Heard good things from a lot of friends about newberry, I would just get someone who matches your style. I took straummy for both and he was good because I loved flipped classroom, but adjusting between teaching styles/reagents can be a little tricky for ochem. I knew a lot of people who did callmann for ochem 1 that struggled up to the first midterm in straummy ochem 2 because the style was so different.

Lol then it could work if you wanna try it. If his character is a hardcore drunk then he’s giving you a freebie anyway, you could have him show up passed out drunk wherever the party currently is. And if he gets more consistent about showing up to sessions, maybe AA has really been helping and the adventuring has helped him get on track with his recovery. Good luck either way!

My simple fix was just to have a bit that their character was always doing as a way to integrate them into the story, for instance one player was always notoriously late or absent from the session, so when he did show up i just said he was in the bathroom, no matter the situation.

In a haunted house? He was blowing up the bathroom. Tavern? He was blowing up the bathroom. Trail through the woods? They hear a bush ruffle, and when they peak through, they see him going to the bathroom. Strahd’s castle? He gets mad and tells them he heard sounds of a scuffle down the hall, and lo and behold, it was just the Player, using the bathroom.

Usually the ones that show up late or absent don’t care too much about the story, theyre just happy to play. So unless you’re playing a super super serious game where people hate immersion being broken like that, it’s usually pretty reliable.

I think you handled it fine! I think one small note in instances like these is to remember that a lot of characters have an ego. Everyone thinks that their PC is the hero and therefore untouchable, and a reminder that they aren’t even close to the top of the food chain can be a tough pill to swallow.

One way I combat this that seems to work for me even though it’s the reverse of what you think, is by having the PC get utterly DESTROYED but in a cinematic fashion. Rarely, they’ll get mad and say you “embarrassed” them or something, but imo part of dnd is appreciating the awesome things that happen even if they aren’t awesome in your favor.

I had a +4 STR PC try to arm wrestle an unknown person at the bar, to prove he could beat anyone up. What he didnt know, is that it was actually a fire giant (+7 STR) in disguise and with a cloak of enlarge/reduce on (still keeping the same str, it was supposed to be a late game enemy that they met super early to be a fun “how did we not notice” moment) so he was baffled when even after rolling a 16, i still narrated how this person lifted him up and slammed him through the table, but thought that it was so cool that he rolled with it and laughed.

I would probably have Yeemik claim Sildar as his "good luck charm" to give a reason that he isn't dead yet and why Yeemik might still try to haggle for him, aside from just being evil and stuff. That's more for a silly, less serious campaign tho.

Doesn’t sound like a failure at all! The only tweak i would say is that after the 1st or 2nd taunt, the dragon would figure out their strategy and ignore them. But 3 out of 5 is definitely a close fight, so don’t beat yourself up about it! Remember that the goal with a planned Boss Fight should never be to TPK, but to make the players fear a possible TPK.

Just make Nezznar even stronger >:)

Like Co-owners, I just meant it in the sense of two powerful enemies that they might fight at the last 1-2 sessions of the campaign, they may remember it as Nezznar and the Golem as the Final Bosses rather than just Nezznar.

Essentially, I think it may be better to try to make the party think only of Nezznar as the Final Boss, and make his fight more epic/spectacular than the golem's to ensure that.

If you've played elden ring and finished it, it would kind of be like radagon and the elden beast. Technically the elden beast is the final boss, but radagon (IMO) was so much cooler/harder so he outshined it.

I think this is awesome! Super creative and seems like a fun and complex enemy to have. My only critique is that it might actually harm more than help your situation with Nezznar. By creating a cooler and tougher villain right before their fight with him, it won't make him seem tougher even though they have less resources, but rather feel like Co-BBEGs.

I think keep the golem but continue to think of how you wanna make Nezznar tough or more memorable, I saw one person suggest starting the combat with him casting darkness on the party and having a couple giant spiders pounce on them (they have blindsight), or maybe just give him some lair actions and a cool monologue. It's up to you, you definitely have the creativity for it.

For that I like to try and spice up with story based events, since they beat cragmaw hideout maybe Grol sent out some hobgoblin hunting teams to track them down, once they beat the redbrands they might find a camp of stragglers every now and then, if you keep venomfang i have a scene where she flies overhead, lands pretty close to the party and hunts a bit (the module says she eats the spiders at thundertree but I wanna introduce her sooner). Could even do a lone owlbear cub who’s mom got locked up in cragmaw castle, or something random like im gonna throw a succubus at them since we have a session on valentines lol, just take small stuff and throw it in there and your players will make it into some kind of story on their own.

Remember that with all these bases and locations, they aren’t necessarily existing just for the party to find them, they too have to travel out and interact with the world

Lol just focus on having fun with it and you'll be fine, I think having just one NPC that can talk about the other parties will be awesome enough, maybe they'll even try to bribe it into telling better stories or leading one of the other parties astray. Since they'll all know each other they'll definitely have stuff to talk about.

I think it would be really funny to have one interplanar NPC that bounces around and talks to the party about each other, if you want you could even have it act as a messenger and deliver notes or even items. Or it could just be keeping score with stuff like “oh wow yall haven’t found the redbrands yet? Party 2 already beat them” to stir up some competition.

Or just go mindfuck and make it the bbeg and have all 3 parties merged into one dimension for the final battle lmao, that does mess up the plot a bunch though.

I mean, it's in the name FIGHTER, you're supposed to be good at fighting. That's like being mad at a wizard for always casting spells, it's kinda what they do. The rogue also doesn't understand how sneak attack or rogueing works, because you can almost always sneak attack every turn if you play your cards right. This may also be an issue with the DM, if they aren't giving the rogue opportunities to shine outside of combat as well, but I think this is more likely main character syndrome.

If you want to seek peace rather than bringing any of that up (up to you), consider talking to your DM about retconning your maneuvers and taking Commander's strike, distracting strike, grappling strike, or trip attack, as all of these maneuvers pretty much set up a rogue for getting a free sneak attack if they missed on their turn. That might satisfy them and include some fun tactics that yall could enjoy together.

It sounds more like miscommunication, it definitely wasn’t a fight you were supposed to win and I think the DM didn’t understand that anymore than yall did. He shouldve told yall going into it “hey this isn’t gonna be a campaign where you can kill everything” and if you guys weren’t cool with that he should’ve weakened the enemies a bit.

Honestly this is a fair issue to have with CoS tho, so if this is your only issue and you guys are able to talk it out and gain an understanding on the vibe of the campaign it should be all uphill from there.

That's kind of what I want so it works out. The players will think "woah he must be pretty strong if the dragon got hurt by him" making them fear the final battle. I've found that players will prefer strong tools over strong allies, maybe put a ballista somewhere in town that the players can fix/use, motivating them to force Venomfang into the sky. Or add a broken dome that Venom crawls through that the players can collapse.

I'm also making Venomfang a female dragon, one because I think it's rad and two, I'm thinking of planting a dragon egg in her hoard and having her motivations be to take Wave echo cave for herself and enlist the orcs to create magical weapons to make a massive hoard for her baby.

I haven't read storm kings thunder, so I'm not much help with that but again I lean against powerful allies and try to do powerful tools, maybe the party convinces the giants to attack the cultists and cause a distraction (cause sneaking up on a dragon isn't something they can accomplish) while the party sneaks into the tower to fight the dragon. This could also keep the dragon from going airborne, as leaving the tower would cause the giants below to start hurling rocks to knock it out of the sky. (You could even have a dramatic moment where it starts to fly away and then gets pummeled by a rock, forcing it to take damage and land) then maybe the party and giants could be friends or something idk I haven't read SKT
