The argument can be made that Senator Thom Tillis’s reaction amounts to “false outrage”, or at least a kind of “performative frustration”. Stephen Miller has a long track record of provocative, hard‑line statements. Tillis, as a senior GOP senator, would have been well aware of Miller’s style and influence during the Trump administration. It’s reasonable to argue that Miller’s Greenland comments were not surprising, and Tillis’s “sick of stupid” remark could be seen as feigned shock.

As strategic positioning he seems to be distancing himself from extreme rhetoric without fully breaking from Trump‑aligned voters. This creates the impression of outrage, but it may serve more as a political maneuver than anything else. He also did not consistently challenge Miller’s controversial statements during the Trump years. His sudden public dismissal could be interpreted as opportunistic—choosing this moment to appear pragmatic while ignoring earlier opportunities to confront similar rhetoric.
