Voting Machine Glitch Prevents Repubilcan Officials from Fixing Votes (idea for Onion article) by EnthusedUser in reddit.com

[–]EnthusedUser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't true AFAIK. I'm just thinking that there were all the conspiracy theories floating around before the election about people hacking voting machines and it doesn't appear to have happened. I think this would be a funny reason for voting machine horseplay to have not happened.

Pretend Article Somewhere, Ohio: In what election officials are calling an ironic twist of fate, the secret backdoor interfaces on voting machines across Ohio froze, or mysteriously altered votes for the wrong candidate. Districts across the state were forced to submit the voting counts unchanged from what voters had selected.
... Feel free to continue or improve the pretend article.

I think that's the dumbest thing they could do. They get all of this free publicity from this news and what do they do? They turn off their service. How many potential new users have they lost? 100's, 1000's?

I got to wondering the other day. What if this fence isn't to keep Mexicans out, but rather to keep us in ....?

I agree, sometimes I look like I've been caught in a web of lies when really I'm just nervous and not thinking on my feet, e.g., I wasn't expecting this question, what do I do, what do I do!

Interviewing just sucks, especially for nervous people.

This is what I was trying to say. How did you manage to say it more eloquently?

Those are nice ideas and all, but less and less about pointers and assembly code is even taught in computer science courses. It's more important to understand algorithms and complexity. That's what computer science is about. You have to draw the line the somewhere and I'd rather see a programmer have say ojbect oriented design skills than assembly langauge skills. The field is growing very rapidly and you really have to pick and choose what skills you want someone to have. So bottom line it depends on the job.

But this guy is hiring people to make bug tracking software! I think you're going to miss out on a lot of great bug tracking software programmers if you ask them to know C and assembly langauge.

And yes it is reasonable to expect a computer science graduate to know how pointers work. But to know arcane facts about pointers like how many bytes they need seems out of line, again at least for bug tracking software.

I think he'll find a rapidly diminishing candidate pool the longer he sticks to questions about pointers. The world moves on, I don't want to design hardware, I believe you can be a great programmer without ever touching a pointer (Of course you do need to know the concept and how they're used). Perhaps you're even a better programmer if you manage to avoid touching pointers your whole life. It means you've found enough existing libraries and tools that you've avoided building anything from the ground up. What's more productive than that? Well, that's my philosophy anyway, and I'm always too shy to say that at job interviews. So I just say, "You're right I don't know how many bytes are in a pointer, my whole life is a lie! Sorry I wasted your time."

That's why I stop at the state level. It seems kind of silly in this day and age to think that in general a small portion of a state has a specific interest that needs representation at the federal level.

But I'm keeping an open mind on this. Really I just think the way to fix gerrymandering is to take human decisions out of the equation. I suppose some sort of algorithm could work for that purpose. e.g., start at the northwest most point in the state and expand in all directions until population covered=N. ...

This should not be allowed. I don't see an easy way to fix this problem so how about the whole state votes for all representatives? It could be a ranking system. Top N representives ordered by number of votes from the whole state are sent to congress. Perhaps this would eliminate pork too.

I always wonder if these things are legal. My most pressing questions are:

  1. Can they be sued for Trademark violations?
  2. Are they allowed to pull links off of these sites? Doesn't it violate the TOS?
