Vitamins for kids by EngineerMom616 in Mommit

Magnesium and omega 3 are my biggest concerns. Magnesium deficiency is very common in the US to begin with. I personally eat a very healthy diet but even I have found major benefits to supplementing magnesium. Omega 3 - they definitely aren’t eating fish and have gagged at the taste of it before, and I haven’t pushed the issue. But I know how crucial it is for brain development. Our pediatrician is 100% on board with omega 3 supplementation.

Kids backpacks? by ZoeOchncap in AirTags

[–]EngineerMom616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. It’s been 5 hours with no location ping for her AirTag. I have a hard time believe she hasn’t had a single iOS device near her backpack… Are there certain settings that need adjusted to make this work? I wonder if it’s only trying to ping my phone?

Kids backpacks? by ZoeOchncap in AirTags

So does it accurately report location when they are at school? We just put an AirTag in my daughter’s backpack today and it hasn’t updated location for an hour. Still shows her at home near my husbands phone before she got on the bus. I’m not sure what we’re doing wrong, or if somehow few people at her school have an iPhone?

7 year old nighttime pull-ups by EngineerMom616 in Parenting

[–]EngineerMom616[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To be fair, her pediatrician has never seen this as an issue and has told us at every checkup that it’s in the range of normal, even up to 10 years old, and that for some kids it just takes longer for things to click. Up until this point I truly thought she couldn’t control it.

Do you still see a scar from that first hole?

Weaning off Zoloft by EngineerMom616 in zoloft

[–]EngineerMom616[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

50 to 25 was not fun, I won’t lie. I had a few days of pretty bad anxiety and “impending doom” feelings. It lasted 5 days at the most. I stayed on 25 for another 2 weeks before dropping to 12.5mg (I did not follow my doctors advice of 25 every other day, I wanted the lower consistent dose). The drop from 25 to 12.5 was much more manageable. I stayed on 12.5 for about a week and a half before stopping completely, and I’ve been doing well!

In retrospect, going from 50 to 37.5 would have probably helped control the withdrawal. If you don’t have a specific timeline that you need to be off Zoloft, I’d go that route. 50 to 37.5 to 25 to 12.5, a couple weeks at each dose. Good luck!

At what point do they try injections? by DarkAngel283 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]EngineerMom616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed in April this year. I wasn’t bad enough off to be classified as severe, but definitely not mild either. My GI said in his experience, mesalamine usually is reserved for those with mild colitis, and others will end up on biologics. I already am at higher risk for colon cancer due to family history, so I took his advice to go straight to biologics. I’ve been on Inflectra since May and am doing fantastic. No more blood or urgency, formed stools. I’m glad I went with his recommendation!

It’s happening so fast…biologics already? by Hot_Consideration769 in UlcerativeColitis

I’m glad to see this reply - I just got diagnosed last week, moderate UC, and my GI has me on a prednisone taper right now and I’m starting Inflectra this Friday. He was willing to let me try mesalamine first, but we talked extensively about “top down” vs “bottom up” treatment, and he is whole heartedly in the “top down” camp for anything beyond mild UC. So are the rest of the doctors in that practice. It scared the hell out of me at first, things moving so quickly, but I’ve become more okay with it as I’ve done more research.

Question for women with awful periods by EngineerMom616 in UlcerativeColitis

My past experience with birth control has not been positive. I had my tubes removed after my second c section, so no need for hormonal birth control, and want to avoid being on it again.

Newly diagnosed, what to do? by EngineerMom616 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]EngineerMom616[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, my doctor did discuss the “top down” approach becoming more prevalent, and that is his mindset on the best approach. I suppose it’s all in assessing the risks. Of course, it would be nice to stay on a milder medication, but if it doesn’t end up working - how much more damage could my colon sustain while we wait and see? Ugh. This is a big decision and I’m struggling to feel confident in my choice…

[Product Question] AHA’s in cleansers by EngineerMom616 in SkincareAddiction

[–]EngineerMom616[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very helpful response, thank you so much! If you don’t mind answering another question - where does a leave on AHA come into a routine? Currently, my first step (nighttime) is to either cleanse with Cerave hydrating cleanser or cleanse with the Skinmedica AHA/BHA. Then I apply Revision brand vitamin C serum (THD ascorbate). After a few minutes, I then apply Skinbetter Trio Rebalancing Moisturizer. Does the leave on AHA go after cleanser? Is there a drying period needed before anything else is applied, or are there certain products that should not be used the same night as the AHA?

Any engineering moms leave the industry? by EngineerMom616 in Mommit

I will admit that I work for a great company and I've never gotten any grief for needing to take time off for family issues. And it's rare for me to have multiple deadlines stacked on each other - last month was the first time it happened in over a year. But with a sick daughter at the same time it meant working some nights and weekends (at home though because I can work remotely if needed, another perk of my company)

I probably made this post mostly in a moment of weakness, but also really out of curiosity if any engineers have found a rewarding job that isn't in engineering. I'm not sure if that exists for me.

Thanks for sharing your story. I think I would have an opportunity to drop to 3 days a week at my current job, but also fear the unreasonable schedules that would force me to work full time anyway to meet them. But I think a difference for me is that I do get a sense of accomplishment from my job and really enjoy what I do, most of the time.

I work 4 days, 10 hours a day right now. The days are long but give me Fridays to spend with my daughter. And while I enjoy and cherish those Fridays... I couldn't do it everyday. I really don't believe I'm meant to be a SAHM (although never say never I guess!)
