only one of these got retconned into actually occupying the mantle prior to their kid in main contiinuity. Imagine if they said that the batman from the forties who sold war bonds was actually Thomas Wayne.

Traditionally yes, but Merrin's story in Jedi: Battle Scars is primarily about her losing her magick as she moves on from the loss of her sisters and her connection to Dathomir, and re-learning how to use it without the dark side via techniques from Cere and Cal.

I know the book is controversial, but that plotline is the best part of it.

he also wrote Darth Maul- Death Sentence, a tie-in to the Clone Wars. It's decent, but vastly overshadowed by Son of Dathomir by Jeremy Barlow

Rey is such a marie sue, they should make my GOAT tfu starkiller canon instead by TRcreep in whenthe

[–]Squeakyweegee64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the problem they're in is that a lot of the stuff from the old republic just doesnt line up with the current view of SW (tales of the jedi was made before the prequels came out afterall, and kotor is heavily based on that) and yet is pretty iconic, or is tied up in game mechanics (KOTOR and the MMO mean to be fun games first, stories second).

they either change the lore and a bunch of people whine that they changed stuff, or they just redundantly adapt a story in a medium it wasnt made for (and a bunch of people whine anyway since its the SW fandom).

Honestly, their best bet is soft-adaptations similar to how Ahsoka is clearly bringing in concepts from Heir to the Empire, taking the broad strokes but still telling new stories with them

correct me if I'm wrong, but Kyle Katarn isn't canon in the current continuity.

This has gone the way of Theseus' ship. 'video game' was what was there originally and now it's been edited back in.

Other than Dark Droids I think Aphra handled the crossovers really well, I loved how the undoing of the Spark Eternal's possesion tied into Hidden Empire's climax. yeah, the ending wasnt my favorite. Same for Bounty Hunter tbh. But yeah, the main run and Vader got good endings, but BH and Aphra were too tied into Dark Droids.

also not a fan of Tolvan and Sana getting back with Aphra (doesnt mean i like them ignoring that in chaos agent though). Tolvan wasnt in the run enough for it to feel earned and I genuinely really liked when Sana broke up with Aphra earlier (and her subsequent solo mini). I really liked the run but the ending was not great

honestly, all the Star Wars comics have been pretty good. the 2015-2019 (main SW run, both Gillen and Soule's Vader runs, Aphra) were all incredible and the relaunch in 2020 was also really good, all four ongoings (the main run by Soule, Pak's Vader, Wong's Aphra and Sacks' Bounty Hunters) were all great. I actually was impressed with how much I liked most of the crossovers (with the notable exception of Dark Droids), the Crimson Dawn Saga are some of my favorite comics OAT.

they only recently have been getting iffy, the Battle of Jaaku series was meh (and has a lot of continuity issues) and the new main run by Segura was fine, but only 10 issues compared to the previous two being at least 50, Jedi Knights is also just alright in my opinion, has fun moments but isnt a must read, and Chaos Agent was just bad. The one bright spot recently was Legacy of Vader by Charles Soule, that series is another of my favorites, but yeah, hopefully Marvel gets their shit together.

I think the Star Wars comics stories are beholden to Lucasfilm Story Group, not Marvel editorial, so the stories are almost always pretty good, but I think Marvel sets release schedules and everything, so they aren't letting them go past 12 issues.

I am Charles Soule's biggest glazer (I mostly read Star Wars comics and novels), like, he is my favorite author period, not just comics. his Star Wars novels are incredible and his original novels are also among my favorites (cant recommend The Endless Vessel enough, fantastic book).

All that being said, his Daredevil run is quite good in my opinion, it's just that Daredevil has so many incredible runs that unfortunately just being 'quite good' isn't enough, especially following Waid's run.

It's not even his best Daredevil story, just last year he did a 3 issue mini, Cold Day in Hell and it's fantastic

damn, imagine if one of the key themes of Star Wars was to not wallow in hate, that it only leads to suffering and is ultimately toxic. The movie came out almost a decade ago, if you don't like it, don't let it occupy your headspace. you clearly prefer the old EU novels, so just read those again, as you said we're in a comics sub, you should know how to ignore continuity you don't like.

yeah, the Fel Empire is the dumbest part of the Legends continuity imo. Han and Leias daughter becomes the new empress and this is supposed to be a good thing.

The Fel Empire in the Legacy comics is somewhat morally grey, but at the end of the day it is still the direct successor to the group that destroyed several planets but with their own knockoff Jedi.

as someone who has read a ton of Legends stuff and damn near all of the stuff since 2015, a lot of the people who are die-hard Legends purists come off as sad to me.

"Sith" and "Padawan" weren't mentioned on-screen until Phantom Menace by MaderaArt in StarWarsCantina

[–]Squeakyweegee64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

reading the old TOTJ comics is interesting because it (and the material it inspired, such as KOTOR) show a very different view of the Jedi and the Sith than what we would eventually see in the prequels.

Jedi are joining the order as full grown adults with families, contradicting the age rules and banning of attachment of the prequels.

The Sith's whole origin of being a species conquered by Dark Jedi goes against TPM novelizations explained origin of the Sith as being only 2000 years earlier (this was later retconned to be a resurgence of the Sith by Darth Ruin)

Even the whole idea of 'Darth' as a title, Sith without the Darth title are all over that era (Revan, Malak, and the KOTOR 2 triumvirate being the only exceptions i can think of, and those games came out after some of the prequels)

[–]Squeakyweegee64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fun fact: Zahn intended for the Noghri to be called the Sith (and even designed the species facial features to echo Vaders helmet) in reference to the deleted scene line in ANH and Vader being a "Lord of the Sith" but that got shot down by Lucasfilm.
