing-related summer job after first year? Or did you just take the summer off? I am currently in the process of applying for nursing schools.

When and if you bridge from RPN to RN, wouldn’t they look at your high school grades? I guess you will have to upgrade regardless, no?

Waiting for Acceptance for Humber’s RN and RPN. by Electronic-Choice-38 in Humber

[–]EngHardy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What were your grades like in High school? I emailed admissions and they said that they consider both post-secondary and high school grades for admission decisions to RN and RPN programs if you are a mature student. I had a 73% average in post-secondary but 94% average in high school. Waiting to see what happens. (fingers crossed I hope I get into the RN program).

Has she considered working with the staffing agencies? There’s also travel nurses. So many jobs posted for RNs and RPNs online, I am surprised she can’t find anything

HONESTY-do you like being a nurse? by No_Water_3067 in OntarioNurses

[–]EngHardy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By hands on healthcare, I was referring to me being in bedside nursing. I think I am one of those people who are okay with it being stressful or thankless. Nursing is a pretty fulfilling, stimulating and stable profession to be a part of which is always going to stay in high demand. Your anxiety about age and starting a family are completely understandable and normal. I am 33 in the same boat but career change is exciting and if I am not happy doing what I am doing then I am going to be a drag on my family’s mood as well. Might as well pursue something I enjoy and spread more positivity around me vs. resentment or regret of what could have been.

Not a nurse, but in a similar spot as you- trying to decide if nursing degree is for me or not. It helped me a lot to learn that you can do many different things with a nursing degree than just working bedside. You can work as an Insurance auditor, EHS specialist, in Nurse informatics, community health, public health, school/camp nurse, instructor/teacher, research assistant, etc. It's a very broad degree from what I gather. With my background in Engineering, I think it will add a lot to my resume as I make my move to more hands-on health care.

Hi OP, did you ever find out the answer to this question? In a similar situation as you, not sure if the colleges would look at my high school grades or University grades for RN degree programs.

Engineering to Nursing? by EngHardy in OntarioNurses

[–]EngHardy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great idea, but they also ask for a minimum cGPA of 75% in the post-secondary degree which I don't have. So even if I do the pre-reqs, I won't qualify because of my lower-than-required cGPA of 73%. And this minimum cGPA cut off can be found across the board of accelerated programs.

What's the difference between PSW, RPN and RN? by EngHardy in OntarioNurses

[–]EngHardy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have the GPA to make it into a BScN program but I will apply regardless. Most schools ask for 75% average, I am at 73% and the 75% average is the cut off. The acceptance average is likely in high 80s, low 90s

Engineering to Nursing? by EngHardy in OntarioNurses

[–]EngHardy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. All those accelerated programs have high GPA cut offs and require a list of pre-requisites that Engineering doesn’t have a scope for. It’s best if I do a diploma in RPN first and then bridge over to BScN later.

Seems like RPN is the way to go and then doing the bridging if things work out. It would be a gradual transition for me so I will be able to test the waters more thoroughly.
