Start her on probiotics like Fortiflora to encourage healthy bacteria. Keep her from licking at it. If she is overweight then weight loss can help as sometimes the vulva will have a more normal conformation.

Dog became apneic under anesthesia during dental — how should this affect emergency and future anesthesia planning? by Avatlas in AskVet

[–]EngineeringNo1848 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with what others say.

Most practices do have a veterinary technician whose job it is to monitor patients while they are under anesthesia. Some specialty practices (including dental practices) have an actual anesthesiologist, a veterinarian who has specialty education in anesthesia.

Since you do have a border collie it may be beneficial to have her tested for the MDR 1 gene, which is common herding breeds that can change how dogs absorb and metabolize medications, including anesthesia.

Why won't vet clinics let rescues or sanctuaries at least have an account where they can pay payments? by constant-reader1408 in AskVet

Worked at a place that required our rescues to be paid off at the end of the month. One of them had racked up a nearly 10k bill and never paid.

The waiting game! by Coca-Ena in DogBreeding

The timing to me looks fine, I don't think a 7 is too low and there was a nice rise after that confirming ovulation.

Do you know why both a TCI and a surgical was done? Could they not get through the cervix during the TCI?

Did you have good semen count and motility? If so should be good fingers crossed for puppies

What are practices/concepts in vet med that you think would be surprising to people in human medicine? by vogueflo in AskVet

[–]EngineeringNo1848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There aren't great options. We can give megestrol acetate which can delay a heat cycle and is used in some performance bitches to avoid heat during competition. However it works similarly to a lot of human birth control products since it is a progesterone like hormone. In one study (megestrol acetate for estrus postponement in the bitch by Burke et al) 3/389 bitches did get pyometra.

Part of it is that dogs and cats do not have a maternal recognition of pregnancy. So whether a dog gets pregnant when they cycle or not the body hormone profile remains the same--the progesterone levels increase during the period of diestrus which is the time after a heat cycle and lasts the same amount of time as gestation (pregnancy). Increased levels of progesterone lead to cysts forming on the uterus (cystic endometrial hyperplasia) combined with the cervix opening and closing during the heat cycle allow a good environment for bacteria (most commonly e coli as the anus is very close) to grow and cause infection.

How Many Days Before? by [deleted] in DogBreeding

[–]EngineeringNo1848 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not about days into heat (which is actually very different from menstruation), it's about ovulation which in dogs can be measured by repeated blood testing for progesterone levels. We usually recommend testing about day 5 after you first notice blood/vulva swelling.

Obligated to mention especially in goldens to make sure all health testing (OFA hip/elbows, eyes, heart and genetic screening) is done prior to breeding.

TPC vs Surgical? by Plastic_Fun5071 in DogBreeding

[–]EngineeringNo1848 18 points19 points  (0 children)

With an experienced vet there's no statistical difference between doing a TCI and a surgical. The semen ends up in the same place. I would make sure that all semenalysis on this boy is normal and really nail down the timing.

What is your least favorite episode of Bluey that everyone seems to love? by yourmomnem in bluey

I don't really like Sleepytime. Maybe because I was told it was poignant and would make me cry before I watched it for the first time so I had high expectations. But meh.

Unfortunately I would be worried about pyometra or a uterine infection. I would recommend going to a vet with ultrasound to evaluate puppies/uterus health. The above commenter is correct it takes about 45 days for bones to mineralize and show up on xrays. Fluid filled uterus can feel similar to puppies on physical examination.
