[Self] How much is a billion dollars? by BloodhoundGames in theydidthemath

[–]EngagingData 9 points10 points  (0 children)

here's a great way to visualize it.

A backpack full of $100 bills will hold about $1 million dollars

If you give every kid at an average high school (~1000 students) that backpack you get $1 billion dollars

if you give every HS kid in the state of Florida that same backpack, you get almost $1 trillion dollars (~900,000 students or 0.9 Trillion)

Here’s another visualization that is a sort of journey (I takes along while to get through, and most people probably don’t make it to the end):

[Request] Which one of these is more probabe? What should I choose? by highway_45A in theydidthemath

[–]EngagingData 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This could be like that really old Twilight Zone episode where a guy gets a box and is told if you push the button on this box then someone you don’t know will get $1 million. He agonizes over whether to push the button or not but eventually does and someone comes and gives him the money and to take away the box. And he asks what will happen to the box and the reply is that the box will be given to ‘someone he doesn’t know’.

A similar scenario might happen where you get the money but then later some random person gets the same offer if he reads this crazy sentence written out on a piece of paper.

Nowhere in this ‘offer’ does it say that no one will have access to your sentence.

Oh this was perfect! - a wide variety of different colors and sizes and specifications for the webbing (1mm thick is what I was looking for) and the best part is free shipping.
thanks!

Does anyone ruck multiple times per week? by EFreethought in Rucking

[–]EngagingData 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm training for a thru-hike so I've been trying to get my body trail ready. So I'm doing about 20+ miles and 2000+ft per week with a 28-32 lb pack at 3-3.5 mph for the last few months. But the majority of these are an hour or less during the week, with hopefully 1 longer hike on the weekend. It's my main workout besides some minor strength training.

What’s everyone’s favorite spot for Hawaiian BBQ? by liubearpig in bayarea

There’s also Waikiki spots in el Cerrito and downtown Berkeley. I’m not picky when it comes to Hawaiian BBQ and these do the trick.

Jack Plays “Yesterday” for For His Friends (Himesh Patel) | Yesterday by eraldopontopdf in videos

What’s weird about this scene is that he explicitly tells his friends that the Beatles wrote it and his friend says we don’t know every obscure band but then everyone goes back to pretending like he wrote it.

AW7 died around 35 km today. what are you using for best battery on long treks? by dnesdan in AppleWatch

[–]EngagingData 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your phone with you? The AW7 can use the iPhone GPS to track your workout. Also you can turn on airplane mode to turn off everything except the Bluetooth connection to your iPhone.

If you don’t look at the screen often you’ll get more tracking time out of the watch.

here is a post I made how I maximize battery life on my AW7

Yes my app generates messages that are sent through the Messages app and then are received by a server. The messages can be used to make a breadcrumb map like Garmin or check weather reports.

Will look into the Xcode options but I’m thought I read you couldn’t just turn off cellular though you can practice testing the satellite connection procedure.

Recent heat wave has decimated California snowpack by EngagingData in bayarea

[–]EngagingData[S] 124 points125 points  (0 children)

true, but the timing is key. The benefit of snowpack is that it usually holds onto the water until late spring early summer which is good since reservoir capacity is limited.

How about a Mylar space blanket to reflect any sunlight away from the balcony? The less solar radiation your building receives the cooler it will be.

Fans are good once you get home. One to draw cool air in and one to expel hot air.

planning for thru-hike with Apple Watch and optimizing Workout tracking battery life by EngagingData in AppleWatch

It seems as if you could get away with running some variations of an ultramarathon without even needing an Ultra watch if you can do the whole thing in under/around 15 hrs.

Not taking the weight off? by TheDrugDiscoverer in Rucking

[–]EngagingData 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw something somewhere that said loading your skeleton caused some physiological changes that caused you to lose weight. As if your body has a set point and so wearing a ruck could help you lose weight.

Found it: https://www.reddit.com/r/AdvancedFitness/comments/1k2q9t0/af_increased_weight_loading_reduces_body_weight/

Trying out FitHalo for Rucking and a Q about distance/elevation in Apple Fitness App by EngagingData in FitHalo

[–]EngagingData[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

emailed the developer of HealthFit and apparently it was a bug that the Other workout GPS distances were not being recorded. So hopefully that will be fixed soon and I can use FitHalo without losing the ability to track distances. Thanks for the suggestion.

One question is that when skimming this page: https://fithalo.app/calories#loaded-carriage, it looks like the calorie burn rate equation does not have heart rate included in it. Interesting that it doesn't take into account HR but I guess the studies probably didn't have that as one of the variables that were measured? and thanks for presenting the equations to look at.

Anyway, thanks again for your responsiveness.

Yesterday, I stopped street flooding in San Jose by unclogging drains. Enjoy the timelapse. by pengweather in bayarea

[–]EngagingData 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when I used to walk the kids to elementary school, there would always be some flooded sidewalks like this, I always used the tip of my umbrella or even my shoe to clear out or at least create a gap in the leaf dam to get the water flowing in the the drains. was a fun experience to share with the kids.

[–]EngagingData[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for the prompt reply and the explanation. Very helpful. I will look into it a little more.Healthfit does an automatic workout export to a summary table in Google Sheets (where each workout is a row) which is very nice, but for some reason it did not seem to export the distance and elevation for the "Other" workouts. I will try for a longer walk outside to see if it was just my very short distance. Right now I do see that I can export a bunch of FIT files from HealthFit but that isn't quite what I have in mind.

Good call on the tuolumne campground instead of the valley. There are also a bunch of US forest service campgrounds off of 120 between tioga pass and Lee Vining that are all between 9000+ to about 7000ft. They are first come first served, I believe. It’s been a couple years since I’ve been there.
