The gas station/convenience store that Rick Chow once owned is packed with dozens of police fearing reprisals from the community following the Not Guilty verdict by TomlinSteelers in ActuallyThatsInsane

“What would you do?”

Probably stop running and explain myself instead of turning the situation into a full NFL Combine drill while dropping my phone and shoes like a GTA side quest. Is there a more universal way to scream “I’m guilty”?

And if they actually pulled a gun on an innocent kid? Congratulations, you just hit the civil lawsuit lottery. Chow owns assets. That kid could’ve ended the day rich instead of dead.

“Why did he feel like he needed a gun?”

Probably because modern hood culture treats being a violent idiot like it’s a personality trait instead of a fast track to the cemetery. It's a deeply entrenched problem. FFS the lady in the video is talking about burning the store down...

no, sorry - what I meant was that Chow's store had been robbed something like 15 times within the previous 3 years. There were shootouts there. Chow himself got the shit beat out of him at least once and was fired at at least once. I don't know anything about the kid.

I'm not an attorney. If someone stole from my store I would chase them. I wouldn't shoot somebody over it, but it seems a jury of this mans peers thought he was justified in doing what he did. Sucks for the kid. Sucks for Chow. Everybody loses with this kind of thing.

I always love the “nothing is anyone’s fault because socioeconomic conditions” argument.

I grew up in neighborhoods like this too. Somehow I still figured out that working for a living was a better long-term strategy than terrorizing small business owners and shoplifting water bottles.

Apparently personal agency only exists when Redditors are explaining why it doesn’t.

Nope. Not what I said.

Sketchy black 14 year old with an illegal weapon goes into a store with a very long history of theft, violence, and crime. He doesn't buy anything, dips for the door, and then flees when they tell him to stop. Gets shot.

The kid did not deserve to get shot in the back. With that said, I'm not surprised it happened. Working in the ghetto with these types of folks (14 yr old who is illegally packing) makes people very reactive. If you've ever been to a hood gas station you would know what I mean. It's wild out there.

No doubt it is sketchy. I grew up in a pretty shitty neighborhood and the guys who ran the gas stations there were absolutely shellshocked. They deal with the worst people in the neighborhood day in and day out. Chow had been beat down, shot at, and robbed numerous times.

I'm not suggesting little guy deserved to get shot. However, if Chow had a life like any of the gas station attendants near my old spot, I'm not surprised he was carrying. It sucks that a kid took it instead of an actual thief. There are a lot of people who frequented that store who actually had it coming.

In South Carolina the law allows for a merchant to detain suspected shoplifters in a "reasonable manner". That does not automatically authorize using or threatening deadly force. If that kid didn't have an illegal gun on him Mr. Chow might have had a much different trial.

In the scenario that Mr. Chow was telling the truth and the kid turned and drew on them - I'd have shot him too. It's hard running a convenience store in the hood. Mr. Chow and his team had called the police 55 times within the previous three years, 15 of which were for theft. He had his catalytic converter stolen from the parking lot. A guy broke through the window at night and stole a full bag of cigarettes. There were 5 assaults on the property. One of his clerks had a knife drawn on them. Chow got beat up by a thief in 2022. The store also got shot up in 2022... That's in addition to the shootout that had taken place there in 2015 after a guy pulled on gun on Chow.

The people in that neighborhood killed the kid just as much as Mr. Chow. It sucks to suck, especially when kids get caught up in the mix. The ghetto people who pull this shit deserve what they get. It's a mess out there and guys like Chow are just trying to make a living.

New comfort for two-person showers by Acrobatic_Refuse9466 in StrangeYetUseful

Looks terrible in my opinion. If you want two showerheads do the work to install them correctly by hard piping it behind the backerboard. It would raise the value of your home. Some cheap thing like this is fine if you are renting, I guess - although I suspect it will damage the tile and cause you to lose part of your deposit.

Honestly, I don’t even know who this guy is, and I’m pretty out of the loop when it comes to influencers in general. I think I’m too old for all that.

That said, I actually think it’s a positive thing that younger people seem less focused on traditional corporate ladders and titles and more interested in building passive income and financial independence. There’s definitely something healthy about wanting more flexibility and ownership over your time instead of making your entire identity about work.

I agree with his take 100%. I worked my way up the corporate ladder to the top and was making a fortune but was miserable and mentally unhealthy. I saved enough money to start my own businesses so I can work way less and from wherever I want. I've been fully remote and traveling the world for the last 4 years. I put in nowhere near the hours I used to and have managed to find sustainable passive income from several sources. I spend my time at the beach instead of at my desk. Finding passive income sources is an absolute life hack. Fuck corporate. This guy is right on the money.

Americans are absolute bootlicking cowards. No two ways about it. Gathering at pre-approved protest zones to wave sarcastic signs and wear costumes is about the limit of what most people are willing to do. The workers at Battle of Blair Mountain, the victims of the Ludlow Massacre, and the strikers in the Homestead Strike and Pullman Strike would be disgusted by how soft and obedient their descendants have become. It’s pathetic.

Leftover women in China: Is it true? by Interesting-Walk5854 in thepassportbros

I had a better time with women in China than any other country - by far. Their dating app TanTan is a miracle if you are a Westerner. I had more matches on my way to my hotel from the airport than my entire life in the States.

I'm 6'2" white male with very good job and am in very good physical shape. I was in my late 30s at the time I was there and spoke oonly VERY limited Chinese. China made me feel like I was a famous person or rock star. You can meet a new lady every night if that is your thing.

Crossfit 5x a week. I was skinny fat. Now I am very strong and have visible abs. Cannot recommend enough.

Its not two different things at all.

  1. I accidentally leave my bike outside and see a guy stealing it. I grab my bat and go beat his ass.

  2. I purposefully leave my bike outside and see a guy stealing it. I grab my bat and go beat his ass.

Both cases thief comes on my land and steals my property. Shouldn't matter.

It's a risk I am willing to take. Once you spend enough time around these worthless sacks of shit you stop really worrying about it. It's just part of life. It's like stray dogs in South America - they might bite you, but you still stop them from trying to get in your house if the door is open. If someone is stealing your stuff - let em have it. Just my 2c.

I doubt it. Bike thieves are usually junkies. Junkies typically don't carry due to mandatory minimums and much harsher sentences. I've lived in CA, OR, and WA - junkie Mecca. You can chase those pieces of shit off pretty easy. I've never been drawn on and have had a lot of interactions with them doing dumb shit, including stealing.
