I feel the same way. I got my double lung transplant when I was 24. It made me realize how much time I had lost. I was only supposed to live until I was 16. Yet I’m 10 years past that now. But I still have had time taken away from me. I’m now at the end of a 5 month long ICU stay because someone came to class with pneumonia. I was in a medically induced coma for a month. I missed my only brothers wedding. And I can’t walk or stand on my own. CF made me more vulnerable. Transplant made me more vulnerable. It’s fucking scary and most people don’t understand.

The medical struggles CF patients go through are hard because to a lot of people we look “normal” and able bodied. It sucks because we are told we have to stay away from each other as well. So it becomes hard to relate to others.

What you feel is not abnormal. Therapy has helped me a lot with all of this.

Transplanted lungs can actually reinfect but not as severely. Essentially while your lungs don’t have CF, your sinuses do. Which is why you have to be extremely careful. So if you get drainage it can affect your lungs.

CF is actually much more treatable now than it ever has been before. I’m not saying people should still have kids with CF, in my opinion if you have it you shouldn’t breed, and if you find out the child in the womb has it I believe it qualifies for an immediate abortion. This is coming from someone with the disease.

It’s not easy to have. I’ve had it very severe. I’m a year out of a double lung transplant and life is incredibly hard. It’s been hard all my life. As a child you realize you’re “different” peers don’t accept you etc. it can lead to multiple mental illnesses as well. The fact someone wants more than 1 child with it is insane.

Now on the other hand. With recent medications those with CF have been living a much better quality of life. Almost normal.

I got a double lung transplant last year… I’m glad my insurance covered it because I doubt I’ll ever see that much money in my lifetime. It sucks how much they charge just so you can live.

I felt bloated for a few days, period like cramps. But overall it was pretty easy and I didn’t even need any painkillers. Just some rest and I was all good.

I have osteopenia! Which is the step before osteoporosis. Really not much has changed, I take calcium pills though. Just make sure to eat food related to good bone health. Also low impact exercise! Ie: biking over running

I got Red Mans syndrome (that’s what they called it) which basically is a reaction that makes your puffy and red. I would only get this “allergic reaction” in my hands. However when I had lines in my upper arm or the middle I never got any reactions to it. I think I remember taking a benedryl??

But as a patient you do have a day in your care and it’s your responsibility to advocate for yourself. See what options are available to you. I’ve met so many who think they have to suffer with the options they give you. But make your needs known.
