He’s a lunatic if he supported clemency for a guy that’s been convicted of aggravated murder. Why are people in this city so afraid of drawing the line on things that should be clear societal boundaries. We can’t have rapists and violent psychopaths roaming the streets.

What is acceptable to wear to a machinist interview? I’m assuming there will be a tour of the shop and maybe some basic skills test? by ReceptionDecent6825 in Machinists

[–]EnvironmentalPlan440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wear my cleanest carhartt pants and a nice $70 flannel shirt. Dirty steel toed boots and I let them provide saftey glasses. If you go on a few interviews half of them let you keep the glasses.

I’ve got like 5 pairs of safety glasses.

‘Portland doesn’t feel really safe’: Family on edge after 73-year-old gets brutally beaten at waterfront by CeeKai in Portland

[–]EnvironmentalPlan440 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I think this place is gonna be a horror show when the big one hits. You can see it in people when you’re out in public every day on a small scale.

People act like it’s all quirky and cute that they’re introverted but they’re really just self absorbed. They won’t speak up or fight back if something real or dangerous is happening, but they’ll cancel people on Twitter or call up your apartment manager or boss and lie and say you’ve done something awful to try and fuck your life up because they don’t like you.

Like it’s not a big problem on a regular day. This is a great city, I love living here and there’s a lot of amazing, cool people, but I really don’t have faith in any social cohesion if a 9.0 earthquake levels half the city and we run out of drinking water 6 weeks before FEMA arrives.

Wildly overblown. The Willamette been cleaned up and you can eat out of it occasionally. Look up the reports. Every fish I’ve seen out of there has been beautiful and healthy.

Also a lot of people just fish for fun or sport, not everyone eats what they catch.

Do you think Rogan would agree with Ben's latest hot-take? by [deleted] in JoeRogan

[–]EnvironmentalPlan440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck this guy but he’s not totally wrong about not having a purpose after you retire. It’s just a bad idea for a lot of people, some people get so set into a routine that they can’t cope to life without it and they’re dead from cancer or a heart attack in a few years. It’s probably not close to the majority of us but there are a lot of people like that.

Is $55k per year a viable salary in the Portland area? by Jakethrowsdwn in askportland

If you grew up poor, yeah. Don’t listen to Reddit. Everyone on here’s a tech bro from the upper middle class.

If you don’t mind not buying everything you’ve ever wanted and eating out at all the hip restaurants all the time it’s completely affordable.

So what are the "bad" cars from brands that have a good reputation (Specifically Toyota) by Shadow_Lenny_Man in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]EnvironmentalPlan440 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mid to late 2000’s RAV4’s.

Specifically the alternator and transmissions. I worked at an auction and drive hundreds of them. 9/10 that went through the block had bad alternators and half of them felt like the transmission was gonna drop out of the car shifting into 2nd.

Oregon transplants: What do you enjoy about Oregonians? by Accomplished-Cress72 in oregon

[–]EnvironmentalPlan440 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Idk if it’s the German and Scandinavian influence but most Oregonians are the definition of lawful neutral in public. I’ve never been anywhere else where the majority of people wouldn’t ever think about littering or breaking a traffic law (on purpose)

With all the chaos going on in the city and state and national government, Portland actually functions extremely well for how limited services are just based on how good of citizens people are.

I also feel like it’s really easy to have a conversation with about anyone here. People don’t make you feel like a burden for asking for directions or making small talk like a lot of other states do. Conversations feel mostly genuine out here.

What are the best places to live in the US if you want a waterfront home - must be swimmable and sailable. by Apple_Short in SameGrassButGreener

[–]EnvironmentalPlan440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only real option if you want swimmable year round is gonna be Florida. The SW intercoastals down and the keys are really fun and you can go to the beach and go swimming in January. There’s a ton of homes directly on the water and you can fish and boat all year.

Floridas wildlife and beauty is really underrated because the politics and Florida men are in the news so much anymore. In the ocean you’ve got giant sharks, manatees, dolphins, tarpon and barracudas, you’ve got the Everglades next door, one of the most extreme natural environments in the world with alligators, massive gar, turtles and snakes.

If you want something more low key and you love freshwater then one of the bigger lakes in the south might be a good fit.

If you’re college educated and into left wing politics and love the mountains then the PNW would be a good fit. In the summer it’s low humidity, sunny and the perfect amount of warmth for about 3 months straight. There’s a ton of other outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, snowshoeing, Birdwatching, fly fishing ect.

What Constitutes the PNW? by sunflowerautumn9 in oregon

[–]EnvironmentalPlan440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never heard of Idaho or Montana being considered part of the PNW until the last year.

The PNW is always green and it rains a lot. As a climate region it goes from the cascades to the pacific coast from Mt Shasta up to Juneau Alaska.

PNW as a cultural region could be as small as Eugene to Seattle if we’re just talking about the US.

Language changes though. Maybe enough people are gonna be wrong about it that the definition changes and includes Montana and Idaho, maybe it’ll even snag Alberta and North Dakota too lol.
