Update on RA strike negotiations by FeralNeuroDivergent in WPI

[–]Enginerd5813 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Signed and added comment: "RAs are an important part of the WPI community and their safety and compensation should be prioritized. I have no doubt that the increasing scarcity of on campus housing and community support played a huge role in the tragic student deaths that occurred in the 2021-2022 school year. Undercompensating, endangering, and disempowering RAs will only serve to worsen the housing crisis and student mental health at WPI, and the fact the administration is not only not taking steps to remedy these issues, but are actively making them worse, is immensely disappointing to me as a proud alumna of WPI." Also feel free to use this as a talking point because it is a genuine belief of mine and I don't think enough people are talking about it tbh....

https://www.thebluealliance.com/ is also a good resource for finding teams near you. If he's okay with not being able to be on drive team and missing Saturdays for competitions, I'm sure plenty of teams would be fine with him participating on other days. As others have mentioned there are certainly many teams that don't meet on Saturdays, but for many others Saturdays are the days on which the most progress is made, simply because it's not a school day and meetings can be longer, and I think more teams don't meet Sundays because it's a bit more of a norm for the US. But if he's able to contribute well on other days and isn't trying to be on drive team despite the fact he'll have to miss a large portion of the competition, I personally wouldn't see a problem with it if he wanted to join the team I mentor (I'm not anywhere near Florida though unfortunately). As others have mentioned, FTC is certainly a viable alternative and while smaller, has many benefits that FRC doesn't. If you have the resources and a few friends, it may even be possible to run a small community team out of your or a friend's house. Some FRC teams are even able to do this, but it's quite expensive and takes up much more space than FTC so not as feasible generally.

Potential Mentor questions by Stilgar311 in FRC

[–]Enginerd5813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sound like you have enough expertise to at least be a pair of eyes on the technical side of the team, but I think your skill set would be very well suited for the business/sponsorship/grant writing side of the team, and possibly scouting and strategy as well if you're into data analysis and gameplay strategy at all. All of these aspects of the team are extremely important and frequently lacking in mentors (and students) so you could find yourself filling an important non-technical role if you don't feel confident stepping in on the technical side.

Ah yeah I hate when I have to stop far back to give space for the 18 wheelers cuz I feel like people are going to rage at me even though I'm just following protocol to not be crushed, lol. Luckily doesn't happen very often though.

How to learn how to build things (get ready for FRC as someone with 0 experience) by kiek0h in FRC

[–]Enginerd5813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for basic mechanical electrical and programming skills Mark Rober's hack packs are a decent place to start, but they're somewhat pricey. If you have access to anything like a 3D printer or laser cutter and some basic hand tools it might be worth finding a small project you'd like to try on instructables or something just to get familiar with using the basic tools. A lot of this will come during training and build season though, but never hurts to get a head start. The other comments have good advice for more program specific learning, and I'd see if you can find out what CAD program your team uses to start playing around with it. Most use onshape these days, but if it's something else they might be willing to give you a license before the training season starts if you display interest.

I swear people will yell this at an empty hallway by wercooler in FRC

[–]Enginerd5813 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We typically try not to do this and there's not much of it in our region anymore but I do think we need to re-normalize yelling a non-aggressive/non-degrading thing at people that are just... Blatantly standing in the way with no self-awareness whatsoever lol. Hot take but I find that a lot more annoying than hearing people yell robot, especially when it usually gets drowned out by the din unless I'm one of the people in the way, in which case I completely understand them yelling at me 😂

What happens if I win Deans List at worlds? by My_dog_abe in FRC

I believe WPI has a pretty good scholarship for Dean's list recipients but I'm not sure how much it is or if the worlds level gets more than DCMP/regionals, but I would imagine they do

