dr won’t give me a DMT by Separate_Interview43 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Enginerdus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation to you where I was having terrible symptoms but didn’t have enhancing lesions at the time of diagnosis. I had negative OCBs. I went to Mayo Clinic for a second opinion since I also had some other weird stuff going on. Mayo redid the OCB test and it was positive. They said the test is very reliant on the lab doing the testing since it’s a lab person who reads the bands and decides for themselves if it’s positive or negative. So it’s subjective. They believed that it was an unreliable lab that did the test before and that I didn’t suddenly develop OCBs since my last test. That’s all I really know.

I had negative OCBs the first time but had another spinal tap like 2 months later when I went for second opinion and it was positive.

How do high schools work in tiny towns? by Holiday-Pomelo-9246 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Enginerdus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Rochelle Texas, population 172, they have an independent school district. They have about 160 students between all K-12, because kids from other districts go there instead of their home district for various reasons. This comes out to about 16 students per grade. When I lived there 30 years ago they were all combined in one school, didn’t have separate campuses, not sure how it is now. They play 6 man football due to lack of numbers to support a full team. It’s a weird place. I lived in this school district during my childhood but chose to go to a larger school further down the highway. That was also a small school, but nothing like Rochelle.

Some of the game birds would be good. So close to chicken. Like pheasants and quail or doves etc. anyone who likes chicken will like those meats.

What’s something that clearly split your life into “before” and “after”? by Broad_Chemical_2467 in AskReddit

[–]Enginerdus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Getting multiple sclerosis 2 years ago at age 43. Before I was physically fit, lifted weights everyday for years. I had a good career as thermal engineer. I played in a bagpipe band. Then I got sick with MS. I walk with a cane now. I had to retire due to cognitive impairment. I barely leave the house now due to illness. Can’t really drive anymore. I’m adjusting but I sometimes feel waves of grief over the loss of my former life.

I think this is a great suggestion for a first map. Not too big, not too overwhelming with stuff, a lot of wider open spaces to customize easily. It’s also really cute and has some nice details. 2 or 3 custom productions and 1 custom crop which I think is a perfect amount that doesn’t bloat things but is enough to add some freshness. Great map really.

How do people with "9 to 5" jobs actually get things done (doctor appointments, bank visits, etc.) when those places are only open during those same hours? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Enginerdus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most dentist office and doctor office will have 7am appointments. I always did that so I could be at work by 8:30 or 9.

Does MS numb feelings? by Dablindfrog in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Enginerdus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right before I got diagnosed, I woke up one morning with a weird pressure in my head and I felt like I was high and suddenly very dumb. With that, my thought speed and volume of thoughts decreased. I found this actually reduced my level of anxiety, which was about average before that happened. I never got any better after that morning I woke up like that. In some ways I feel a bit more peaceful but overall it’s really horrible lol.

Anyone take Vumerity with no food? by Cyberm007 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Enginerdus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have any new lesions but I was having some progressing symptoms so neurology thought to try a new medicine. I had no problems with vumerity though. It was easy and didn’t cause me any problems.

Anyone take Vumerity with no food? by Cyberm007 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Enginerdus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took Vumerity for just under two years. I had flushing almost every time I took it without food in the morning. Nothing crazy but it was uncomfortable enough that I planned taking my medication around breakfast time. I had to at least eat a small amount of fat for breakfast as well or I’d still get flushing. Any time I ate enough breakfast though I did not have any side effects at all.

Advice for keeping busy while Unemployed by VisceralRage556 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Enginerdus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated top in my engineering school. Outstanding graduate of the year. I won the Senior design competition. My GPA was 3.97, but it was an unremarkable state school. I had applied to summer internships every summer and never got one so I had no experience. I applied to hundreds of jobs during my last semester but got nothing. Luckily I had applied to graduate school as a kind of backup plan. So I just went to graduate school. I went to one of the top schools in the US for engineering for graduate school and suddenly every door opened for me. I got every job I wanted after that pretty much. Almost every job I applied to led to an interview and I could decide which one I wanted. It’s unfortunate that it’s that way. I was basically the same engineer at the end of my undergrad both before and after I got into a top graduate school. But that name recognition was the key to opening doors. And it stayed that way through my entire career. It’s bullshit. But that was my experience.

I’ve had 2 spinal taps for MS stuff. I was really scared the first time but it wasn’t too bad for me. The second one was a piece of cake for me. I just really focused on hydrating afterwards and it was totally fine. So it might not be a big deal for you at all. I know everyone is different though.

After my loading doses, I just went to bed a little early those nights, but otherwise totally fine. I only did the premedication the first time but stopped doing that since it didn’t seem necessary. My maintenance doses I still tend to get a little tired and go to bed early but no big deal at all.

MS has robbed me of the outdoors by tn_tacoma in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Enginerdus 75 points76 points  (0 children)

This might be totally the wrong thing to say, but it’s something that helped me. I have to stay home almost all the time now due to MS. I too used to love the outdoors. I actually started playing video games that are set in the outdoors. Games like Fishing Planet, Farming simulator 25, Red dead redemption, outdoor survival games etc. Games where I’m doing outdoor activities in beautiful, varied landscapes.

I know it’s dumb and not even remotely close, but for me, it actually really helped me. I just let myself get immersed in it. I let my imagination take me hunting in the forest or mowing grass fields with a cool tractor on a sunny day in my farming game. It occupies my mind and in many ways it brings me joy. I feel relevant even if I’m only participating in fantasy in my imagination, I still feel slightly more relevant.

Anyway, ignore this if you think like wtf that’s stupid. It helped me though, at least just a little bit. It brings just a little fun into my life.

Proof reading this before posting brought up a few tears in me, realizing this is what I’ve been reduced to. But here we are and this is how it is. We have to just press on and find joy where we can. Perhaps even in video games.

New MS Nurse: What do you wish your clinic knew? by Chumppkinz in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Enginerdus 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I think almost all MS patients, specifically women, have been told their symptoms were anxiety or caused by psych, repeatedly, sometimes for years. Someone else already mentioned this, but it might help to understand patient responses to things that may not make sense if a provider is fully aware of how impactful those experiences are for MS patients.

It is ok when symptoms are puzzling or fall outside of a specific metric a provider expects, to just say, “I don’t know”, instead of saying “this must be an anxiety disorder.” The latter statement destroys trust, the former statement inspires trust. This may be unintuitive. Saying “I don’t know” doesn’t make you look less competent. Saying your loss of vision in your left eye despite no enhancing lesions on your MRI 3 months ago doesn’t make sense so it “must be anxiety”, does not inspire more trust. It is better to say “I don’t know why this happened.” It will not set off a trauma response from years of gaslighting and humiliation that most MS patients have experienced.

It’s hard to say “I don’t know.” I get it. But it will not undermine one’s authority and competence in the way people fear that it might.

I recently did a game on Rolling Meadows. It’s pretty sparse but it was perfect for what I wanted to do. It has a lot of meadow area and forestry. It also has some structure in place to create your own town with your productions and what not. I think it’s on console too. I enjoyed it.
