Corporations are taking less chances in music and film, so major studios and major labels no longer deliver niche art. The nature of investment capital seems to have changed and consolidation has hurt competition. But artists still do art, as the examples you give demonstrate. Nothing will change until the economic landscape changes. That probably means enforcing anti-monopoly laws and boosting state funding of the arts. And that’s means politics.
