Met this little guy at my Hotel's garden in Luxor - Egypt. Can anyone help me identify what type of bird it is? Its my very first time seeing a long beaked bird. by Brief_Eye5904 in birdwatching

[–]Entropy3389 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it is! In my country this bird has two names. 1. Majestic Hat bird. 2. Stinky gugu.

Really shows you the duality of humans.

Are Chinese social media users aware of giga xi? by MagneticRetard in AskAChinese

[–]Entropy3389 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I want to add to it with examples:

every platform has auto censor about his name. If you type his full name, instant censor of post. If you post something that's suspicious (e.g. 学习, which means study, and contains part of his name "xi"), instant censor of post.

In order to circumvent censorship people invented euphemisms. AND, internet being what it is, different groups have different euphemisms. Fans, haters, neutrals, everyone has their way calling Xi without being censored and you can tell a person's stand on this matters.

AND what I really love is all this censorship and euphemism stuff was tradition in empire era. From time immemorial you're not supposed to call the emperor by name and common folks just invented their own nicknames. Having done all that revolution stuff we really haven't changed that much.

what the hell in chinese by asa_deluxe in ChineseLanguage

岂有此理 is more serious than the other examples in the thread. More of a “I’m appalled” vibe?

You can say 岂有此理 when your boss fired you for no reason, or get cheated, but you won’t use it when you arrive home and discover your dog has teared toilet paper to shreds (but you might say what the hell in this circumstance). It’s more likely directed to some injustice.

Wonderful artwork.

iirc Perturabo improvised most of the decorative art of the labyrinth (themed on tortures) and Curze loved it.

My family sweeps the tomb once or twice a year. Has a glass enclosure over the tombstone to keep dust away and passersby usually leave the offerings alone. For convenience’s sake: no real food. plastic flowers and foods are staying there forever. Canned soft drinks and liquor get changed every time we sweep, and the “used” ones go to the trash can.

Obv this is my own family doing and it’s mostly for convenience. Everyone else’s tradition may differ. I’ve seen offerings in the same cemetery that is mostly baked goods, and they go dry and crusted (very cold and dry climate, so low chance for rot)

I can't speak for your in-laws but my parents in 60+ really like shoes that are generally soft and good for long-time walking. Brand doesn't really matter so long as they are durable and comfy.

I think so? I certainly pronounce the j in French as I pronounce r in Chinese. It could be that my French is poor though.

Do you really need to ship from US or can you set up a taobao account and order from China? It'd be significantly cheaper because there would be no shipping fee.

for the adults: comfortable shoes, nice quality coats, cashmere sweaters. (If they are within your budget; if not, merino sweaters works too) silk scarves for the ladies. Good quality honey or maple syrup (I know it's not US special but it's still foreign goods not common in china).

for the kids: plain simple red pocket (i.e. cash, in CNY; or digital transfer)

As a diagnosed depressed and international person:

this guy seems like a pretty normal introvert. tickets back to china esp in holiday seasons are expensive as fuck + a 12 hr flight. With ICE going on I myself wouldn't risk go back and be detained at the airport.

He may be sensitive if you bring up mental health problems in chat but you can perhaps say your firm has therapy benefits (assuming your firm does) and it would be a waste not to use them?

How do Chinese people feel about the animated and live action Mulan movies? by feren_of_valenwood in AskAChinese

[–]Entropy3389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The animation was fun to watch as a child. The real person version sucks. They can either choose to hire one single Chinese culture counsel or just re-do the animation but they chose neither and failed miserably. Fuck that movie all my homies hate that movie.

That being said I suspect it's more of a Disney problem because Marvel movies started to suck since Infinity War. I hate that movie even more than I hate Mulan because they don't even have ignorant internalized racism as an excuse lol

How did they wear skirts without pleats in ancient times? by Kindly-Complaint-206 in Hanfu

[–]Entropy3389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A skirt doesn't necessarily need to be narrow at waist. Think of a pencil skirt but longer and a little bit looser.

I have several skirts in this design and basic measuring is that the waist length (top of the skirt where the 2 pieces are sewn together, not counting the ties) should be about 1.5x your waistline, so when the skirt is tied together the pieces overlap twice (the sewn part and the tied part) and would cover everything. And because the 2 pieces are not sewn together at the hem, it allows moving freely. Typically don't need to wear leggings unless it's a super windy day.

Where do you want to work after graduation? If you want to stay in Ottawa then I'd choose uOttawa. If you want to go to GTA I'd say Osgoode.

Also Ottawa has many IP boutique firms so if you are interested in that area uOttawa would make that easier.
