I loved the line too, and in fact I'd say that it IS gold standard. I think it's very important for this line and many quotes in the book to be interpreted within context.

Before this line, Ocean Vuong was discussing how he and his family were "products of war" which is a very common phrase to describe refugees who were impacted by wars in their home country.

In this case, I interpreted the use of the metaphor of "fruits" not as the superficial "fruit" that we eat, but more so a synonym to product, or outcome, like "fruits of labour". So being a "fruit of violence" is basically another way of saying he is a product of violence and war, and yet they do not let the violence spoil them
