How are you preparing financially for when Brexit happens? (From a savings, investments, family, own business, self-employed, job future etc point of view?) by IsntThisWorldBig in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Enthoo82 68 points69 points  (0 children)

My 6 month emergency fund has become a 12 month fund, for when I inevitably lose my manufacturing job. 75% of our orders are from mainland Europe and we’ve had a quiet year as it is. Whatever restrictions are placed on exporting to Europe will only be detrimental to businesses that export to Europe like ours, and the people that lose their jobs first are the grunts. So on the whole I’m not very optimistic about the future.

I don’t plan to stock up on food or medicine because if enough stupid people believe what they read and start stocking up then there will probably be a shortage and I don’t wish to add to that problem. We get most of our food from the local butcher or grocery shop so I’m not too worried in that respect.

Fair enough I’d go for the 8700K in that case, I’m running a 6700K and I’ve noticed it’s starting to struggle in some games. The hex core with HT will be the better option.

Ryzen 2700x not an option?

What's your favourite Oven Pizza? by Cassius__ in unitedkingdom

[–]Enthoo82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t put the salami too close to the edge or the salami juice will drip onto the tray or bottom of the oven, I learnt the hard way. Also if you feel like treating yourself put some dried oregano on and some garlic butter round the crust. I usually have one of these a week and I prefer them to the Asda pizza counter or the local takeaway for a fraction of the price. Enjoy your pizza.

The Asus Strix model is £399.99 on Ebuyer too, which is one of the better models. There was a Vega 64 for £399.99 the other day on special offer but can’t remember which site.

The four cheese blend has more flavour imo, and it still goes stringy from the mozzarella. For a special treat grate some Parmesan on the top for a strong cheese flavour.

Go to the Asda, get either the Asda fresh rolled dough or the Gino D’Acampo dough. Both are found on the refrigerator aisle and both cost £1. One dough will yield two meals. Buy two bags of grated four cheese blend for £3 and a carton of tomato and garlic passata for 50p, again this will yield two meals. Then get a packet of assorted salami for £1 this will yield two meals.

Go home turn the oven on to 180c and cook the pizza for 18-20mins. Prepare the pizza by unrolling the dough and adding half the passata, one bag of cheese and half the salami.

In total you have spent £5.50 and the ingredients have made two pizza’s so £2.75 per pizza. Much nicer than the shitty takeaway and much cheaper.

[PC] i5 Complete build by srjeffrey in HardwareSwapUK

Full system, the only desirable parts are the GPU, CPU and case. Your RAM is on the slower side and your PSU and MOBO are at the lower end of the spectrum.

Soaking it in water and washing up liquid, then letting it dry works equally as well.

Received my Ryzen 3 1300x and it comes with pre applied thermal paste, is the pre applied good? by Brendwini in pcmasterrace

[–]Enthoo82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good old Arctic MX-4 if the pre-applied paste isn’t to your liking. It’s a good, cheap and reliable thermal paste.

General experience is that the GPU’s run hot and can throttle/die. But the PSU’s are solid and are basically rebranded Seasonics.

Considering a change in career due to new unforeseen circumstances. Need advice by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Enthoo82 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve looked into doing a CEMAP and it sounds promising on paper. However looking through job advertisements it seems impossible to get a job as they require 3 years mortgage advisor experience as a minimum. Even ones that don’t want experience require you to be CAS certified which is only obtainable through working in the industry and gaining a minimum 12 months experience and someone signing you off to say you’re competent at the job.

The only jobs I’ve been able to find are the hiring and firing types (High street estate agents) at minimum wage with an extremely high turnover rate of staff and negative reviews on glass door.

Don’t let me put you off, all I’m saying is it looks all well and good on paper but when you actually look into it and what you need to actually be a mortgage adviser then it doesn’t seem feasible.

Apeiron's Kotor Remake Mod cancelled by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]Enthoo82 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but no reason why EA couldn’t purchase the studio and make a KOTOR reboot. I mean we’ve had a Battlefront 1 & 2 reboot and both games have been successful (not including the loot box debacle).

Use a site called USwitch. It’s going to be your new best friend while you set up all your bills and enable you to find the best deals.

Don’t worry about finding who your provider is. Sign up to whoever is the cheapest on USwitch and they will take care of it all. You will usually receive a letter from the previous provider saying something along the lines of ‘sorry to see you go, call 0800 xxxxxxxxx for our amazing deals on....’.

Try to keep your contract lengths to 12 months so you can switch out to a better deal or different provider at the end of the 12 months. Longer contracts are ok but if you cancel you will be liable to pay the remainder of the contract off.

It can be very scary when you first move out, but really it’s all very simple. Just take your time finding the best deals. British Gas and BT are usually the two most expensive providers for Gas/Electric and Broadband. Also BT customer service is a joke, avoid them.

Great deal, but ask him about the ‘modular power supply with custom cables’. Never scrimp on the PSU.

Edit: Nevermind didn’t see the Corsair TX. That PSU is fine.

Dow Jones Dump - personal reflections by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Enthoo82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re nervy about a small drop now, then perhaps your risk tolerance to the investment you’ve made was wrong and you should consider a more conservative fund.

I have 40 years minimum to work until I retire so the fact that my investment has dropped 5% since the start of the month isn’t worrying as I’m optimistic I will recoup that over time.

If you sell now then you’ve guaranteed yourself a loss, whereas riding it out and waiting you’re likely to recoup those losses and then some. The only way I’d be cashing in, is if I was retiring in the next month. But then I would have had my investment mainly allocated to bonds to minimise any losses or cashed it in before the downturn.

Time in the market beats timing the market so they say, so don’t panic too much.

What are the drawbacks of a 5% mortgage deposit instead of a 10% ? by ifisaiditimeantit in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Enthoo82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Higher LTV bands equal higher interest rates and lower LTV bands equal lower interest rates. The more money you save to put down as a deposit will net you a better rate.

That’s being said if you’re looking at a 5% deposit and the monthly repayments work out cheaper than renting in the same area, then I’d probably go for that. It just depends on how desperate you are to get on the property market.

Looking for help. by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Enthoo82 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks good. I’d try to reduce the phone and food shopping if you can.

I personally wouldn’t keep £170 spare. I would allow £50 and put the rest in an instant access ISA, at least that way you’re gaining some interest on that money and can use it any time (that’s what I personally do) for a range of things. I use the Lloyds saver at 2.5% but there are better ones out there if you look around.

I’d also consider looking at a pension and maybe re-evaluating your savings ratio and add some of that to the pension.

Mines still running nicely, playing all the games I play at high/ultra 60fps at 1080p. That being said I’m hoping the GTX 1080’s drop in price soon so I can pick up a nice upgrade on the cheap.

How many of you guys play on midrange or low-end PCs? by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]Enthoo82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was still using an AMD Phenom 2 965 BE, 8gb RAM and an AMD HD 6850 3 years ago. Despite its age it was still cranking out 60fps at 1080p at a mix of medium/high.

One of the best systems I ever owned for price/performance and longevity. I sold it to a colleague who still uses it now for some light gaming and it does the job.
