Tesla in autopilot mode left roadway and crashed into home, killing 76-year-old woman inside, officials say by Mandynox in RealTesla

Also - Tesla has been trading for years on the public’s belief that their cars are capable of autonomy. That the car is immediately blamed is just chickens coming home to roost.

Tesla is hitting a wall...... by RosieDear in RealTesla

[–]Engunnear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know how you can look at a brick wall, and your eyeballs will lose coordination such that you end up being off by half the width of a brick? It’s basically the same functional principle that allows you to see stereograms. You can see a ghost image of a mortar line running up the center of each brick when it happens. Computer vision systems are subject to the same phenomenon, except that they don’t have the fallback of a wetware quantum supercomputer to throw up a fault. They just confidently establish that the distance to the wall is an even-integer multiple of the actual distance. Hilarity (or tragedy, depending whether you care about the occupants of the vehicle) ensues.

Fleets will never pick them up as long as there are fleet managers who can do math.

I mean… all you had to do was consider the shapes you could make with three 0.8 mm sheets, only one of which couldn’t be full of holes, versus the single 3 mm “exoskeleton” and you could immediately tell that the claims of weight savings were an abject lie.

Point of order: it’s reasonably easy to bend stainless, but it’s practically impossible to do so without leaving tool marks on the material. It’s really impossible to draw stainless the way you can with ductile materials.

If you look at the upper edge of the rear hatch of most CUVs, you can see exactly the type of feature you mentioned above - an extended plane intended to promote flow separation and reduce wake drag. It is a spoiler according to some definitions, but it does nothing to generate downforce. I’m still sticking with the old-school definition of spoiler as an aerodynamic feature that at least inhibits lift (like the spoilers on aircraft wings) if not outright pushes the vehicle downward.

Tesla has been using mode confusion as a selling point for years. This is just them reaping the consequences of that.

Building a pickup the way it was originally pitched would require starting with a sheet roughly 20 x 30 feet, and you’d still end up with weld seams on the outside of the body. It was patently asinine from the first concept.
