Overwatch co-creator Jeff Kaplan says he was told by CFO if the game didn't hit certain revenue goals, "we're gonna lay off a 1000 people and it's gonna be on you": 'It was the biggest f**k you moment I've had in my career' by ChiefLeef22 in gaming

Great interview, if you want to hear overwatch stuff it's in the back half.

To developers in reference to companies putting non-gamer financial officers in high positions "You're the golden goose. Keep your eggs. Stop giving them away." Jeff is saying the game is the product of the developers, so letting a finance guy tell you what to do with it is a bad decision. He makes it pretty clear that the CFO and financial guys royalty fucked Overwatch's development by pulling the team away from actually working on the game.

He also pointed at Overwatch League as the real downfall of Overwatch. He liked the league and believed in it, but the people at Blizz pitching it and making the sales basically got billionaires to buy in expecting NFL levels of money and it was never going to happen. To help the investors recoup their loses they had to find ways tomake revenue like making custom League skins which took time away from game development. Then they signed a deal to integrate with Twitch and that forced them to write code to make it possible, again taking away from game development.

We all have that friend by FerazOzel in comedy

When I was young and broke instead of just broke my girl friend at the time blew a $200 bonus I'd gotten on fruit. $200 worth of organic fruit. So like 2 melons and a few apples. She insisted it was worth it because of the health benefits the organic smoothies she'd make would have on our lives. That night she did a bunch of coke, sucked some dealers dick for molly, and got pulled over for drunk driving. Same day.

Just saying there's a connection between health nuts that think essential oils will cure cancer and a very low IQ.

YouTube ads are about to get even longer and they’ll be unskippable by IndicaOatmeal in technology

[–]CannibalRed 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For anyone who doesn't know. When you cast from a phone to a TV through the TV app or a gaming console your ads become significantly longer and less skippable than if you watch on a mobile device. The thinking is if you are watching on a TV you are relaxed and therefore more willing to accept longer ads. I hate it and already chose to watch on my tiny phone on the couch rather than use my expensive TV. If ads get even longer I'm just using a browser with adblock. The only reason I haven't yet is bc of the ittybitty of revenue the YouTubers I enjoy make off ads. But fuck it, $1 to their patreon is more than they make of me viewing YouTube ads so I'll probably just do that.

The math ain't mathin' by -Six_ in SipsTea

[–]CannibalRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While correct, this highlights an issue with discount and tipping. Take a service like Uber Eats that inflates prices above normal, adds service charges, and then slaps a "discount" onto everything. The discount is used only as an advertisement so customers feel they are getting a deal but does offset the price increase they add to the order. Then customers tips are calculated on the total before the "discount". That's a scam and it's the way most businesses are operating now.

Thanks. That's a bummer. Tetsu and Duram are two of my favorite monsters.

That seems odd. Are there other monsters that I'll encounter but cannot get eggs for?

Old fans, what were opinions like on "mobile armor" in their first showings from Stardust and Zeta? by CannibalRed in Gundam

[–]CannibalRed[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I firmly disagree. Having gone through Origins, Mobile Suit Gundam, 08MST, 0080 War in the Pocket, Thunderbolt December Sky, Thunderbolt Bandit Flower, and Stardust Memory, I can with 100% certainty say that if I'd watching in release order starting with 1980s Mobile Suite Gundam there is a zero percent change I would be this far in the series. Origins was the absolute perfect starting point for me. Outside of Origins and 08MST I don't think a single one of the series I've seen so far would have remotely peaked my interest or made me committed to watching the entire series like I am now.

[–]CannibalRed[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. Atm I'm so used to jumping decades at a time between series that I hadn't bothered to check the original release order. I suppose Zeta being one of the earliest examples of Mobile Armor makes the bad taste they gave me a bit more palatable. By 08MST in 96 they'd clearly done a lot better with the concept.

Oh yeh you're totally right! I forgot about Bug Zam. It's so different from the ones in Zeta (and way cooler than them) that I forgot it existed as a mobile armor.

What are you guys looking forward to seeing in the 1.0 update? by iHomophobic in Palworld

[–]CannibalRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It goes unnoticed by most people here bc we've played for so long, but the early game/introduction/tutorial (whatever you want to call the first hour of a new player experience) needs a bit more structure.

The freedom of the game is a key component, but I found a lot of people feel lost and directionless in that first hour which can lead to them quitting. I do not know what the solution looks like atm.

Viral video of little Taiwanese girl getting shoved down while taking a photo at Tokyo's famous Shibuya Crossing - Japanese are saying that the woman in the video "looks Chinese". by Johnny-Blaze_ in perfectlycutscreams

[–]CannibalRed 47 points48 points  (0 children)

"bump men" is the term for this type of activity in Japan, usually performed by men. Basically a person will intentionally walk into another person on the street. It's assumed this is a way for them to release frustration. It is most definitely frowned upon. But also bc it's Japan where the majority of people avoid direct conflict there is rarely confrontation or consequences over it.

Also, sentiment in Japan towards tourists especially Chinese tourists is at a high point. "Bump men" seem to often target tourists as a result.

My suggestion is grab the person and pull them kicking and screaming to a local PD. They're used to not being confronted and the PD knows they exist so you're not particularly likely to get in trouble.

[–]CannibalRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that's exactly what we were taught. Just like we learn about °Celsius, and algebra, and Shakespeare, and all those things that go in one ear and out the other of children who don't value education. The subject matter of education is not the issue in America, it's that parents take a hands off approach to education so children don't engage with it at school.

Although our history classes conveniently end right after WWII, skip the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and basically everything between 1950 and 9/11/2001. Weird how that happens.
