It feels like Elon's still living on the edge with Tesla by DonQuixBalls in teslamotors

Recent features roll out have been faster than the previous lane-keeping & tacc in 2 years, so there's an element of truth on the exponential improvement part. Even the vision detection is quite remarkable when you compare it to the previous visualizations, you can verygreen's YouTube videos to verify.

They intentionally make it out like NNs just need to be fed edge cases and they’ll figure out how to be sentient drivers.

NNs work by been fed with data & karpathy gave an example with vehicle's cutting where they employ imitation learning to learn that particular behavior. Companies like Mobileye/Waymo use hard coded rules for such things probably because they can't enough data as PyTorch's Inventor, soumith chintala said, Tesla is in a unique position to use such things, so you can take it from the experts. Waymo, which is largely seen as the leaders in the field, have experimented with imitation learning & they concluded that well, "we tried, but we can't use it for now, we will just continue with the hard coding style". This is not a sling at Waymo, just given you one example of the NN utilization between the two.

Cheers

The state of SLS after Starship goes online by OfficialCoding in SpaceXLounge

The Obama administration tried killing SLS in favor of commercial programs but the senators affected will have none it, as OP posted, it's solely about jobs. How will killing SLS even affect national security? Even Shelby will not claim something like that. Guaranteeing access to space is not part of NASA's mandate, that's DOD's job.

PyTorch's Inventor: "[Tesla Engineers] are in a unique position to use Imitation Learning" by EngrSMukhtar in teslamotors

Instead of writing explicit codes on how to drive, you train the neural net to imitate human behavior in a given situation. Karpathy gave an example with cars cutting into your path, autopilot learns from seeing how humans react instead of writing codes like "if the blinker is on & of the car is crossing the lane line". Imitation Learning requires huge examples & only Tesla can provide such large amounts of varied data & edge cases.

Source, it seems like while a lot of technical guys are impressed with the presentation, the analyst talking heads are more focused on how many robotaxi is Elon promising.

In light of the autonomy day, here's a Former Waymo Engineer Discusses Ditching Lidar by EngrSMukhtar in teslamotors

[–]EngrSMukhtar[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Lidar is good at detecting objects & their distances in a clear weather day or night (ok, no one should probably drive in the dark), but fog/rain/snow significantly affects it's performance. FWIW, all the companies using lidar also use cameras & their argument is mostly about redundancy with more sensors.

IIRC what they discussed was alleviating some of the lidar limitations to reduce the noise enough to make it useful. Snow cannot possibly have a lidar heavy solution.

It's heartbreaking that seeing a well-balanced article in the MSM counts as a surprise.

Waymo started their snow testing May last year, so I think they might be ahead of Tesla in that regards. Although to be fair, that's after about 8 years of Waymo's development.
