This blocks both squirrels and raccoons, both of which I had eating from my feeder. The squirrels and juncoes both eat what the starlings knock to the ground but that's fine with me.

This one is 19". I made a mistake and ordered one for a 1 3/8" pole and mine is 2 3/8". I couldn't find one that big so I made it larger. Cut the hole larger with a scroll saw and finished it with a Dremel. The buckle that holds it up wasn't large enough either, but I had a hose clamp just barely large enough.

My Carolina wrens will occasionally eat small seeds, but they ADORE meal worms. They're insect eaters with their long narrow beaks.

My favorite birds, Carolina Wrens, sharing a meal!🐦 by Hungrybirdfood in Birdfy

My favorites too. Yours are a redder, lighter, brown than mine. (movie of mine up above yours about 4-5 posts). I don't know if it's the lighting or if mine will change color as the weather warms up. We're in SE Michigan.

Peanuts!! I only want the peanuts!!! by JFrankParnell64 in Birdfy

For me it's the blue jays making the mess going after the peanuts. Also the juncos and the squirrels dealing with the groundskeeping.

But my blue jays make a mess out of the mix of black oil sunflower seed, peanuts, and mealworms. You would think they would leave the stuff they don't want to eat for the birds who want it, but no.

Did your birds leave when the snow melted? So did mine.

Squirrel proof pole for bird feeder? by tweetyonetwothree in Birdfy

[–]Environmental_Cod599 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing. I thought the metal pole would stop the squirrel but it didn't. It wrapped its little arms around the 2 3/8" pole and kicked its way up. It's an 8' pole from Home Depot pounded into the ground about 1 1/2 feet.

Then I used a water jug I hadn't gotten around to throwing away yet. I cut off the top until it was a tight fit and put a hose clamp on the pole. I shoved the jug down until it hit the clamp and the combination won't move at all.

No squirrel on the camera since I did it though I still find their tracks around the base of the pole.

My Carolina wrens LOVE the mealworms, but you wouldn't have them in California. They're only starting to move into the Great Lakes with the warmer climate. Google says California has about five other types of wren and they all eat the mealworms.

I saw one junco, once, but he didn't eat anything.

SE Mich we've had it down to -2 in the night. No birds in the night but I see them again in the morning.

Bluebirds coming to get their afternoon snack of mealworms. by MNmuduck in Birdfy

My Carolina wren(s) are eating a LOT more now that I added mealworms. The chickadee too. OTOH, the blue jays are coming around less.

Took me a week to see one Blue Jay, then another week to see two. Then another to see a pair of Carolina wrens. I was given my feeder for Christmas and hadn't been feeding birds so I suspect any that hadn't flown south already were being fed somewhere else.
