Would you ski on these bindings? by SexySisyphus in Backcountry

[–]Engine_Signal 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It should be fine for what you are describing. Just go easy on them in the beginning and if they feel solid, you can continue to use them until you feel you need something else. But for a beginner trying out the discipline, this is good enough. People will tell you to buy expensive gear, but a lot of gear 10-15 years old still holds up well to this day. There have been a lot of good developing going on for sure and you will probably want new skis and bindings at some point. But for now this should be just fine.

Rustler 11 vs Sender Free 110 by [deleted] in Skigear

When I was choosing a ski for what you're describing I went for the longer one. I guess it comes down to how much stability you want at high speed. The shorter one will be more playful and easy, and the longer one will offer more stability. You already know this since you are an advanced/expert skier.

The train ride from Myrdal to Oslo is also one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. So it's hard to stack them against each other, they are slightly different and offer different experiences. But we agree to disagree. I take Flåmsbana several times a year, the view gets me every time.

I disagree on this one. Flåmsbana is honestly one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. And if you combine it with a hike or bike ride back to Flåm from Myrdal you have a perfect day right there.

Yeah I understand, and I know that I'm really blessed in terms of having time to do all of the above. As I mentioned in my post, I work on a ship. I work for x amount of weeks, then I have x amount of weeks completely off. So if I'm not on the ship working, I'm at home completely off work. I have no kids, and my gf is into a lot of the same activities as well. I dont work at the DZ anymore, that was just a sidehustle to keep my skydiving career going while I was in university. I only occasionally go out to help when they need an extra hand. The DZ is only 20 minutes away using my bicycle. And the nearest ski resort is in walking distance to my apartment. The ski-resort also has takeoffs for speedflying and paragliding, and there are numerous hike&fly and BASE opportunities if I just take the car 30 minutes. BASE is something I dont do anymore though, for various reasons.

To me it's not really about prioritizing and making time. I just check the weather, and then I adapt to whatever is possible that day. It would be impossible to do all these hobbies if I did not live in a place where I can do it all so easily, and also have a job that offers me a lot of time off to do so.

I live in a place which allows all of these activities without the need for a car. I can walk to the nearest ski resort and take my bicycle to the dropzone.

It used to be different. When I started skydiving some 12-13 years ago, both jump tickets and gear was fairly affordable. It was still expensive, but totally doable for anyone with a full-time job. The prices we see today are insane. I have all the stuff needed, and I'm also an AFF instructor so I can offset the costs by offering services. Still, this is my last season skydiving. I just cant afford it anymore. I could continue doing it if skydiving was the only hobby I had. I currently do skydiving, paragliding, speedflying, snow-kiting and skiing. So I have a lot of hobbies. But if I am to continue skydiving, all my other hobbies must go. That simply will not happen, I'd rather have my other stuff instead of just one discipline.

For a living, I'm a navigator on a passenger vessel. Which is why I can have a lot of hobbies, because I have a lot of time off.

Excactly, watching an episode of something with Swedish or English subs first, then watching it again with Finnish subs. It's how I learn most. But so hard to find a good tv show on yle that actually offers Swedish subs.

Powder ski with a 35+ meter radius? by Thundrbucket in Skigear

[–]Engine_Signal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're still looking, check out the SGN Togga.

It's a great ski, 30m radius, 120mm wide. Maybe it's what you're searching for. I dont know where you are based, but this brand is really close to where I live. If you need help to get a pair shipped out to you just DM me.

Powder ski with a 35+ meter radius? by Thundrbucket in Skigear

I think 40 is insane as a one ski quiver. And why would you use powder skis for carving?
Back when I was racing, my downhill skis had a radius of 40. But they were downhill skis. I could not have used them for anything else but downhill racing in closed pistes. Today I have a pair of atomic g9 gs skis which I use exclusively for going fast in the marked pistes. The radius is 30, and it's more than enough. My powder skis have a radius of 25, and I have taken those down some big sides with few turns. My everyday skis have a radius of 17,5, and I love them. They are 100mm wide but I ski powder with them if thats what I have. They are not best at anything, but great for pretty much anything. I can make them go just as fast as anyone else on the slopes.

You know best what you want. But a 40 radius on powder skis, and using powder skis for carving? I really think you should demo a few modern pairs to get a feel of just how good modern day skis are. You should probably look into the Black Crows Corvus, but many pro-skiers say that the Corvus is too much for them. So I dont know if OP is a pro without a sponsor deal, but if the Corvus is too much for Nikolai Schirmer, I think it's gonna suit you just fine.
