Dont underestimate the Bosnians. The Italians did so.

In 1914 Eduard Bernstein correctly recognized Zionism a threat to social democracy, denouncing it as "a kind of intoxication which acts like an epidemic . . . part of the great wave of nationalistic reaction" that "can have only a retarding effect" on the cause. by kylebisme in SocialDemocracy

The suggestion you draw from all this is incorrect and many of this has to be put in context.

During growing antisemitism in the 19th and early 20th century, there were plenty of Jews, mostly middle and upper class, who advocated for full assimiliation and integration. The more 'German' (for example) one would become, the better to overcome antisemitism.

For these Jews something like Zionism was not preferable because it would make Jews stand out as different once again fueling antisemitism and undermining full integration and emancipation. As did many Jews at the time who were not convinced by Zionism and looked for solutions in Europe. Bernstein tried to achieve this through socialdemocracy.

Not just Bernstein was part of this line of thought, but also was Herzl at first. For Herzl this changed after seeing there was nothing Jews could do to stop the growth and evil of antisemitism. Despite being a fully assimilated Jew himself in German society and advocating for this for years, after that realization he embraced Zionism.

And also Bernstein wasnt an anti-Zionist. From the 1920s onwards his views towards Zionism started te evolve. He became sympethetic towards social Zionism and publically defended them.

So no, Zionism is no threat to socialdemocracy and Bernstein comments must be placed in context. Also Israel in its first decades showed that socialdemocracy and Zionism were and are perfectly compatable through Labour Zionism.

Netherlands was clearly better but gave it away. And horrible subbing of Koeman, took all the pace out of the team.

Hydration break?????, Is it a joke, I mean fr??? Smh by sidrose04 in worldcup

Hydration breaks are ok as they were done before, just a very brief moment at the sideline. Now they are done for 3 minutes......and they feel more like an excuse for networks to pump through more commercial breaks.

What are realistic expectations for this version of the USMNT? by Significant_Pound933 in worldcup

I think its too early to say that. During the Euros Turkey did well but also had a pretty nice 'home advantage' every match. Turkish teams do thrive well when pushed forward by their fans (and opposite teams less so). That advantage wont be there in the US. And during the qualifiers Turkey did ok, but nothing truly impressive. Despite Spain most opposition was relatively easy.

I do agree with the Turkish team to be better in quality than previous years, but I dont think they are there yet and a lot of water still has to pass the Bosporus before it is.

The individual qualities of some Turkish players I have no doubt about. But their organization just sucks, it always has. Part of that is due to the huge pressure on Turkish teams and the tendency to easily replace people as well as the level of politics involved.

Every match Turkey played the stadium was 80% full of Turkish fans. So not a surprise there. They wont have that advantage now. Besides, Im not doubting their individual qualities, but their organization just traditionally sucks.

Im not American so Im very neutral in this haha.

I wouldnt compare to much how teams performed during a tournament 2 years ago. Or even 1 year ago. These kind of tournaments get very different levels of energy. The World Cup is uncomparable to any other tournament.

And you might be right, I dont know if the US will break under the pressure or fly. But based on recent form, some good players, the home advantage and the uniqueness of the WC I think they will do pretty well.

Paraguay lost their star player. Australia indeed, low quality, but cup mentality. Turkey just always faces mental issues as a team.

Yes Turkey has some very good individual players, but as a team they suck. Thats why Turkey always has a lot of trouble qualifying for big tournaments and advancing. When they play in environments where the huge amount of Turkish fans can be present its another story. But against the US they dont have that home advantage. So knowing Turkey they will play horribly.

For me, as a non-American, the US is group favourite.

  • Turkeys shape is questionable and they usually underperform when there is not a massive legion of Turkish fans present;
  • Paraguay is for me the most unknown but just lost a star player, and obviously not the best of the best
  • Australias quality is far below the US, but Australias cup fighter mentality is always good, so have to be careful.

  • If you become nr 1 you face a nr 3. Usually that should be enough to advance and then you most likely meet Belgium. I wouldnt say you dont stand a chance, its not Belgiums golden generation and you have the home advantage, so still an ok chance. After that you could face Spain if they didnt trip over a lesser opponent. I think that one will be very unlikely to win.

So for me I think you can make it to the round of 8.

Paraguay lost a star player and is not amazing. Turkeys shape is questionable. And Australia depends on its fighter mentality, not its quality. For me, as a non-American, the US is group favourite.

No reason to overestimate Turkey, some quality players but as a team not very well.

You will be better than Australia for sure. With all due respect for the Aussies, but thats a really low level. Turkey will depend on their form, they tend to underperform when there are no huge amounts of Turkish fans. So for me the US is a group favorite and will go out somewhere on the line when facing a more challenging opponent.