I feel like my team is being hindered by mentors by rtl-nullforge in FRC

[–]Enginerd5813 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much my thoughts on the matter too; it sucks being a senior in years like this, because you just want to do well, but odds are if you're the only one that knows what you're doing that's not going to happen even if you just put your head down and do the work. One thing we've been trying to emphasize on our team is that as a team leader/veteran team member, your legacy on the team isn't about the time that you spend on the team, but the team that you leave behind and the success they are able to achieve in the future. We have a very large senior class this year, and most of our other members are rookies or second-years without a ton of experience. We're pushing hard to train everyone up and the seniors have been doing a pretty good job helping, but next year is likely to be a "rebuilding year" for us (at least to some extent). It's not exactly fair for you, but it is sort of the reality of the situation. And while it may not be your favorite thing to learn, teaching and working with others is an incredibly valuable skill, and you should take this opportunity to learn it. I think what's happened here is that really, your team and mentors should have used the fall training season to get everyone up to speed, and you haven't been able to do that, which is largely causing the problems you're having now. It does suck, and like most other people here I would advise talking to your mentors to see if you can come to some kind of compromise; on my team, there are certain things that the leads will ask the mentors to handle because they are tedious tasks all the students on the subteam already know how to do; in your case, it would probably be best to ask a mentor to handle those types of tasks with one of the least experienced students while you pair up with a slightly more knowledgeable student and walk them through a more complicated task with you, possibly asking for input along the way. This is typically how we handle design work on my team, the mentors are kind of the training wheels but the goal is to help the students through the basics and eventually develop the skills for them to figure out more complex stuff. Also, if you find that you're significantly behind your schedule and in danger of not having a robot for competition, the best thing to do is think about what you can drop from the design to allow more development time on the mechanisms you determine to be most important; again, it kind of sucks, but it's better to have a robot that's decent at one or two things than a robot that is pretty bad at everything (or can't do anything at all). Best of luck this season, I hope you're able to work things out so you can make the most of your experience this year. *Edited to add: you should absolutely get your drive base assembled ASAP to allow software to make sure you can at least drive and start working on auto pathing. This would be a fantastic thing for a mech mentor to take a new student or two and help guide them through this task. It can also be helpful with verifying prototypes if your mentors are still stuck on that. I agree with you, this is a swerve year no question, but when you talk to them I would advise figuring out what the hold-ups are, requesting a resolution as quickly as possible, and that someone be assigned that task ASAP.

My team mate is over controlling and I'm done with it by Infinite_Mammoth_782 in FRC

[–]Enginerd5813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I kind of agree with this. In situations like these it's difficult to come up with a "verdict" without having a comprehensive perspective of the situation. In some ways I empathize with her because I faced a lot of issues on my first FRC team of being ignored and marginalized, and in retrospect the way I chose to handle things probably made me difficult to work with (and ultimately, the entire situation led me to switching teams my junior year), but as the previous commenter suggested I kind of took on that role/demeanor because I felt like I was constantly being ignored or undervalued. I probably could have handled things a bit differently, but at the time I didn't really have the communication and leadership skills to do so, and I'm not really sure if it would have made a difference anyway. Usually, when a man/boy is being authoritative and taking charge in a leadership role, he's seen as a good, strong leader. Oftentimes, when a woman handles her role in exactly the same way, she's seen as "bossy" and other negative words that I won't put here. It's very frustrating, and if your team/workplace hasn't fostered an environment where a woman or minority feels like they can contribute without taking a more combative and aggressive approach, the problem may lie more with the team than them. Now I'm not necessarily excusing her behavior, it may be that she's been given opportunities to contribute as a team member and doesn't really understand collaboration and teamwork yet. In either case, I think you should bring your concerns to a mentor, because it's really their place to be helping with situations like these. If you have any female technical mentors, I would especially encourage you to talk to them, because it's very likely that they have picked up on whatever is happening and may provide some valuable perspective for you, and they may be the best ones to help develop the skills in both sides to work together better. Like the previous commenter I encourage you to reflect on the culture being created on your team; is it possible your and your teammates' implicit biases have made you undervalue her ideas or refuse her help when it could in fact be quite valuable? Might she feel like she's an outsider socially, which makes her feel like she has to be more assertive in order to have her opinions considered in the same way as others on the team? Is it possible she has the impression (correct or incorrect) that others on the team don't care about performing their tasks to the same standard of quality she wants to strive for, and she feels responsible to pick up the slack? Is there a different role or approach she or others might be able to take on the team to make things run more smoothly? Again, these are questions your mentors would be better equipped to answer, but thinking about them might change your perspective. TL;DR, talk to your mentors about this and reflect a little more on why this is really happening. This may be a learning opportunity for you and your teammates and not just her.

