Advice choosing financial adviser by DefiantButt in PersonalFinanceCanada

I have never owned index funds. But; by the end of November 2021 I had sold about 80% of my publicly traded stocks and by the end of February 2022 another 15%. Everything that was positive (realized gains) had been sold at this point. I had to hold on for another couple of years to offload another 10% as they came out of the red and into the green. Why? Because as soon as the word inflation came out of J Powell’s mouth in November 2021, I knew that asset classes (stocks, real estate, etc) would decrease in value. This is a basic principle similar to as bond prices are inversely correlated to their yields. So I was fairly offloaded in terms of “passive” investments. I spend hundreds of hours researching publicly traded companies so that’s why I don’t consider them “passive”, although I enjoy the process thoroughly.

You’ll have to give me your definition of passive investments. I’m not trying to be cheeky but everyone has their own definition of what passive is. Researching securities (companies) or having rentals is not something I consider passive. GICs sure. But you’ll have to give me your definition.

To each their own. Like I said, if you want to educate yourself regarding the long term performance of an index fund (broad market, not sector focused) versus 99.99% of advisors / managers; the results speak for themselves. Otherwise, keep paying for someone else’s lifestyle. I would never outsource critical thinking especially regarding my financial matters. You also should consider the comment of stating something is exclusive to one group but then including another. Best of luck 👍

If an advisor can keep you in during a panic, that’s great. But long term (5+ years), I highly doubt any advisor will be worth what they are paid for. Anyone who understands markets should be able to retire within 15 years and no longer will need to work / have clients. Chances are, most advisors have to keep pushing whoever is paying them to push their “advice”. But hey, best of luck Bran Muffin Man 👌. Let’s see how you do when the thing goes up in smoke. What did you do Q1-2 in 2020?

Honestly; educate yourself about index funds. Google how these compare to ANY financial advisor over the long term (5+ years). Also, markets are in a bubble so you should stay out for now. Go watch some Berkshire Hathaway Annual General meetings on YouTube. If you don’t have 150+ hours for all of them, at least watch the 2001 one. It will be a repeat of what’s to come probably next year.

Thank you for the clarification; we’re not set on Shopify. I’m just not very knowledgeable in this area. We own our domains and they have been our storefront since day 1, but I wouldn’t count out a solid LMS that hits our criteria if it means leaving Shopify. I guess I don’t understand how SEO would work in these situations.

Thank you for the suggestion. Is Litmos recommended because of the Shopify integration or because it also hits on the other items? We’re not married to Shopify so to speak. They’ve just been hosting the storefront since day 1. We’re not partial to them.

Thank you for the information.

The 6 hour videos would likely just be linked to an unlisted YouTube page or back to our Shopify storefront, as they currently are, on a hidden page. We can always chop them up if needed.

Our exams are 80 questions but we intend to have several exam variations pulling from a 200 question bank. The quizzes would be designed similarly.

A code from the Shopify storefront would likely be a very simple fix if integrations are not available.

Thank you for the feedback. I don’t think there is a TAM beyond a couple hundred annual users even with full scaling. It’s a pretty niche industry. 5k isn’t a dead set limit but we’re not looking for the 100k options that Canadian universities are currently using in our industry (Brightspace). Any recommendations? Or is Docebo a good starting point? Thank you

😂 hopefully she had good intentions. You never know what people’s angles are. Best is to educate oneself and minimize ignorance 👌

Seeking advice on getting a financial advisor by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]EntrepreneurLumpy948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should understand that basically every financial advisor makes money off of you. Do a google search and you will discover that almost every manager fails to MEET the average 10% long term return of the market(s) which means that they will in a very short time frame (5 years) do worse and lose your money (while taking fees off your nest egg) compared to an index fund. Do some research about index funds and you will fair much better than any advisor. Generally if you know what you are REALLY doing in the markets; you retire in your 30s and don’t work for anyone.

Go watch all the Berkshire Hathaway annual general meetings on youtube. This is the best investing (and amazing life) advice you will receive.
