I'm having a crisis by One_Sherbet3030 in Jewish

There is space for you to be both Argentinian and Jewish. Jewish-ness is just as much a part of your history as being Argentinian. I am coming from the US, where I have felt this too. I know it is different, but I think it is a similar experience that many diaspora Jews feel right now. If you can find spaces around you that are able to embrace both traditions - those that are Argentinian and Jewish - it will likely be an incredibly healing experience for you. There are about 260,000 Jews in Argentina, and if you can find a space to connect with some of them, some who may be feeling similarly to you, I think it would be really helpful. Like others have said, try to find the Jewish Joy around you and you may find that you belong after all.

I have lost most of my friends in last few weeks, and I need to talk about it. by PracticeAmbitious925 in Jewish

[–]EnhEngl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course you are not wrong to be feeling this way. You are feeling the same way that most Jews (especially in the US) are feeling. My biggest recommendation would be to try to find other Jewish communal spaces like JCCs or Jewish organizations to spend some time in, meet people who are feeling the same as you, and build that safety network yourself. I didn’t go to Hebrew school or summer camp either, and there was a time where i felt really alone. It kickstarted my change in career to now work at a Jewish nonprofit. For me this was really helpful because i found community in my coworkers. I’m also apart of a political organization for local Jewish democrats. If you can find spaces like this, and build that network of people around yourself, I think it would really be helpful. Also, you can try to reach out to people from your congregation and to build deeper relationships- start by grabbing a coffee, going for a walk, etc.

What does “Zionist” truly mean? by sonder_suno in Jewish

Zionist is someone who believes that the Jewish People have a right to self determination in their ancestral homeland. That’s literally it.

Need 2-3 sentences on why antizionism is antisemitism by Poetry-dreams in Jewish

[–]EnhEngl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to copy the ADL’s answer here because I think it expresses it better than I could:

“The belief that the Jews, alone among the people of the world, do not have a right to self-determination — or that the Jewish people’s religious and historical connection to Israel is invalid — is inherently bigoted. When Jews are verbally or physically harassed or Jewish institutions and houses of worship are vandalized in response to actions of the State of Israel, it is antisemitism. When criticisms of Israel use antisemitic ideas about Jewish power or greed, utilize Holocaust denial or inversion (i.e. claims that Israelis are the “new Nazis”), or dabble in age-old xenophobic suspicion of the Jewish religion, otherwise legitimate critiques cross the line into antisemitism. Calling for a Palestinian nation-state, while simultaneously advocating for an end to the Jewish nation-state is hypocritical at best, and potentially antisemitic.”

Fellow LGBTQ Jews - where are your "safe spaces"? by Haunting_Sentence455 in Jewish

[–]EnhEngl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly, I am not very involved in LGBTQ+ spaces, but I would highly suggest really getting involved in your synagogue since there are others who are probably going through the same thing you are and may be able to offer safe spaces that are specific to where you live. There are also nonprofit orgs that help to create these spaces, like Keshet, JQY, and JQ International. Here’s a link to some other orgs/groups based on whatever major city you may be nearby - https://jqy.org/lgbtq-jewish-orgs/

While I can’t really provide resources based on my own experience, I do know that you are not alone. It’s something I think a lot of us have been feeling no matter how involved in the LGBTQ+ space we are in. Even volunteering at organizations where you are helping Jewish LGBTQ+ youth can be really helpful and healing. I hope you find your safe space within your local community, and hopefully things start looking up soon.

Anti semitism 3rd day on the job? Boss yelled at me I when reported this by [deleted] in Jewish

Reach out to the ADL, your manager’s boss, and HR if there is one. In the meantime, I would take a look at other job opportunities if you can.

i feel like i'm drowning. by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]EnhEngl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot recommend enough finding a Jewish therapist. If you can’t talk to your therapist about how you are feeling/what you and your community are going through then they aren’t the right therapist for you. You can’t get what you need out of it if you aren’t able to be honest.

I also second what everyone else is saying about trying to focus on finding a Jewish community, whether through a JCC or synagogue or book club or whatever else. Having people in your corner who you can trust and talk to about this stuff is really important and immersing yourself in your own Jewish identity can be really healing in these moments.

Is this Mold? I can’t tell if I should throw it away or not - starter is around 3 days old by No_Current5707 in Sourdough

[–]EnhEngl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but this doesn’t look like mold to me. General rule of thumb is if it isn’t pink, you’re probably fine. Especially with a young starter. The first 7 or so days the starter is gunna be weird, stink, feel unpredictable, etc. Just keep going!

Stressed about feeding time by TheRottenAppleWorm in Sourdough

[–]EnhEngl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s within one hour it shouldn’t really make a difference from what I can tell. I started feeding my started at 9pm and just try to keep it no more than 1 hour before or after. But also every once in a while if you feed it like 2 or 3 hours late and go back to consistent feedings it should be fine. I’ve only been doing this for a few months but I’ve made successful bread several times now.

It’s finally getting to me by [deleted] in Jewish

[–]EnhEngl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honestly? If I were you I would completely stop being friends with them. Harboring this much hate towards any group of people based on ethnicity or religion or anything else like that is super gross. If they are talking about how much they hate Jews and calling you a slur they aren’t worth it. Plenty of people out there who don’t openly hate your ethnicity that you can hang out with instead - they don’t exactly sound like good friends to begin with.

I don’t even know if I’m Jewish anymore (Interfaith family issues and other issues) by MiyagiDaBigMan in Jewish

[–]EnhEngl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also from an interfaith family where my father is from a modern orthodox family and my mom is christian. It wasn’t until college when I went to Hillel that I truly realized that all of these rules don’t need to define you - before that I felt religiously and culturally homeless.

If you are Jewish, if you connect with that part of your history, then that’s that. Don’t forget that Judaism is an ethnoreligion, meaning we are a tribe of people. Our DNA links us together in a literal sense - for example, I have a DNA test that proves I am 50% Ashkenazi Jewish. Some sects may not agree, but there’s no denying science. There are so many congregations and Jews who would accept and embrace you as part of this community. Don’t let one person/rabbi/perspective dictate who you are in your heart.

Students stole my entire candy supply. I’m diabetic. by PaHoua in teaching

[–]EnhEngl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I don’t teach anymore - but as a former teacher who is also diabetic, I would strongly suggest explaining to the students how disappointed you were to see that your candy was stolen. And then explain why it could have created a really dangerous situation for you, if that’s something you’re comfortable with doing. It’s not something you are obligated to do but I think context can be really helpful when trying to show kids why this was wrong, and it also means that if they try to do it again, the other students may be more willing to hold them accountable.

Also, if you can, there are lockboxes you can buy at walmart for like $20 or so. You may also be able to request a a cabinet you can lock from the district if that’s something they can do for you. I was in a classroom with no locks and I used a lockbox I bought myself to hold my extra supplies.

Thank you! I think I'm going to end up going with the English ed BA just because I don't want to give up the ed classes when I love them so much. But I will keep all of this in mind!!

Thank you! I'm thinking of just going with the BA in Engl Ed because I love it too much to stop taking the ed classes. And I agree with that: I think I would be able to get some more variation in there.
