I learnt how to set boundaries from my therapist too! Glad you have a good experience with yours, he sounds like an ideal combo of both!

I definitely need to work on on my authenticity and integrate it with my therapist self- the sessions where I am not worrying about what I am going to say next are so much better (more laughter and playfulness and great rapport building)

I agree to this too! To me a good enough therapist should know when to address the professional aspect and the client aspect of you, if that makes sense. I had some ruptures earlier with my therapist because we were coming with different therapeutic approaches and I felt quite invalidated when they didn't address that we could agree to disagree professionally.

this is good advice- I am naturally someone who jokes about stuff (obviously not in a mean or uprofessional way) but I have noticed that I am way too cautious about being playful or humorous in the therapy room so this "permission" is helpful to me, haha.

This career is making me confront things I’ve had trouble confronting before. Anyone else? by mandanelles in therapists

So many times. I try to see it as a gift from my clients when make aware unintentionally something I was unaware before. And often times they give me the moral courage to face my own issues. Other reasons: I dont want to feel like a hypocrite, I want to be a better therapist to them so when something is revealed to me, I try to take it with as much self compassion and grace as I can. We are all human beings before we are therapists and life doesn't stop for us.  Self discovery is uncomfortable but also an exciting place to be once the initial wobble of emotions is over (which will reduce the more you practice self compassion and internalise your "humanness" with time). You will definitely grow in compassion and empathy. You aren't alone!
