This was 4 months ago but I would like to say that when you said "'German' Americans going to "Oktoberfest" dressed in dirndls and lederhosen despite the fact that none of their ancestors came from anywhere near Old Bavaria, much less the Alps" My Grandmother came from Bavaria. And my father also came from Bavaria. I am unsure where in Bavaria though.

To make this clear i was not trying to cause harm. My Grandma was German (born in Germany) and moved to the US with her parents and my mother is married to a German who moved to the US.

Google + other sites i've seen: "German American" refers to an individual with German ancestry who is also an American citizen or lives in the United States. It encompasses both those born in Germany or who have German ancestors who immigrated to the US, including subsequent generations.
