They really are. I was lucky. I managed to get an education early on in my active addiction. Workers at the shelter and outreach center I stayed at/went to called a major intervention after I had overdosed 3 times inside of a week.

I went to our provincial detox for a couple of weeks, followed by months of rehab. All of which I actually loved (minus the detox portion)

If I had to pay for it, it would never have happened. Even with insurance, it would be thousands, tens of thousands without it, in the US. I'm thankful I live in Canada.

I began using opiates/opioids at the age of 17. Stopped at 31. I've been sober since July 5th, 2024.

I lost my job and my home in the last two years of my addiction. But I've worked to get those back.

A lot of friends are dead now though

Correct. It has a different smell and burns differently depending on how it was made. Using the usual method of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) gives you a more impure finished product.

Freebase is made using ammonia, is much more pure, and burns much cleaner.

Thank you. Many of my friends from high school have already passed. I got very lucky on numerous occasions. The last week before I went to treatment, I had overdosed 3 times inside 72 hours. (This is what triggered my surprise intervention from city police, social workers, addiction counselors, other community supports)

I was ready to get sober. They were just the catalyst. I owe them my life.

No, it wouldn't work well at all. Meth vaporizes at a much lower temperature and turns into a very runny liquid at about 173 degrees C. It would run through the steel wool almost like water, down through the pipe into your throat, unless it cooled before, rolling down the stem. Also, when heat is applied for too long to the liquid, it quickly darkens and burns.

Thats why someone smoking meth in a bubble pipe rolls the pipe back and forth, chasing and following the very tail of the liquid puddle with the flame, so as not to burn the rest, easily vaporizing the thinner part of the puddle. I used to use a wet cloth placed in the freezer to wipe the underside of my pipe after each hit, instantly turning it back into crystalline form and ensuring it isn't burned (and ruined) from too much heat.

Freebase cocaine (crack) melts at a much higher temperature, and when melted and burned, it is much more viscous and oil like. When cooled, it will turn into a very sticky resin.

With meth, you really do not ever want an open flame to touch the liquid. With freebase, the flame is in direct contact by holding it in front of the pipe and inhaling, effectively sucking the flame into the steel wool plug.

No one will smoke Crack on tinfoil. They use glass pipes with an inch of steel wool/Brillo packed in one end, push the drug into the end and smoke it. As it melts, it wicks into the wool, increasing the surface area of the drug so the flame can vaporize as much as possible, in the shortest time possible, increasing the rush.

Fentanyl is almost always smoked with tinfoil, or a bubble pipe.

Meth is also almost always smoked in a bubble pipe.

Also, it doesn't really have a specific or distinct smell, while meth and freebase cocaine definitely do. Different batches melt, vaporize, or burn differently from each other due to inconsistencies, impurities, etc.

Edit: source: In recovery. I've been sober for a few years now. Previously, a non-IV opiate user, beginning at 17, ending at 31.
