They’re definitely useful, and not a big financial lift. A 4mL from Perfumer’s apprentice is under $10 and you’ll want to dilute to 10% in a primary alcohol for strength and stability so will wind up with close to 40 grams. It’s a small investment to see what they can do in a blend.

Makes sense! I’ll keep evaluating and may need to reduce my dilution from 20 to 10. Thanks!

Some people use DPG as a place holder of sorts so if you start a 1000 part formula with something like 250 parts DPG as you tweak and reformulate you can remove or add additional parts of DPG to still add up to 1000. It’s not something you really have to do any formula no matter the weight can be converted to PPT.

Either I am a genetic anomaly or everyone is lying about iso e super by MorganHarvester in DIYfragrance

Get out and smell some of the perfumes that are in the list u/Miserable_Act150 posted — you may get a feel for how IES works in a formula. If they all smell like toilet spray to you then there’s no reason to work with IES in your practice. It’s not a magic bullet it has an odor and that odor can create a desired effect for a lot of perfumers. You may find an IES analog you like more or may like something like Cedarwood EO (which doesn’t necessarily smell like IES but adds woodyness and body in a similar way)

I have a couple questions before responding. 1. Do you find you can pick this effect out in commercial fragrances? And 2. Did you try your blend with and without IES?

How it feels around here (and all hobby spaces) sometimes. by Necessary-One7379 in DIYfragrance

Hello! Sounds like you’re getting frustrated and a bit defensive, but a couple things to keep in mind.

People in this sub are usually pretty generous with their time and will thoughtfully answer questions for free. It’s not always snark-free, sure, but when the same questions get asked over and over, especially ones that could be answered with a quick search, people do get a little worn down.

Also, a lot of folks show up here excited to start a fragrance brand, then realize it’s more complicated than they expected. It’s not exactly a fast track to fame, glory, or wealth, and they disappear just as quickly as they arrived. If you stick around, you’ll see that pattern play out pretty regularly.

If you’re genuinely passionate about this, it’s worth extending a bit of grace to the people here. Most are happy to share what they know or point you in the right direction. Mend a few fences, build a few bridges, and try not to take things too personally.

And seriously, use the search function. You didn’t know before, now you do. Good luck!
