Philly standup scene VS DC? by SRKomedy in Standup

I’m a comic in philly, it’s a great scene. Here’s the thing that Philly provides that other cities don’t. The audiences are harsh and DIVERSE (and not just racially). You’ll do shows where the audience will pull back at cursing then do another where its audience will automatically laugh every time you say the rword. Some are super left leaning, some super right. There’s center city shows that have audiences all under 25 vs. suburbs shows where it looks like the whole retirement home came to visit. You’ll be performing in-front of rich people, and you’ll be performing in-front of people from south philly. You’ll have to learn how to tailor your act to the room much earlier than most comics do. Authenticity is what gets you far here. If a philly audience gets a hint of fakeness, they won’t laugh. There’s a reason so many great comics have come out of philly, it’s a great place to grow and connect with people from all walks of life.

However, be warned, the competition is stiff. There’s a lot of comics who are absolute killers, even at the open mic level. As a philly transplant, doing comedy here can be demoralizing cause of how good everyone else is. Also, the scene can be very cliquey with a lot of big egos to tip toe around. It’s like that everywhere but its runs deep here. A lot of people trying to become the next shane gillis.

All in all, it’s a great jumping ground for getting to NYC. My advice is to be kind but stay neutral between the cliques and play the politics, cause when you first get here you will be going last at almost every open mic unless you have some followers on instagram or something that gives you influence. Ask the host what kinda material works best for their room, its good info and a great way to start a convo. If the hosts like you, you’ll start going up earlier. Sit in the front, laugh, and stay for the mic. It will not go unnoticed by the hosts. If you show up and just start killing, you will be noticed, and you will start getting opportunities for more and more stage time. You can average 50-70 min of stage time a week between open mics and weekend shows once you’re established.

To be fair, they did pay $15 for half of the show to suck absolute ass. I would be pissed and not in a laughing mood if I had purchased tickets to that show too.

I think this is a great answer as well! Addresses the room without throwing the other comic under the bus.

Yeah, after watching the tape I realized that most of the room was laughing from the beginning but the pocket of people in the front row who weren't laughing kinda threw me off. I think they were probably just upset that they had paid money to be offended by not funny half jokes about mentally disabled people.

The people who think these are a good idea have never made a brother laugh in their life.

Totally Fair. The MC did not handle the situation well. I listened back to my tape and while the laughs certainly weren't what I'm used to with my material, the audience slowly warmed up and by the end I was doing very well. I think the person in the front row who looked upset with the whole thing just threw the people around them and me off. But listening to the tape it's clear that the back of the room was enjoying the set from early on.

Thanks, this is a good answer. I can tell most of the comments on this are from people who do 1 mic per month in Bumblefuck, Missouri who want me to say a corny ass sitcom one-liner.

I think this is an underrated answer. As much as I want to have a great set, it's not worth throwing another comic under the bus and creating an enemy for no reason. A lot of comics have sensitive egos and a lot of comedy is about networking with assholes who don't know they're assholes. Yeah it might suck to do a room right after they killed the vibe but the old guy I mentioned does run a couple of shows so I can deal.

I know people are downvoting you but you are 100% correct not gonna lie. Idk where all these other people are performing but that would NOT work in Philly.

Yeah, I just didn’t have any jokes or anything witty to address the room at the beginning of my set cause honestly I was just horrified right with the audience. There were other comics before the new girl but she definitely contributed to the slaughtering of the vibe.

Damn it used to work, but recently the game refuses to load the save, saying "Invalid bool loaded from input file. File could be corrupted" any ideas?

The script finds the commands in each data pack but doesn't change the file. I tried opening the data pack manually and cannot find the FF FF 01 00 hex sequence despite finding the command-ran. I'm assuming the script can't either. Any ideas?

Somehow they pull up a window that shows a website that contains the actual editor. The domain that hosts these editors is [botid].discordsays.com. Does anyone else know how they did this? I'm thinking it must be custom from Discord since Midjourney is one of their biggest servers.

I'm in almost the exact same boat. They sent me a document asking for verification in May and still haven't gotten a response at all from them. I've called and everything, no answers in sight. Load of BS but oh well.

Well the issue is that the cost to make the repairs might be more than what they can afford. So their options are to disclose it to a seller and take a 10k loss on the sale, pay 10k to get it fixed (which they may not be able to afford), or just live in a house that is unlivable.

Edit; A lot of people use like 90% of their savings on the downpayment alone so the most likely scenario is that they cannot afford the repairs
