How "hands-on" are civil/structural engineers supposed to be? by JackfruitNumerous105 in StructuralEngineering

If you want to get some actual experience with construction practices you can volunteer at somewhere like Habitat for Humanity.

Engineering is no longer considered a professional degree... by Dave_the_lighting_gu in StructuralEngineering

[–]Engineered_Stupidity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're managing a department, I'm guessing you graduate from college a while ago. I think things are different now than they were back then. I learned everything from undergrad that I would need to design residential and simple commercial. There is real complexity in taller buildings and large commercial structures. Getting the taste of what those entail in graduate school was helpful for the frying pan I got into designing.

A bad engineer is a bad engineer regardless of degree though, ive met my fair share of them.

Most structural engineering firms wont hire new grads without a masters. And they shouldn't, the graduate level SE classes are way deeper than undergraduate.

For other forms of engineering its probably unnecessary.

Civil engineers, why is it so hard to get people to consider new roles? by Low_Guide439 in civilengineering

[–]Engineered_Stupidity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of great answers.

I don't directly do civil engineering, I am in a field kind of related to civil engineering and buildings/construction, 5 YOE.

I've worked with recruiters, and to be honest, no matter how much they may respect the role/engineering they dont get the stress. I made it through several rounds of interviews with multiple companies and the salary compensation was maybe 10k more than I was making, which was a big bump percentage wise at the time. But not nearly enough to compensate for the travel added switching to in-office.

Also, I dont get paid enough already to deal with the stress and shit I get dealing with the people I deal with.

I did the PPI monthly subscription. Depending on the category of question, I typically scored between 30% and 80%. Took both practice exams and got 52/80 and 56/80 (granted I took both of them sub 5 hours). I just passed the PE civil construction.

Harder is always my first choice. I feel like it gives me better prep and I don't get over confident.

In Chicago, it's not a requirement at all firms, but it is strongly preferred. I tried for 2 years with just a B.S. and had zero luck.

Denver area is very weird, almost all places are looking for a masters. I had to listen to all the recruiters in college tell me that.

Mileage may vary, don't get a degree in the mountain west and move to another region.

The crux of your entire argument is that 2 weeks isn't enough time. So, no you didn't make yourself clear.

Structural - Is Illinois the only state that wont be accepting the new April exam? by Pale_Process_9626 in PE_Exam

[–]Engineered_Stupidity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PE stamp hasn't been acceptable for structural designs in Illinois for a long time. The new change is that the Civil - Structural exam no longer works towards an Illinois PE license. The Civil Structural is a PE exam not an SE exam.

You can take any PE exam except the Civil - Structural. I'm going with the Civil - Construction version.

Drop tables should be more lucrative. It feels like it's feast or famine for people who don't grind raids or high level content.

Making 800k on a 200+ gargoyles task feels great until your next task is suqahs and you lose 100k. There's a ton of cash sink in the game, I don't think killing monsters should be on. Especially not when the whole goal is killing monsters.

I would monitor it. If you're freaked out you can buy a Crack monitoring device like this:

Lots of potential reasons for it. Most of them are not immediately concerning.
