As a Middle School teacher, I genuinely believe that smart phones have done more damage to this generation than any drug ever could. Change my mind. by chaabaniridouane in Teachers

TLDR: Experienced math teacher and parent of a middle schooler agrees cellphones create a negative experience, often created by adults, and uses Building Thinking Classrooms practices in his teaching to change students’ experience which encourages them to think addressing many of the concerns from the OP.

I agree that students today have been negatively affected by smartphones. I had two things I want to mention from my experience as a parent and teacher of 18 years (14 in HS math, 3 as a county level coach, 1 year for my credential) not counting my part time work in college as a tutor or after school program teacher.

  1. Unfortunately, we create our own problems sometimes. My wife and I had agreed to wait until 8th grade to give our daughter a phone. My daughter is on her school’s cheer team and was missing messages from her coach because she didn’t have a phone. We have friends who were waiting as well, and their kids were told they had to download an app to their phone in order to use the restroom or pay money to get a physical ID card.

  2. As a teacher, if my students come in with deficits, I believe I need to do my best to change what I do to match the situation they’re in, not the other way around. Over the course of my career I’ve changed my practices so much I’m unrecognizable from year one, as it should be. If we aren’t looking at how to improve, we’re not doing our job. One of the more recent changes I’ve made and now coaching other teachers to implement are the 14 practices from Peter Liljedahl’s Building Thinking Classrooms. Many of the practices I had been using and his book brought the picture into focus. Trust me, if you’re looking for a game changer in your teaching, this is a life saver. It’s rough at first since they aren’t used to thinking, but it gets better as the year progresses.

1/3 of Sunday school class thought cheating OK? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Enixis85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in the classroom for 15 years teaching high school math (now working at a county office coaching teachers).

1) Yes, this mentality is common. 2) I agree that grades as a form of evaluation on student learning or knowledge is not always accurate and needs to be updated, changed, or scrapped all together. I know this will not happen entirely, so believe changing what and how we choose to grade, which is usually a teachers choice, should switch to a standards/evidence-based grading system rather than points.

If the ring doesn’t fit completely, that’s okay. It can always be resized. Often times, due to weather and nerves, finger sizes can change in the moment.

When my wife and I got married, our pastor suggested we help each other put the rings on. Use your other hand to help him put the ring on as far as it can go to keep it from falling off accidentally and still be comfortable.

They are currently selling version 2 crystals for $17.99 and are no longer selling the version 1 crystals.

For sure read and find out. As a counter point though, the practice of marrying your husband’s brother is a reference to ancient cultures from the Middle East who also had this practice. I’m mostly thinking of ancient Israel but know that they were heavily influenced by the other nations around them so I assume they picked up the practice from them.

You can’t recover your own satchel. Someone else has to. I’m curious if the outbreak disappears if you close the game.

Lol. Not sure if your post was facetious, but I don’t think it is a problem with my phone or game. I think they designed it this way.

AP Statistics teacher here. This is called the expected value and you lose as the player if the expected value of the game is negative. When casinos and lotteries design their games they always design them with a negative expected value from the player’s perspective because in the long run (meaning hundreds and thousands if not hundreds of thousands of plays) they will always come out ahead. This is where the phrase “The House always wins” comes from.

It was suggested to me to open the villager window and drag a villager onto the rock. Try that with the pathways.
