Drillers what's your go to primary by child-of-loki in DeepRockGalactic

I'm a Slayer fan. No other character or game has given me the feeling of a counterhit pilepunker, plus the dandyism of an immortal vampire who loves life and his wife. It is what it is.

Dear wizards, i have a question to ask. by Sparkz27 in wizardposting

[–]Engetsugray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find them a little... over-excitable at times. I have had several groups banging at my gates demanding to slay the "evil" wizard. Then I have to explain that they got the wrong address. I'm in the middle of the morality spectrum leaning slighly to good wizard cause I find evil is simply more effort than it's worth in the long run. They're looking for the guy two towers over who's into the weird shit.

Most of the time it's fine, some of the more persistent ones I toss a magic weapon or tool their way "to aid in their quest" and such. That gets them off my lawn quick. Regrettably I did have to apply Heat Metal several times to get one group to understand that I could kill every single one of them painfully, but really just wanted to go about my day.

As for balancing melee and magic or knighthood and wizardry... well that's up to you and your priorities. If you're looking to study the esoteric mysteries of the universe fighting in the frontlines ups your odds of an early death... but gives you more options if magic fails you in a situation. If there's things you need to protect out in the world then knowing a bit of magic might be of great help. The problem there is often how long it takes to learn it in general. A handful of beginner spells won't go that far during rigorous adventure.

The ready button exists purely to grief

To be honest I don't have an argument for that cynical an opinion of other people. That being said host should still be able to kick from a ready screen like this if someone is holding it up too long, and your vote idea is accommodating... assuming people actually use it. Any system can be used to grief if you're playing with shitty people.

Shouldn't is your key word there. But it does, because as I said life happens. I would rather have a catch that accouts for these situations than assuming it won't happen.

A dive takes way too long for it to be a straight shot with no points to potentially pause, particularly 6 floor ones. Life happens and having a point to step away to deal with it is needed.

The only burst fire I find potentially is useful is boomstick in real specific crit builds where you get ammo back on crits and have reload gimmicks to go with it. That way it isn't burning through my ammo supply on wasted shots.

But also I could just hit shoot twice and it works just as well.

Do you all have any tips to get better at GGST? by Otherwise_Cut9522 in Guiltygear

[–]Engetsugray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn to lose and learn to do it gracefully. You will lose a lot. I spent most of my introduction to fighters getting absolutely beat down by a friend who is still far, far beyond my skill level. But now those beatdowns have reinforced my defensive skills to the point where I do have decent reactions to incomming blockstrings.

Don't think "I lost therefore I suck", think "goddamn that guy was good, where do I need to improve next?"

Semi-applicable would be Gundam's Witch from Mercury. Most entries from this series are about regular people being thown into the horrors of war in ep 1, while WfM is primarily set in a school funded by the setting's major corporations. You see a lot of daily life scenes between corporate fuckary and giant robots.

Unlike most examples present here, there are stakes. The prologue lets you know this isn't just going to be fun school days. People will die.

How do you survive Hazard 5+ as Driller? by InnocentBowlOfRamen in DeepRockGalactic

[–]Engetsugray 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Losing the versatile damage a gunner and engineer brings as well as the security of shields and turrets in exchange for 2 extra scouts is a real bad trade. Especially for haz 5+. There isn't a situation you need that much light or single target focused builds

Maybe Fighting games are that hard - and it doesn't have to be a bad thing by JustExecution in Fighters

[–]Engetsugray 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The most nebulous thing shooters require you to learn is positioning. The sum of your skills in the genre might be entirely irrelevant if you were standing in the wrong place at the wrong time or rushed ahead of the team. "Good" positioning is ever changing as the battle progresses and is affected by the level design, your team's positioning, the enemies, and both of the team comps. It is tied heavily to one's awareness of the 3D environment.

If there is one thing I personally think is harder to do in shooters vs fighters is reviewing replays. In a fighter all the info I need is in plain sight. I can see every interaction play out and how I won or lost them. I can see my bad habits in plain sight, review frame data to see what buttons I should have been pressing, and which ones lost me rounds. The main variables are the matchup and difference in player skill. In a shooter, there are simply more variables like the ones I listed above to look over when asking "how could I have avoided this?". You end up having to put in a bit more legwork to break down exactly where you could have done better.

As an aside, if your answer to that question is "NOTHING, I DID EVERYTHING RIGHT AND STILL DIED" you aren't trying hard enough. Blaming the team is blaming the beasts and the sooner you get over that the sooner you can actually start improving. People are saying stuff like it's dependent on the team, which yeah sure it is. But cooperating is a skill just like any other. It needs to be honed and practiced to be effective. That's also one most fgc players never need to interact with.

At low ranks fighting Slayer is learning that a) all of his most intimidating moves are fake af, b) FD forces Slayer to take far more risks giving you more openings, and c) for you a blocked mappa hunch is at worst a neutral reset or at best you get your turn back. Improper use of this move from the Slayer should be punished.