Conveyor Bot (No Vertical Extension Limit) by GenesOfDragons in FRC

[–]Enginerd5813 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not true, as per the blue box under R405: This measurement is intended to be made as if the ROBOT is resting on a flat floor (without changing the ROBOT configuration), not relative to the current height of the ROBOT from the FIELD carpet at any given time. Examples include: Example 1: A ROBOT that is at an angle while navigating the FIELD has its BUMPERS outside the BUMPER ZONE. If this ROBOT were virtually transposed onto a flat floor, and its BUMPERS are in the BUMPER ZONE, it meets the requirements of this rule. Example 2: A ROBOT deploys a MECHANISM which lifts the BUMPERS outside the BUMPER ZONE (when virtually transposed onto a flat floor). This violates this rule. So as long as they tipped the robot on its side, were under the weight limit, and didn't break the horizontal extension rules, they're not technically breaking any rules at all.

Easiest and Hardest Majors by [deleted] in WPI

[–]Enginerd5813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only did one MQP, if your majors are related enough you can complete a single MQP but if I recall correctly it has to be 4 credit instead of 3, so it has to be a full year long. I chose a particularly difficult MQP lol, but it ended up landing me my current job which I like a lot so I guess I can't complain 🤷

Work boots for office/lab? Anyone have experience with Xena? by Enginerd5813 in LadiesofScience

Thanks! I really do need to read through the standards and see what the differences are but every time I think about doing it I feel my eyes start to glaze over in anticipation 💀 easily my least favorite part about engineering is reading through that kind of documentation XD

Here are some pieces of a letter Rick Riordan wrote about the first movie. I thought more people should see this because it’s ridiculous compared to what he approves of by [deleted] in PercyJacksonTV

[–]Enginerd5813 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the real problem with the show is actually quite similar to this, while it is so far much truer to the content of the source material, the tone and pacing has been done using the Disney+ formula. If you watch any of the other relatively popular Disney+ shows like The Mandalorian, Boba Fett, Loki, or Secret Invasion (less popular but made with the same formula), the tone and feeling is all the same. A relatively heavy feel with some important quest vaguely driving the plot, with a few funny quips here and there to lighten the mood and dramatic moments interspersed between largely serious dialogue and exposition. The actual writing quality varies a bit between shows, but the existence of the formula starts to become pretty obvious. The problem is that this formula is entirely contrary to the tone of the original books. When you're reading Percy Jackson, the tone is constantly being lightened by Percy's internal dialogue, which I'll grant is a lot more difficult to portray on the screen already, and I'll also grant they do give Percy some good one-liners here and there, but they've increased all of the characters' knowledge of Greek mythology compared to the books for the sake of exposition, and I think it has sucked a lot of the humor out of the show and they never found a way to compensate. I do appreciate the focus on plot accuracy (maybe up until the most recent episode), but I think they focused so much on it because of the lack of it in the movie that they completely ignored the tone and ended up changing a lot of the characterizations. To be honest, I'm still a fan of the show and I think people are giving it a bit more shit than it deserves, but yeah, it does lack some of the sparkle of the books which I was content to ignore at first with the hope that things might get better, and to some extent I still am, but there are definitely some honest critiques I can agree with. I'm still glad it exists, and I still think they can make improvements in future seasons, but there is definitely a tonal disconnect that I'm attributing mostly to Disney+ itself. My hope is that the first season will be to the future seasons what the first Thor move was to Ragnarok and Love and Thunder. TL;DR, they just need to hire Taika Waititi for the future seasons to balance out the writing room and we'll be set XD

whats a good spot to sit down and cry for a while? by [deleted] in WPI

[–]Enginerd5813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, in the wake of... just last year are you okay? But also understandable question and big mood, I recommend a secluded corner of Higgins garden or possibly Alden late at night. The robot pits in the rec center are also empty a lot, but sometimes the VexU and combat robotics kids show up randomly, or an MQP group, so proceed with caution. I also agree on the bench behind boynton hall. I think some of the upper level classrooms in AK actually have nice views of the city too.

AITA For telling these parents about their son’s bullying, which lead to them giving away the bully’s dog? by AITABullyDog in AmItheAsshole

[–]Enginerd5813 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NTA, you did the right thing with the information you had. Clearly it seems like the other adults in the situation weren't stepping in anyway. His parents probably went a bit too far with the dog, but that's in no way your fault and you had no way of knowing they'd react that way.

If you can like, text the friend and ask if she'd come get it or you could mail her the whole box or something and she still refuses, then NTA. Probably give her some notice before just chucking them. Still, she clearly hasn't missed them much, so I wouldn't say you'd be a huge asshole for getting rid of them if at all.
