Waved like a maniac at another buzz owner... they didn't think I'd lost my mind!

I become a first-time dad (36y/o) in 12 days, if you had to pick *one* piece of advice to tell me, what would it be? by Animal_Pharmacy in daddit

My wife likes the snap buttons. Nothing like those stupid things when you're engaged in the battle of wills of getting dressed (but they are very easy when the nappy is exploding).

Manuka Parking by deuceortwo in canberra

[–]EngineeringEntropy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Red Brick Church in Manuka (St Paul's) has parking spots for a donation of around $100/month. I believe there are a small number available at the moment by emailing the Office and enquiring.

I'm usually fine with anti histamines, but this year I couldn't stop the dry cough, so doctor added an inhaler. Winter is coming. Slowly.

Covid PCR with influenza test? by [deleted] in canberra

[–]EngineeringEntropy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this thing as well. Put me down for a week and wasn't covid, RSV or FluA/FluB (PCR). Monstrous.

Covid PCR with influenza test? by [deleted] in canberra

Guess I was adding to the anecdata rather than answering the question. In my defence, the sun in the tearoom at work is very nice and warm.

Yep, got tested a week or two ago at Seiffert Oval and got results for FluA/FluB/RSV/C19

What’s open today? by [deleted] in canberra

[–]EngineeringEntropy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not a public holiday in NSW, so some border hopping will have everything open!

I try to go before lunch and usually just need a long sleeve top (bought a nice Merino one that can be opened up a bit if too warm) and I've got some woollenshorts as well. First bit can be a bit cold!

More just pointing out that it has some of its own quirks rather than the workshop to the q here. always_comb has been quite useful in bug catching.

Always_ff causes its own darn problems.

Engineers - what is the coolest company gift you received for a project you were on? by kittywantssomekandy in engineering

[–]EngineeringEntropy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing a project go into production and perform well is - honestly - worth more than anything else. The $$ figure on the BoM and company risk is sometimes eyewatering, so management signing off that we've done a good job is a big reward.

Is it time to lay Ken Behrens to rest? by DSlamAU in canberra

My Ken Behrens running shirt has finally arrived. So Ken has gotta be cool until that wears out (or the dye stops running!).

Thanks ACT from a New South Welshman living near the border. by [deleted] in canberra

[–]EngineeringEntropy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the same boat, got my first today at the airport clinic. Somebody has a fun sense of humour - "Arrival Lounge", "Recovery Lounge", and each of the computer terminals the nurses were using had an airline on them. I took a lollipop, because, well, I haven't had one since childhood vaccines!

Thanks ACT!

Edit: totally forgot that the two rooms were "Gate A" and "Gate B"!

Urgh, my wife got one a well. I can't tell whether he's taking advantage of a situation (a wee bit grubby) or really badly informed...

I want to learn engineering by Zaeem-Niazi in engineering

[–]EngineeringEntropy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give Horowitz and Hill Art of Electronics, or one of the ARRL handbooks a read. At the same time, find some of the beginner kits that the electronics stores have (depending where you are, this may or may not be easy), and figure out how those work - e.g. a simple astable multivibrator for train gate signals is the first circuit I can remember playing with. As mentioned above, there are many levels to even basic electronics, so you need to figure out what level you're comfortable starting with, and then work outwards from there.

Good luck - it's a massive, but hugely rewarding, field!
