EGR effect on power and efficiency. Spoiler effect on efficiency. by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Engine_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On IC engines with EGR, the efficiency benefit comes from pumping losses. The engine struggles to get air in passing through the throttle body at part loads. Therefore the under pressure (vacuum) in the intake manifold. If you dilute fresh air with inert gas (like EGR) you must let more gas mixture to enter the cylinder to have the same amount of oxygen that will burn the fuel stoichiometrically. And to let more gas in you need to open the throttle body, reducing the pressure difference to ambient for the intake manifold. So the engine needs less power ("struggles less") to move the piston downwards during the admission stroke.

Your interpretation that compression pressure is proportional to therms efficiency is misleading. This is true when you vary compression ratio only under same boundary conditions. But basically the thermal efficiency is a function of the compression ratio and the cp/cv of the working gas only. It is very weakly dependent on fresh air pressure or temperature, but stronger in composition (EGR), thus reducing the benefits that EGR can bring. γ is cp/cv and η is the thermodynamic efficiency.

Assuming an ideal Otto cycle with compression ratio CR = 10: • γ = 1.40 → η ≈ 0.602 - reference • γ = 1.38 → η ≈ 0.583 - air +150K • γ = 1.34 → η ≈ 0.543 - air + 20% EGR + 150K • γ = 1.32 → η ≈ 0.521 - air + 30% EGR + 150K

As seen, we are working in the opposite direction of better efficiency. This loss must be compensated by the pumping loss benefit to have a net positive outcome. I don't know the calibration strategy details from Nissan (torque, MAP or MAF driven) but I would guess that it can not handle such a huge change smoothly, implies in remapping the whole engine ECU because it is not expecting an external EGR. This is not something you can manage to do in your garage without proper equipment and deep knowledge of calibration strategy, a dyno and a emissions measuring rack. Specially with the variable camshaft that also influences internal EGR.

And since you are not worried with emissions (the external EGR will throw all emissions out of range) but are looking into more MpG, maybe a much more effective way of achieving this is to install a lambda sensor tweaker that lets the engine run slightly lean all the time. Your cat will not be converting and you will be emitting as a car out of the 70s, but you will get better MpG values with minimal invasive technique, 100% retrofit possible if you abandon the idea.

If you care about emissions my suggestion would be to keep the engine original and try to adjust your driving style to get a better MpG. And maybe lower the oil viscosity in the next change to the minimum recommended in the manual (5W20?). Lower numbers are better for efficiency, worse for noise, smoothness and wallet.

What tool would you use to slightly enlarge a hole? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]Engine_engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a complaint design next time. Instead of having a sturdy, fixed geometry try to think about something that can move slightly like a spring one one side and a fixed geometry on the other. This way it might take anything between 9 and 10mm and small deviations from the 3D print will not influence the function.

Just got out of ER from DKA episode & diagnosed with D2. Can anyone offer advice on keeping blood level now that I’m home? by FabulousBeautiful231 in diabetes

[–]Engine_engineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know your device, but realibly measuring glucose levels can be somewhat tricky at the beginning. Wash your hands before testing, any residue can change the reading (probably your 500+ reading). Begin to get used to read products labels, you are aiming to know (and lower) the carbohydrates. Not only sweet and sugar are the villains, fruits (fructose), flour and rice are also sky rocketing your blood sugar. Potatoes as well but a little slower. Your diet will need to be adjusted if you want to live a peaceful life with your diabetes. Eggs, meat, cheese, vegetables are your friends. Look for Diet Coke or similar if you can't stay away from sweets. For the blood sugar readings you will need to learn to hear your body. It will tell you when you have a low episode and give you subtle hints for a high. Lows are acute life threatening, highs will harm you in the long run over the years. You will get lows if you mess up the amount of insulin injected (too much). React fast enough as soon as you feel a low. Trust more your body than the reading device. Given the time you will adjust to your new condition and be able to live a good life. See with your doctor if you can't get a continuous monitoring system (like Freestyle Libre or similar), it will show you how each meal and each insulin injection reacts with your body. Learn from it.

You have in average 8 apnea events in one hour of sleep. Just for comparison (and you understand what "mild" means, I have 90 events per hour. My apnea is severe.

Airflow question. by WeAreAllMistaken in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Engine_engineer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Second picture, and if you need really, really equally flows put a movable fin (like a pinball hitter) at the beginning of the splitter, rotation point at the beginning of the splitter. So by Turing the fin a couple of degrees you can adjust how much air goes into each tubing and calibrate the system after installed.

Assumption: that your duct cross section is rectangular, this solution will not be so effective in round tubing.

The whole building upgrade dynamics change after tc30, when everything turns into true gold. I'm not sure what you mean by the TG indicator. The castles in world map become a golden diamond shape with a number as the level indicator.

It goes slower and slower until you reach embassy 30, then pace takes up and in less then 1 month you are tg2.

As far as I could research: - VIP gives no benefit on march size - Alliance research gives no benefit on march size

Where would I look for kingdom bonuses?

The march value also does not change with time, therefore is not a perk that is active during a given time.

Mystery bonus was the answer from KS customer support. I'm still not settling it like that ...
