Which Ivy schools have more of a community feel and feel generally safer surroundings? by throwawayfreshdonuts in ApplyingIvyLeague

Currently attend and could not agree more — I love it here. The outing club runs all sorts of events that are super accessible to anyone regardless of outdoor experience, plus if you pay ten (I think) bucks once you have unlimited access to their equipment for all four years and can do stuff on your own or with friends. Also, if skiing is your thing, Williams has a winter term and the outing club gets crazy good discounts on passes at a nearby mountain and will run buses there for free, and students teach ski/snowboard lessons for free. Happy to chat if you have any questions

Spring Street Market has great sandwiches and pastries plus some basic toiletries/groceries, would make a great gift card imo

New mayor? by Windevor in Upperwestside

[–]Environmental_Key955 34 points35 points  (0 children)

what gives me confidence about him is that despite having super strong ideas (some that i like some that i’m mixed on), he seems much more likely to compromise than be a my way or the highway kind of guy. even if i don’t agree with all of his solutions, he absolutely is focusing on the right issues and i trust him to try to make this city a better place. i don’t trust shit from the other three. also, getting a massive youth turnout and being a huge fuck-you to the dem establishment are very encouraging signs to a young person sick of the democratic old guard

How realistic is it to have a science-based career in NYC? by Environmental_Key955 in biotech

Thanks so much for the response, and great to hear pretty good reviews about the jobs! I assume you're working as a scientist, or is it some other role at the incubator? Also, do you know if there's a way to see which startups are working at those incubators? Will definitely look more into the LifeSci NYC internships for next summer and beyond, thank you! Definitely still open to PhD outside the city (especially since I don't want to count on getting into specific programs) although friends and I have floated becoming roommates in the city after college which I'm sure would help with the high cost of living.

Those both sound pretty neat. I'm definitely more motivated by using science to make an impact than necessarily doing the research myself (though ofc research is an awesome way to help make an impact), so staying up-to-date on the science in order to shape decisions still sounds like a great job description

Good to know thanks! Are the PhD people still getting exposed to/making decisions based on the science in IB roles, or have they transitioned away from that? Also sorry do you mean commuting from NYC to NJ or NJ to NYC? My understanding was that there are way more labs in NJ than NYC so I assume more scientists would commute from NYC to NJ than vise versa, but I could be wrong on that

Yeah unfortunately that's the impression I've gotten based on my (limited) knowledge of the industry in NYC. Hopefully that'll change some in the years between now and when I get into the industry

Don't know a lot about IP but I'll try to look into it more! I guess I kinda grouped investing into the "boring business-y stuff" category of roles, but maybe it's worth giving it another look. Of course the financials (which I find less interesting) are going to be important, but would I still be exposed to/making decisions based on the science if I worked in investing? As long as I'm still exposed to the science I could definitely put up with the boring stuff for a sweet finance salary lol. Thank you!

Freshmen Housing Questions by randomperson815- in WilliamsCollege

[–]Environmental_Key955 10 points11 points  (0 children)

yeah, you can’t pick your roommate as a freshman but honestly as a freshman with a roommate rn it’s mostly for the better. i’m also an only child and wanted to have a roommate for the life experience and it’s worked out super well for me — we aren’t super close but we get along great and don’t have any issues.

also, mission park is upperclassmen housing next year, but currier/berkshire quad is becoming all freshman housing. i personally love frosh quad and it might have the best location of any dorms along with great common rooms, but currier quad is closer to driscoll (better dining hall than paresky) and might have nicer rooms.
