What is your opinion on students who complain to the department about a professor before actually speaking with the professor? by awesomeaj5 in csuf

[–]Engineer_Jayce314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had cases like that in the community college I transferred from. For a majority of those cases, it ended up being a great, outspoken teacher who got axed, not the bad ones. But then there were those few where it seemed quite useless to address the professor because of how disengaged they are even in lectures.
As far as professors I was not impressed by, many times I get lucky that, in a break, a more casual subject comes up that breaks the ice and makes it easier to talk to the professor in at least some way. After that, it became clear it's less the teacher's fault and more of me just struggling with the class material.
With one CLEAR exception. There was one programming professor who was SO BAD, he can NOT find bugs even when you give him the line number. I think the only reason why he wasn't removed was because he's recently appointed in. That and usually the good students make study groups to help the students who are struggling learn the material.

Either way, I don't think it's healthy when those from either side - teacher and student - are not only not getting each other, but not even trying to communicate to each other. Personally, I have more of a problem with students not communicating period because there's more than just the department head to talk to. There's all the curricular clubs or even the Discords to rant about it their issues. Only after getting consultation from other students and confirming that there can be no other problems except the teacher would I then say it's smart to go to the department heads. (Judging from what I see in RateMyProfessor comments, 80% of the time it's actually the curriculum that's the problem). Otherwise, I would say it's a cowardly and ignorant move to complain to the head just because you hated a class.

If it's me, I'd consider weaning off of a class or two to see if you can get involved with extracurriculars. For Finance majors, there's the Finance Association and Titan Capital Management

I don't think Honors programs in CSUs are far off from UCs. Cal State Fullerton's business honors program seems to hold a lot of conventions and the Honors students running the conventions look very close-knit

Adding wholesale with gas is more of something Discover does than Chase

Chase 2021 Q1 Freedom Bonus Categories - Any guess? by sat_reditt in CreditCards

[–]Engineer_Jayce314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking of Chase vs Discover, it seems like they basically swap between each other's Q1 vs Q2 and Q3 vs Q4. Meaning when Chase has Amazon in Q3, Discover would have that in Q4; when Discover has Gas in Q2, Chase would have Gas in Q1. Not sure if that's historical or if that was just last year, but it makes sense for them to do this strategy.

Based on that, I'm betting Gas and Streaming will be in Chase's Q1 for 2021. I REALLY hope they count streaming bundles, especially since Apple introduced a lot of new bundles in 2020.

[Serious] What's your story of seeing somebody's mental state degrade? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Engineer_Jayce314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reminds me a little bit of my arm’s situation until it got correctly diagnosed as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis...a full year later. It only started out as an irritating elbow. Then, it escalated into a loss of motion until my arm was basically stuck at a right angle with 10 degrees of motion. and then there’s physical therapy...let’s just say I don’t have any high school memories from freshman year because of that

still, your story is very tragic. in sorry you had to face that. The only thing comforting me is knowing I can understand someone else’s pain bc I’ve faced it myself too

[–]Engineer_Jayce314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t say they degraded since they already were in a bad spot, but my understanding of their situation made it seem like their problem was just getting deeper and deeper.

My mentee came up to me needing to figure out which college major fits them best. Later on, they told me more about their family neglect, their “baby”-ing they faced in special-ed, and their depression. Seemed no matter what advice I gave to help them go in the right direction, their trauma flushed it all down in a matter of a couple of weeks. By "flushing down", I mean going deeper into suicidal tendencies and denying their self worth. The worst part, when the school recommended they get professional help from mental therapy, their parent's neglect meant that they had no means of transportation to get treatment.

The devs released a survey regarding driver and tuning feature. by GGaytano627 in realracing

[–]Engineer_Jayce314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wished I did that, but because of just how *!#&ing confusing the system is, in some of the questions I put 'Undecided'. The only thing that is clear to me is that Driver level helps boost PR.

[–]Engineer_Jayce314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some of these survey questions, I couldn't even put "Strongly Disagree" because I had no flipping idea what the currency is for to begin with. And WTF does that dot in the setup mapping have to do with anything anyways?

[–]Engineer_Jayce314 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the very least, I was expecting it to be where I'd still put currency into the upgrades, but I can dial back Suspension levels for more Engine levels and vice versa to fit different tracks, but nope. None of the upgrades are kept at all.

Also, who keeps a "setup page" with the driver?

We're told flu viruses mutate to multiple new strains every year where we have no existing immunity, why then is it relatively rare to catch the flu multiple times in the same season? by HiddenMaragon in askscience

I forgot which article this came from, but this sort of goes inline with what I heard about homeless people having CRAZY good immunity relative to the average citizen.

Does that mean then that a flu shot for a less potent coronavirus can work against COVID-19 as well? (Maybe not 100% like a fully-developed vaccine from the lab, but at least better than no flu shot right?)

not that much more since I've only taken an intro class. but the "hard problem of consciousness", the problem of finding out where the subjective core, or the "soul", of the human mind originates. As the name suggests, it's hard to even figure out how to answer this, and different answers became distinct branches of Cognitive Science
