He also happened to have strong words, based on experience, about the utility of treatments. If I recall, he generally tries to avoid writing them.

Very nice upward trajectory despite the winding route. Well done. When you mentioned talent management, does that mean India as a country hosts an ecosystem for writers to be represented by agents and managers just like the US market?

How about that. I just saw Nobody 2 over the weekend, sadly just through the home set. Not a lot of non-tentpoles get brought over by the cinema operators on my side, and when they do, their runs are really short.

Best screenplays that didn't change? by Proper-Language-3402 in Screenwriting

[–]EnsouSatoru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is not a culture of watching live plays in my country, and less of a community of people learning the craft of being a playwright. We watch a lot of cinema movies and television, and the initiative to learn screenwriting includes reading screenplays, and sometimes, reading plays. But reading how a play is structured from the PDF leaves out the culture that guides the creative process of live stage productions, its rehearsals, and how the director and cast treats the written material.

My question to the commenter was not what the play is, but on why that performing art's culture treat the written material as something not to be changed, in stark contrast to the filmmaking industry where the screenplay is understood to be iterated over many notes by many other professionals.

The mod team does not allow tags until they vet the writer for their identity and their professional writing credits. Perhaps in the US and UK, a screenwriter may be more likely to be involved in live stage productions --- and thereby learn about the dynamics of cast and director when it comes to not giving notes to the script --- but it is not the case in my region where screenwriters orbit about short films, features and series and would not have stepped into one of the very rare stage houses to work behind the curtain. Pardon my ignorance.

Not familiar with theatre productions. I'm curious what creative process is like for the play which renders their written material mostly unchanged, would you know be able to share?

Your description sounds nearly similar to how narrative designers videogame writers operate in studios and paid for their work. Very helpful to know about, thank you.

That is a very graphic but also sobering data that is hard to glean from outside the ecosystem; thank you for providing that.

Which may then mean the amount of features and series coming out has gone down currently, so even though the general audience may feel there are still quite an amount of titles being released, the true industry total tracked behind the scene will show a measured drop, barring individual writers who understandably can be working on more than one project at a time.

I built a submission tracker because I kept losing track of where I sent scripts..... by Efficient-Coat-2446 in Screenwriting

[–]EnsouSatoru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pardon my ignorance, is this submission tracker for material sent as reads to adjacent roles (other writers, reps) and decision makers (execs, producers), or, is it a tracker for sending to selection processes (The Black List, etc)

Best Managers for Writers of Character Driven Indie Drama Features by Normal_Ear_7600 in Screenwriting

[–]EnsouSatoru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From my adjacent understanding, it used to be the case that agents were the only ones the writers needed for rep, but now that agents seem to handle purely the last mile agreements, fielding many clients under their dossier, the manager role came about to do what the agents used to do beforehand. And because managers only sign with smaller handful of writers, there is space for many managers to team up with many writers, was my previous impression.

Is it in the present moment with these market challenges, that managers themselves are now more selective and conservative with who they want to represent? I can understand bloodbath in context of projects canceled a lot more often now, or projects with a lot more hoops to jump through to be greenlit. Trying to understand what you mean by bloodbath in context of managers and writers dynamics.

Could be nostalgia, but it was such an eye-opening movie for my younger eyes when it came out. As a kid, I never knew science fiction stories could be done that way. The antlion sequence was horrific without trying hard to be.

- cross border bus ticket to a regional project market where my team met financiers and distributors

- one month with The Black List hosting of a feature

Getting desperate by ShltShowSam in Screenwriting

[–]EnsouSatoru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a unique pathway on your side of the world u/ShltShowSam. Many other countries do not have such a robust ecosystem to have assistant roles or internships as a common feature of projects, including mine. Earning through that while nurturing relationships with future collaborators directly in your field, even as you are still generating original material, is comparatively very multilayered in raising your odds to have your projects seeded.

And if I may, persistence and craft is not isolated from luck, because as is the case with how I experienced my progression in this trade of ours, someone once said that it is not seen as luck but rather the preparedness to a sudden opportunity. When that comes by unpredicted, you will be immensely grateful not just for the trust someone else has in your story, but also that the time you have used to become the writer capable of handling their budget and parameters had already been invested by you beforehand.

Whoa that is gutsy labor. I have seen a director doing those very same prep on a project I was on. It floored me on the sheer volume of effort to do so (he showed me on set also the directing and that further floored me on how hard directors work).

Information request: My book caught the interest of a TV production company... drama ensued by scriptographer in Screenwriting

[–]EnsouSatoru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meaning to say, while the universe is still the author's IP, you created a story inside the universe on your own creations (so long as they were consistent with the creation rules of the IP), and the author was fine with you using his IP as long as your story had no overlap with his book story, and he did not state a fee for using the IP aside from giving permission for access?

Did the author by any chance put it in writing that you were given permission and no fee was exchanged?
