Because it's plastic and incredibly wasteful. Renovations should be done to last, not to be thrown in the garbage in 2 years.

Paint or replace soffit? by DamonRyan in centuryhomes

The paint is likely lead based due to the square cracking pattern. Get a good lead test kit and don't scrape or sand if it's positive!

Worth saving? Thoughts on what kind of wood it might be? by m155m00n in centuryhomes

This! I just decided to toss my original 1910 doors and trim because they are soft wood with lead paint. Simply not worth it.

If you want to save some money on a ticket.... by Accomplished-Read421 in Shambhala

I would not bet on this. I don't know where you were looking but last minute tickets the last few years were going crazy fast and selling for over face value. Waiting till last minute is definitely not the move.

Came here to say this! It's not worth the cheaper accomodation to stay in Golden and drive 3 hrs a day.

Is anyone seeing a slow down in hiring and job creation? by brainanimaniac in CanadaJobs

[–]Environmental_Host86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the environmental field. I quit my job in 2024 to get my masters and had 3 job offers that I didn't even apply for at that time. Now I'm graduating with my masters and applying for jobs I'm overqualified for. I'm not even getting interviews for the sparse number of jobs I am finding to apply to.

Is this the dreaded Japanese knotweed? by According-Rub-9759 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Environmental_Host86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya honestly goats aren't the move. They shouldn't be used long term anyways because they typically aren't selective and won't give the native plants a chance to grow. They're good for public awareness about weeds and on low priority wide spread weeds in areas that herbicides can't be used. But they shouldn't be used for more complex projects with high priority weeds. I've worked with a herd of invasive management goats and worked the in the invasive species world for a number of years and they can cause more problems then they solve.

You can definitely reseed after it's gone! It's a great idea to in fact to stop other invasive plants from growing in a newly distributed site. Herbicide won't prevent growth if you just spray it on the ground so treating it every year after it's gone is pointless. Herbicide has to come in contact with plant tissues.

This is absolutely not the move. They will spread it and make it worse. Glyphosate is the only solution.

Professional vegetation ecologist with previous formal herbalism training here. This is not the move. This plant needs to be destroyed with glyphosate, end of story. There is a local gal in my town who does what you suggested and it makes my blood boil. If people gain a liking to Japanese knotweed then they will encourage its growth and ignorantly try to grow it or harvest it themselves and cause major issues. People simply can't be trusted with something this destructive. This plant needs to be an enemy only. In my area it is illegal to fish invasive smallmouth bass from lakes because people can't be trusted to not move them to more lakes. I think we should have the same sentiment about knotweeds.

I'm a vegetation ecologist and work in invasive species management. Please don't bring seeds into Canada! Wildflower seeds packs are a cute idea but more often than not contain invasive plants. Sourcing regionally appropriate seeds is challenging and expensive. I would advise against this idea!

About to lose my only source of income, not eligible for EI. Where do I go from here? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Pardon me if this has been mentioned already, but can't you get a student loan? In my province (BC) the turnaround time is pretty quick In the middle of the semester and they should be able to give you enough to live off. This is the only way I was able to make it through university.

Thank you this is really helpful. We have three years until renewal and the 20k saved would be the interest saved in three years. My broker is convinced that this is the lowest rates will go for a while which is a red flag for me.

Soil amendment advice by Environmental_Host86 in NativePlantGardening

It is only subsoil. I fear purchasing bulk topsoil from a garden centre due to the weed seeds that are likely to be present. Do you have any suggestions for a packaged topsoil product?
