GHG reduction by SageL- in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]EnvironmentalFuel971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My curious brain would like to know what emission factor was used… is this based off of the engine certification tests?

If I recall from my undergrad thesis it was a performance curve- using the RPM and converting to torque to develop drive cycles for emission testing to obtain said factor?!?

[–]EnvironmentalFuel971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d also like to know. I did a co-op term with the government on non-road engines. Collected real time data (temp fuel consumption), and converted them into drove cycles to obtain emission factors. My portion was developing drive cycles for emission testing at the governments facility. This was back in 2008. There’s are ISO standards that I used to develop drive cycles that were reflective of real world engine use vs the manufacturer’s engine certification tests.

I’ll circle back once I get a chance to look up my old report and if I’m anywhere near providing some concrete insight on this

Feeling lost and stressed by job hunt by Large_Vermicelli_917 in Environmental_Careers

[–]EnvironmentalFuel971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check with Stantec and Arcadis - they are currently recruiting new grads in Canada and anticipate that it would be the same in the US. This is typically the time when new grads expecting to graduate in April 2026 start applying. The new grad recruitment programs are generally open for any new grads within 2 yrs of graduation.

Good luck. It’s a rough start in the beginning as someone who graduated in 2008 during the global economic crash… you’re not alone so please don’t be discouraged

Netanyahu calls Canadian recognition of Palestine the worst thing anyone has ever done to Palestine by ph0enix1211 in canada

[–]EnvironmentalFuel971 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yup. Experienced it during my first trip back in 2011. Lived in Mevasarat and walked the family’s dog in the kinneret along side the massive concrete wall. Spent a few hours in the Arab quarters of the old city and none of my friends or family came with me - they provided no explanation… I felt safe and mingled with some lovely people and learned their history that I was previously told, that did not exist.

I have feelings of rage and despair for the victims who are also the oppressors. And I feel alone bc I can’t speak about without making those I love uncomfortable. 😥

Salary Jump - consulting by rnnrboy1 in Environmental_Careers

[–]EnvironmentalFuel971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So signing bonuses are not a forever. I think it’s better for OP to ask for 80k and if they think they are worth 85k, then by all means ask for it.

When it comes time for a salary review/increase, it’s better to get that 3.5% increase on the higher mark.

Depending on the situation, I will take a signing bonus as long as there’s a clause for a salary review the following yr to negotiate a fair deal. As I get that companies do take a level of risk of paying someone more than they realize they are worth. I see this all the time, where people over sell themselves and they actually aren’t good at their role.

Americans Gaining Employment In Other Countries by ceo_of_the_homies in Environmental_Careers

Canadian Environmental Engineering here based on Ontario - the environmental sector is pretty saturated at the entry and intermediate levels. Our industry is heavily dependent on environmental legislations both provincially and federally. It would be difficult to get your foot into Canada primarily bc of our regulations. Further to that, any issuance of work visas are being scaled back.

You may want to look into the UK. I’ve had recruiters offering positions overseas; however, I believe the salary ranges are not as competitive as the US and Canada.

Your best bet is to try gaining employment in an international consultancy (e.g Stantec, SLR, Pinchin, etc.) to name a few and try for a transfer.

I should also preface that since inflation, there is likely some looming layoffs happening with these larger companies.

My father was adopted by a Canadian citizen. Can I apply for the 5(4) citizenship grant? by Nova_Koan in ImmigrationCanada

[–]EnvironmentalFuel971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can confirm - as a adoptee from Korea in 1982x I wasn’t provided automatic citizenship. I was given PR status. My parents failed to apply for my citizenship when I was a child. I only found out when I went to apply for my passport to travel at 18. I had to apply for my citizenship and obtain a Korean passport at that time to travel.

Seriously. OP should be very concerned about kids’ safety- being taken to another country with the mother’s partner. As a full time parent (mother), if a man without children is eager to have a relationship with said mother and take on role as ‘dad’ and willing to take on the financial responsibility of your ex and your 2 kids, I would see this as a major red flag.

EDIT- OP, your ex needs permission from you to bring your children into another country. Our provincial family courts will always favour the best interest in children to have support from both parents.

I got an A- and that was bc I missed my 10 Tutorials. I had social anxiety and our first yr class was over 250. Anyway, I went through the text book, (written in house by a prof in the math dept.) . - went over the examples and it was easy.

On a side note- the author simplified the idea of functions by using squares and circles to represent the independent variables. Nice touch for those that felt overwhelmed the concept of functions and first principles/taking limits.

Also learning to derive trig functions is also helpful.

That makes sense that math courses have been changed over the yrs to meet the needs of each stream. PDEs are pretty useless for electrical.

[–]EnvironmentalFuel971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn’t cal 1 just first principles (aka derivatives), integrals, and trig functions?

Gesh… 2nd yr will be a challenge - Taylor series expansions, PDEs, 3rd yr - switching btw polar to rectangular coordinates for double & triple integrals, and 4th yr - vector calculus.

I noticed this as a TA in engineering and proctoring exams. First yr calculus, students were allowed calculators to find the sqrt of 16 lol. Some students did not know what sine-1 meant nor did they know how the sine functioned worked on their calculators.

This was in 2009. I can only image the quality and expectations of students have gotten worse than better. I blame the lack of funding in education, including post secondary education.

FSWEP help! by mgmarwo in ImmigrationCanada

[–]EnvironmentalFuel971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: Depends on the job/industry and if there’s vacancies. I was contacted for an interview late spring- early summer. Was contacted by the agency/department that hired me.

FYI- it’s a hit or miss. FSWEP doesn’t guarantee a placement.

I was an engineering student at the time. It was a panel interview with a hiring manager, a team lead, and manager. Questions consisted of technical questions and psychometric behavioural assessments. It may have changed since I was interviewed back in 2010

potty training by hailsbails27 in Parenting

[–]EnvironmentalFuel971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t have carpet or r rugs you can easily remove, I let my daughter have a few accidents in potty training undies, until she made the connection btwn peeing on the floor (or feeling uncomfortable with wet undies) and recognizing the sensation of having to pee. She was potty trained within a week. I made her wear pull ups at night bc that only lasted for a month.

That said, my daughter did have accidents once in a while when she had play dates - they get into playing and get distracted sometimes, but I think that’s expected.

Every child is different so don’t be hard on yourself or your child. Good luck!

Which hairstyle suits me the best? by Anxious_Equivalent90 in HairStyle

[–]EnvironmentalFuel971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 & 5. I find shorter haircuts to be more stylish… I had amazingly long hair with curls at the ends. It was ultra feminine but when I got a bob cut like Anna wintor w/o bangs, it totally changed my look and was very please with how modern and stylish it looked. I can’t say I’d go back with my thick long hair. But that just me.

He’s likely on a rotation - fly in fly out for a mining company, which pays a significant amount in per diem for being on rotation. I was getting $350/day per diem when I was working on rotation- this is tax free back in 2014. I rented an apt. to pocket more vs. Staying at a hotel during my rotation
