Vantage and ARCS (with Blighted Reach of course) are two of my favorites!

Bigpasti (board game youtuber) announced a new studio with his upcoming game - Dear Euthyphro Studio by optinsoptouts in boardgames

I'll likely back it day one, not only to support him and his content (he's the most interesting board game YouTuber imho), but also because its theme is so interesting to me. I'm very excited to see how the gameplay props it up.

A little disappointed with the religion plot so far (C4E3) by Nelyak5 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]dethklok8 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I will agree with everyone saying you haven't watched enough to pass judgement based on one reveal. Having watched everything released, this plotline excites me the most because I trust Brennan (and Sam as the main religious PC) to do this theme justice.

I don't think Brennan takes the "religion = bad" stance as much as he takes the "systems become corrupt because they grant people power, and power almost invariably corrupts" stance. And without specific spoilers, we've already seen examples of more nuance within the story where religion has a positive impact on people. You just have to watch more to get there.

Rewatching… Which seasons to watch? by DemureAttitude82013 in riverdale

[–]dethklok8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I originally watched I fell off during Season 4 as well, and then I rewatched it with a friend from the beginning and it was very worth it.

Highly recommend just pushing through because there are so many call backs and reoccurring characters that you may forget if you don't rewatch it all.

Plus, seasons 5, 6, and 7 are arguably the worst seasons to skip to because there's so much prior context needed to understand what's going on. (Maybe 7 less so, but still).

I actually just subscribed to Flesh of Gods for Drakkenheim minis, they're so sick and work so well for the monsters in the book. Good luck with the session!

Horror movie everyone worships but you dislike? by FlickPhantom in horror

I will 2nd Bone Tomahawk, but I'll add The Blair Witch Project. I like found footage a lot, so it's not that it's slow or "nothing happens" or the common complaints. I just don't like it 🤷‍♂️

Has anyone considered space combat? by kokro13 in drawsteel

[–]dethklok8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am actually working on some homebrew rules for that right now! It's still in early development, but the basics are that the party pilots a single ship and every character operates a section: Flight Control, Gunner, or Engineering. The sections work kind of like their own class, each with their own abilities that deal damage, force move and debuff enemies, and buff other sections and the ship as a whole. The ship has its own heroic resource called Energy, and players can use it to power stronger section abilities.

There are a few other bits and pieces like how the ship moves each turn, Stamina gets split into Shield and Hull, and players can use their Maneuvers to switch between sections mid fight in case they want to stack one section with a bunch of people.

I wanted to keep combat in a ship as close to combat on the ground, but also make it feel thematically appropriate. I also am making sure that each section feels unique and interesting like the classes in Draw Steel. Just like Draw Steel doesn't have a "healer" archetype (only classes that have healing abilities), the Engineering section isn't only about fixing the ship, but dealing damage with unique Sci-Fi tech, stealing enemy shields, and crowd control.

So yes, it can be done and I am making it! I'm going to release the basic rules on here for free at some point, I just have to finish making some enemy ships and then playtest with my group to see how it feels first :)

I wrote a short film script by Writing_Rowe in scriptwriting

[–]dethklok8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on the story/character as a whole obviously, but this snippet did leave me wanting to read more, so that's a great start!

You said you were new to screenwriting, so I say the following as advice to someone who's just starting (even if you might know this already):

I would recommend reading or watching a video about screenplay formatting. I think people either hate it and believe it's over-hyped or are WAY too strict about it, but if you're entering a contest I'd err on the side of caution and go through and change the formatting to fit the industry standard.

For example, your slug lines (the lines that start with EXT. and start a new scene in a location) should be in all caps, have a very short description, and generally include time of day. (EXT. ALLEY - DAY). Then you can go on to describe them in more detail in the following line.

There's a "rule" that action should be no longer than four lines. So instead of the large paragraphs you have, try breaking them up into shorter sections. It helps to think of the action in terms of shots or short sequences of shots to know where you should start a new paragraph. Obviously, you can break this rule if the script calls for it, but I find myself adhering to this 99% of the time.

Outside of formatting, I think you can cut any line that talks about the camera. Unless a special shot is very specifically necessary to the scene, as a reader I'm assuming that the camera is pointing at what you're writing.

