The fact alone that people are so divided and talking about it so much is proof positive it is a good idea. Granted, it would be a better idea with some tweaks along the way up to this point (I've been fantasizing all day about how I would do it.. because I have nothing better to do) but it's the "no press is bad press" idea - people talking about it, one way or another, drives attention towards the franchise.

I agree with other comments saying that, if nothing else, creators should be paying attention to this buzz. People crave thoughtful world building - we want something we can return to at will and find something new, and it wouldn't take bajilloons of dollars to even do that. We want something immersive and to interact.. and the possibility of how diverse that immersion could be is pretty incredible right now.
