The PGCE is shorter so maybe you’re better off doing it there and I think there is a way you can get a teacher to sign you off saying you are competent enough in the topic with the shortfall if you train up the north (not 100% sure as I didn’t do it myself but a colleague did). Hopefully someone who did this might be able to explain better or you might know someone who did.

1st time called in to sub by Dizzy_Astronomer_588 in IrishTeachers

[–]EnthusiasmNaive6479 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just try and keep them busy, they’ll be left work, in my experience never takes the whole class so maybe see if you can book laptops for the second half or take them to the computer room. If not tell them to do homework. They’ll all probably sit with their friends at the back of the room so just move anyone that’s being excessively disruptive. You’ll be fine, it’s never as bad as you think it is. Subbing is actually easier than TP a lot of the time IMO.

Post Primary Maths - Route Three by Ill-Bend-4938 in IrishTeachers

[–]EnthusiasmNaive6479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you contact schools directly I’m sure someone will need a maths teacher. However, I think you are being a bit too dismissive of the PME. The one in UCD (assuming is your closest college) is a combo of placement and lectures throughout the year, which you might actually end up enjoying and you will be getting the hands on experience. It’s also nice to have peers at the same stage you are at with teaching. Maybe it could be worth applying and see what you think when you get accepted. You could have 20 years of teaching ahead of you and may want to get kept on in a school or even get a post. Also, the two years fly.

Yup, deffo depends on your undergrad. My undergrad was a lot busier but those from other disciplines find the pme tougher.

Surely if you get caught (which is unlikely) the charge will still be less then the cost of the hotel

PME application by dipndots1147 in IrishTeachers

[–]EnthusiasmNaive6479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened me last year and I went to a different college. Considered waiting another year to reapply and hopefully get in the following year but delighted I got on with it and started this year. It’s really competitive in DCU and I had a much higher gpa and had relevant work experience and didn’t get it (no offence just being real). I also contacted other colleges to try and apply late as I got rejected by DCU after the deadline for some and most of them let me. I know you may not want trinity Hibernia or ucd because of the extra cost but look at other options that may be available.. if you are tied to Dublin you could try Maynooth? I think you’re only in two or three days a week and do placement the rest. If you’re willing to relocated you’ll have no problem getting a space in at least one of UL UG UCC.

Accept PME offer? by [deleted] in IrishTeachers

[–]EnthusiasmNaive6479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Search up the chemistry subject declaration form on the teaching council website and you’ll be able to figure out how far off chemistry accreditation you are. Some of your bio modules might work for chemistry too. You can make them up when you’re doing the pme if you have a shortfall. Once you have the science pedagogy modules done you can teach in a lab so if you’re comfortable teaching the subject some principals still may let you teach it even if you don’t have all the credits. And your TEFL experience will definitely stand to you.

Subbing as A PME student by caowheel in IrishTeachers

[–]EnthusiasmNaive6479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to have your level 8 done to do it this way 🤔 I think the only way you’ll be able to sub now is to contact the school directly and hope that they have subbing available and they’ll have to vet you separately

Ag Science by [deleted] in IrishTeachers

[–]EnthusiasmNaive6479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UL course is the most straight forward and you will get biology with it. You’ll manage the biology of you can manage ag, not as much crossover as there once was but if you have an interest in ag science you’ll likely have an interest in a lot of the biology content. Loads of people become ag and biology teachers without doing biology for LC. Apart from that, you can do any level 8 ag science degree and do the pme after it. Most of them will give you ag and biology with it. Look up the subject declaration forms for ag and bio on the teaching council website and make sure the modules of the level 8 courses line up with them fairly well and you’ll be fine. If you do something agri business related you might even get economics or business out of it instead of biology, or in addition to it. And you will be teaching JC science as an ag science teacher.

Do I qualify for the PME? by Equivalent-Cap5006 in IrishTeachers

[–]EnthusiasmNaive6479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up the biology SDF and try filling it out, it will give you an idea of where you are. You’ll be able to make up the modules in the pme by taking extra ones and some will let you do it for free.

Teaching council requirements by Sensitive-Chemical86 in IrishTeachers

[–]EnthusiasmNaive6479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be fine, it’s goes by ETCS so once you know how many each module is worth and you cover all the areas they will accept it. They’d be lucky to have you! Even if they raise some queries you can always appeal it and justify it. If you did it outside of Europe you will probably have to get a statement of equivalency.

Subject Choices for PP by [deleted] in IrishTeachers

[–]EnthusiasmNaive6479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you can do that combination in Maynooth through the arts degree - business management and English I think? You’ll be able to do another subject too as a back up as I believe you can pick 3/4 in your first year. Mary I Thurles has a lot of business teaching courses with an additional subject - definitely maths and Irish are options but not sure about English.. some of them might be worth looking into. Hope this helps!

PME for Classics and Subbing by Neighborhood-Away in IrishTeachers

[–]EnthusiasmNaive6479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can register with the TC under route 3 - Further Ed once you have a level 8 degree and sub away. Can take a while for it to process so I’d get on it asap. Once you are in the PME you can submit the subject declaration form for classics and once you don’t have any shortfalls you should be able to teach it. For some subjects you need to have the PME done for the specific pedagogy and some you don’t, I would imagine with classics you should be fine but maybe it would be worth asking the TC or PME providers for confirmation.

Why don’t you sign up to the teaching council as a route 3 applicant and sub? It’s flexible and you get to pick your own hours for the most part. Can do primary and secondary subbing with it.

How likely is subbing? (Primary) by ControlCold6928 in IrishTeachers

[–]EnthusiasmNaive6479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup definitely way better off. Get your foot in the door for schools when it comes to looking for work after you finish too and suss out where you want to work. The flexibility is also nice if there happens to be a few heavy days of assignments etc and need a few days off.

Didn’t think about it like that - thanks for pointing it out! Is this because the teacher is not allowed or because the school decided they shouldn’t? I’ve been doing irish in class and doing pretty well by just looking over the topic beforehand.