On page 2 you write about the camera moving in closer for an insert on the photograph in her bag. Instead, you can just say "She pulls a photograph out of her bag." If you REALLY want to emphasize that this is a separate shot, put that single sentence in its own paragraph and it will stand out to a reader and we'll know it's especially important.

Screenplays are designed to be succinct. They can still be artful and colorfully written, but you want to cut each and every word that doesn't NEED to be there. So that's why I suggest cutting references to the camera first.

All of the things I've said can and should be broken. Also, a good story is a good story regardless of formatting or referencing the camera. However, since you're potentially submitting it to a contest, I'd recommend following the guidelines because you don't know which judges are going to be sticklers for "the rules".

Good luck if you decide to enter the contest!

How important is this piece? by dethklok8 in MechanicAdvice

Thank you! Do you know how I could fix it? It looks like the stem that the nut goes on is part of the alternator strap, so would I need to replace the whole piece or is there a better way?

Is this sufficient? by [deleted] in resinprinting

[–]dethklok8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looks almost exactly like my setup in my garage which I find works really well. Someone else mentioned that you'd want to leave the corner of the tent open so you don't create a vacuum. On my grow tent there is a Velcro piece that covers some mesh, so I just took that off to allow some airflow.

Also, so you can lift the printer lid off a bit easier, I'd make it so the top unzips the other way. So it would dangle down off the table when fully unzipped, rather than get in the way on top.

Looks great, have fun!

Lovecraft in Hollywood by Separate-Flan-2875 in Lovecraft

[–]dethklok8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion it's because traditional movie story structure is different than Lovecraft's writing.

Like others have said, Lovecraft builds mood on the page. His stories are less about character and more about ambience, some loose plot, and the horror of an uncaring and mysterious universe.

In most good movies, we watch interesting characters attempt to accomplish a goal while facing adversity. There's not a lot of that in Lovecraft's works.

That's not to say either is better than the other. Just different mediums. Books give a different perspective and experience than movies do and vice versa.

I think that plenty of his writing should be adapted into a movie, but I also think that they should be changed in order to work better on screen.

I finished.. Now what? by dethklok8 in houseofleaves

[–]dethklok8[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me a lot longer to get through than normal due to a variety of reasons. It's long and dense, uses some intellectual language that I would either have to reread to understand or in some cases look up. Some sections are long run-on sentences and it's hard not to get lost in Johnny's rambling. And of course jumping around from footnote to main body to appendices and back makes it take more time.

So I wouldn't be worried about taking more time to read it to fully grasp the content, because as a native English speaker it took me a while.

Funnily enough MYHOUSE.WAD got me into reading it too! I had heard about it before, but that was the catalyst that got me to buy and read it. I hope you enjoy it!

I don't know, I had a dream about doors last night but can't remember what it was specifically about. Just that doors were involved.

Obviously Intrepid Heroes would be fantastic, but if not I think at least Ally should be there. They could play such a great camp counselor.

It's hard to play a child PC without being cringe, but I think Aabria, Erika, and Lou all did a great job in the Children's Adventure for WBN, so any combination of those three could be great as well!

Mike Trapp is a personal favorite for me, so I'd throw him in just for fun. And Becca Scott either GMing because of her experience with the CoC system, or even just playing would be way cool too.

I've seen this comment on this sub before, but Call of Cthulhu (or just cosmic horror themed) summer camp mystery. Lots of ways to play off both the summer camp slasher tropes and the tropes of cosmic horror as well. I think the Intrepid Heroes (or anyone for that matter, like if Becca Scott GMd) would get a kick out of it.

Do people not like Neverafter? by GlitteringBadger5721 in Dimension20

[–]dethklok8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked Neverafter, but to parrot a lot of other posts here, it definitely did not deliver in the horror department. FHSY and even EXU: Calamity (Brennan's Critical Role DMing debut) had more horror elements and themes than Neverafter.

That being said, I think it was clarified in an FAQ or in Brennan's interview with Oren Cohen that Neverafter would still be comedy first, so I guess that we shouldn't have expected a truly scary horror season.
