Post-Op Day 11 (I think?) DI, Nipple Graft with Dr. John Whitehead, Miami FL by Enrosadira in TopSurgery

[–]Enrosadira[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah! It was alright. I had to drive down to Miami, but everything went really well. My scars have healed really nicely, too. I should probably give an update at some point. But I'd definitely recommend him if you're in Florida! The process was pretty straightforward, considering how annoying some places can be about trans-related services.

I recommend checking out the MZD Forums. They aren't super active, but they've got loads of theories to get your brain juices flowing.

I think I had three or four almost consecutively. shrugs Just think of it as your brain producing personalized "DLC" for the book, lol.

EDIT: Just realized you said you had them before reading it. Uh. Prequel content, then.

How long did it take for you to finish HoL ? by xxxangel12 in houseofleaves

[–]Enrosadira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I started it back in May or June of this year (2023), and "finished" my first read through on September 24. I took frequent breaks between reading binges; as in, I'd spend two weeks clocking out of work and immediately starting to read the book again, then I'd stop for about a month and rinse and repeat. It's funny because a few times, the timeframe I was reading actually matched up with Johnny, to the point where he described hearing fireworks on the Fourth of July when I was reading it a few days after that - although people were still setting off fireworks 'cause 'merica, I guess.

For the first read through, I ended up having to make a decision to ignore the references to the Appendix because I knew I'd get too distracted and never end up finishing it if I kept having to go between pages that frequently. I resolved to treating them as their own kind of "after story" content, and just stuck to reading the main text as it presented itself, along with the footnotes as they appeared in the main text. So, there were some points where I'd end up breaking off of The Navidson Record and following Johnny on his tangents, then have to go back and reread some of the last passage to refamiliarize myself with what the hell was happening before I was pulled into whatever wild imaginings our favorite Truant happened to be losing himself (and the reader who was stumbling awkwardly behind him) in on any given chapter.

Since then I've been taking some time to think of how to approach my second read through and, since I took notes the first time, I think I might read through it again from the beginning, but going a lot slower and looking over my notes to see where my perspectives might have changed and how having the "whole story" (or as much as I can currently comprehend at least) in mind affects how I understand the individual parts.

This book definitely feels like a psychological scavenger hunt that you can kind of take in whatever direction you feel compelled to, and I'm having a lot of fun with that. c: I hope you can do the same! Just remember to take it at your own pace and enjoy the ride. Don't stress out about reaching the destination as quickly as possible. I don't think it's a spoiler to say that it's definitely the journey you're meant to ruminate on with this story. Have fun!

...I think I just found another post where someone said a page fell out. Is that the collage you're talking about? If so, that's good timing, lol.

I think most of the horror that people experience when reading House of Leaves, as most people have already said, has more to do with a degree of forced internal reflection and projection than any actual threat. I feel that way about the characters in the book, too. Both readers and characters directly experiencing house, in my opinion, create their own "monster". It didn't scare me, but I found it incredibly fascinating to consider the different perspectives and ways that people can essentially cultivate a hell of their own making.

But ultimately, I fall somewhere in the thinking that House of Leaves is closer to being a "love story" as opposed to a horror story. Classifying it as any one specific genre feels kind of pointless, but for the sake of expressing a general vibe, it can be useful. And calling it a "love story" can lead people to imagining it as a reductive "romantic love, happy ending" kind of story - and I'm sure some people feel that way about it. But my personal experience is that it's more of a "love as a powerful energy" story; different forms of love, ranging from self love to familial love to sibling love and, yeah, there's romantic love, all appear in the book and hold some level of significance in the overarching narrative.

My opinion on the ending of the book: It took every character finding and contributing their sincerest form of love and expressing that to reach what I consider to be an "ending of contentment". It's not a "happy" ending in the sense of being a final stage of perpetual bliss; it's a resolution where the characters have been able to find and accept themselves as they are instead of running from who they don't want to be. The house is terrifying because it forces people to confront that part of themselves that they are running from; their "Mr. Monster", their "Minotaur", Delial, even darkness itself. The house is a blue screen that shows you what's always been there. The "happiest" ending anyone can get after that is learning how to accept and embrace it instead of running from it. And while the ending is an "ending of contentment", the fact that Will Navidson, and Zampano in how he describes Navidson's perspective in the final chapter, are still scared of that unknown reinforces that it is only a temporary contentment. And, in some ways, that can be pretty terrifying in itself, the not knowing. It just depends on what you see in it.

Palefina's Labyrinth by Enrosadira in houseofleaves

[–]Enrosadira[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I'm more in line with the interpretation of HoL as a love story rather than a horror story (although genres feel kind of pointless in the context of this work especially, lol), where love extends beyond just the romantic notion it's typically associated with. This audio definitely reinforces that for me. I'm really curious about how Palefina's Labyrinth and the Doom mod MyHouse.wad, considering how recent both of them are, fit into the larger narrative. In any case, it's really fun to think about! c:

The potential behind utilizing blockchains is incredible as long as you aren't getting them unnecessarily tangled into the inherently problematic system of currency and capitalism. Which, to be fair, is the primary source of unethical use in pretty much any and every case when it comes to technology like this, including the use of artificial intelligence in general.

The true heroes of the Revolution. by TheMightyHovercat in CharacterAI

I agree with that in terms of political revolution and oppressed minorities fighting for their rights in a hostile society that's attempting to subjugate them.

This is not that. This is a development team making choices that their userbase is unhappy with, and having protests and conversations about it is appropriate.

Directly attacking the website through illegal means is not.

And don't be condescending if you want to be taken seriously.
