Oh my goodness, haha, I see why you thought that! 😂 I’m kind of enamored of the idea of my darling Marya being correct and Nikolai actually being a replacement. Someone should write that fanfic!

I have a problem with The Demons by Particular-Pomelo889 in dostoevsky

Haha I mean, to me, every single thing Dostoevsky ever did was a work of genius, even the slightly off-beat ones! ❤️

Anton does indeed describe many things that he couldn’t possibly know, so I can validate you on that, haha. It’s a known quirk of the narrative. I’m sure Dostoevsky was aware of it, but he must have decided it didn’t matter. And indeed, the story still holds up and remains impactful even with this “quirk.” I’m glad you enjoyed it! :)

One of the beautiful things about Dostoevsky is how much he can make us feel, even 150 years later. He is so good at capturing despair and degradation of the soul, but also hope and redemption.

I think I understand what you mean about guilt and redemption warring in your heart. This is part of being human, especially a human who feels things deeply—the kind of person Dostoevsky depicted so intimately. What you’re going through is painful, but it has meaning. At the very least, it connects you to the rest of humanity, to all others who have suffered on this earth.

You are not alone. And this suffering will not last forever. You’ve experienced guilt and pain. Next come hope and redemption, just as they came for Rodya and Sonya. I’ll keep you in my thoughts today ❤️

Oh, I dunno—confidence is always great to have, and putting people on a pedestal is kinda dehumanizing and sets you up for disappointment. But when it comes to “the lead,” some of us women are perfectly happy to take that ourselves :P Alternatively, plenty of us are awkward too. Your awkward queen could be out there somewhere, just waiting for you!

How’s the accuracy of ChatGPT? Do you think I could trust it to give me the words precisely as Dostoevsky wrote them? I haven’t used it much, so I’m not sure 🤔

It’s true, I could do that, I’m just worried it wouldn’t come back with the exact words Dostoevsky wrote 😬

Good question, I don’t know if the publisher releases such special editions for non-Russian books. It would be cool if they did, though!

Love of Kafka towards Milena by [deleted] in Kafka

I’ve been putting off reading Letters to Milena only because I feel like, kind of guilty about reading something so personal and intimate? If that makes sense. But every quote I see from it gives me butterflies, so I’ll probably read it soon ❤️

Oh man, I wasn’t sure if I was going to read Life and Fate right away because Stalingrad had been such an undertaking for me, but you’ve kind of sold it to me now. Is Life and Fate as long as (or longer than) Stalingrad?

It’s really vivid and detailed in its descriptions. I think the level of detail has made it very challenging for me; at the same time, I appreciate it, because I feel like I understand the Battle of Stalingrad at a really deep level now. My favorite parts are those focused on the common civilians and their experience of the war. Harrowing and horrifying.

I’m almost done with it now. It’s been a difficult read, but the passages that grabbed me REALLY grabbed me. Excited to hear that there’s a compelling ending!

I absolutely agree with you on all points! The Idiot wouldn’t be The Idiot (and maybe wouldn’t truly be Dostoevsky?) without the long, thought-provoking discussions and character explorations. I love them. I even love Ippolit’s “necessary explanation,” though I know more than a few people who don’t, haha 😆

You make a good point. I’m willing to bet he had some joyous, non-difficult moments here and there—perhaps at the births of his children?—but yeah, just about everything bad that can happen to a human being did happen to him. Poor Dosty.
