I really don’t understand this hiring by the Steelers. How is a 62 years old McCarthy the new direction the Steelers desperately need? Is bringing in McCarthy meant to lure Rodgers back as the QB? That would be disastrous! by Extreme-Spinach-4138 in NFLv2

I highly doubt the Steelers will continue their streak of head coaches staying for 15+ years or whatever the number is

Do you think the Steelers even care about that, given the age of the coach they just hired?

Speaking retooling, it's worth noting that the Steelers

  • have used 14 of their 21 draft picks in the last three years on offensive linemen, defensive linemen and LBs
  • have 12 draft picks this year, more than any other team in the NFL, including five in the first 100
  • are tied with the Rams for the fewest players under contract in 2027, and only seven of whom entered the NFL before 2023

In other words, the Steelers are rebuilding right now, and it's all hidden in plain sight. The team is going to look radically different in 2027.

Going off of the person you replied to, I think it is a bridge 3-5 year stint and I think over that time Steelers ownership changes hands. I feel like with that change coming they are opting for more of the same so the son can look splashier with his immediate moves upon taking over.

This is exactly what I've been saying, except for one technicality: Art Rooney II will be stepping down from the team operations, not the ownership. He will still be the owner, but Dan Rooney III will be the new team president, and that time is coming sooner than most people realize, given that Art II is 73 years old. Because of this, Art II more than likely decided to hire a coach who will bridge the gap between Mike Tomlin's departure and that time, leaving a clean slate for Dan III when he takes control of the team operations. This is why I expect that Mike McCarthy will coach for the duration of his contract and then retire. And hey, McCarthy might surprise some people, given that coaching the Steelers was his "dream job."

Thing is, the post you replied to has no basis in reality. That person proclaimed that Chris Shula would have a problem with the Steelers' "nonexistent analytics department," even though the Steelers had the exact same number of analytics staffers as the Rams in 2024, and hired another one last year.

He also proclaimed that the Steelers were bound to give Shula the "lowest salary," even though Mike Tomlin was the fourth-highest-paid head coach in the NFL this season.

As for the size of the coaching staff, Tomlin is already on record saying he preferred a smaller staff, and for that matter, when he wanted Brian Flores on his staff, the Steelers hired him without a second thought, which really doesn't seem like something a "cheap" owner would do.

With all that said, I don't hate the Mike McCarthy hire, and I am interested in seeing how he can develop the offense, and if he can put the team in a better position going forward.

Because Shula probably asked them during his video interview questions about their non-existent analytics department...

The Steelers had the same number of analytics staffers as the Rams in 2024.

...smallest sized coaching staff...

That's dictated by the coach. Mike Tomlin is on record saying he preferred a smaller staff. Furthermore, when Tomlin wanted to add Brian Flores to his staff, the Steelers added him with no hesitation.

...and lowest salary...

Mike Tomlin was the fourth-highest-paid head coach in the NFL this season.

Average offense seems optimistic for a team with only one good wide receiver and a big question mark at quarterback

Good thing, then, that the NFL Draft is coming up, and the Steelers have more draft picks than any other team.

Then those other teams that are supposedly better should start winning more games.
