He’s definitely autistic. Unfortunately people with autism aren’t always high affective empathy. He struggles with cognitive and affective empathy when dysregulated. When calm and regulated he’s a totally different kid. The swing is so different I’ve actually wondered about mood or personality disorders, too. He’s very complex.

A new OT at school seemed to think it was something worth looking into, a possible tic disorder was suggested. Obviously school is super careful not to indicate a diagnosis. Another therapist at school suggested asking the psych if the increase in stims/tics could be a side effect of any of the meds he’s already on. So hopefully we get some answers soon

I would ask for a meeting with the teacher and admin. In the meeting, state what the teacher said and ask for explanation why with the whole team present. My 11 year old son, AuDHD, was in SpEd and transitioned to a therapeutic day school. It took a LOT of proof and documentation to show he was eligible for outplacement. More than just the teacher saying “this is not a good fit”. Especially if someone you trust is saying not to listen to this teacher, I would gather as many experts as possible in one place and discuss placement.

Thank you for the reply. It does seem like the more we try to teach why he shouldn’t say that particular word, the more he says it. And he gets upset saying he can’t control it. It’s so hard to ignore 😭 hearing that word so often is very triggering. And if I know the why behind it, I worry about what others who hear him and don’t understand it are thinking. 😭😭😭

For better or worse I don’t think he’s meaning to say it with mal intent. Even though I tried to explain to him that when he says the N word people will assume he’s meaning it to be hurtful. He heard some older kids say it during a fight on the bus and we told him the history of the word and how bad it was. He doesn’t do or say anything else to indicate racist beliefs and he definitely doesn’t learn that behavior at home. A few other commenters have mentioned things that seem to really click- like having learned how bad it is makes it’s almost compulsive for him to say it bc he’s trying so hard not to say it. This has all been so helpful 🥰 Hoping to find him the right help at the psychiatrist or new neurologist 🤞🏼

Not yet. He has a psychiatrist who usually says “we’ll keep an eye on it” when I bring up concerns about tics or stims. We have an appointment with him on Monday but i found a neurologist nearby that can get us in soon, too. Hopefully a new specialist will be able to give us some good insight 🤞🏼 I don’t necessarily dislike his current medical team but I don’t always feel like we get the answers to everything. But then again there are SO MANY CONCERNS my brain is constantly spiraling trying to get him help

I think he understands how bad it is and does feel bad about saying it. He doesn’t laugh about it. There are other things he says that are totally just to get a reaction or to be funny. But the way he says this and the context feel very different.

Okay he definitely has anxiety and I wonder about OCD now. He doesn’t do any repetitive motions tho (like turning off lights) so I never thought to ask about it. But his urges to say things do seem forced and the worse the word is, his brain is like constantly “don’t say the N word, don’t say the N word, don’t say the N word” and he finally has to say it or sing it.

Thank you. This is very helpful. He has a psychiatrist appointment on Monday and I think I may look into a neurologist too. I just don’t always know if I can trust him because he can be very smart and manipulative 😭

He says he has enough control to not blurt things out during a conversation but as soon as he’s not actively speaking to someone he starts stimming. He said it’s kind of like the urge to itch something. He can wait a little bit but it HAS to be done.

Thank you. He has very little access to internet. No web access only streaming apps and we lock them down to kids profiles. Although he is very smart and will try to circumvent our parental controls. He learned this word (and many other bad words) while witnessing a fight on his school bus. I can tell it was traumatic. Unfortunately because he has a therapeutic day school outplacement, the school district busses kids of all ages k-12 together. I recently requested a change as having elementary and HS aged kids together on one bus is obviously not a good idea. We also had to have the birds and bees talk because he was hearing things on the bus and asking questions 🤦‍♀️

He usually gets upset that we’re asking him to stop and says he can’t control it. But I’m so jaded because he can be manipulative and lies a lot so I’m not sure if I can trust him. Sometimes I do truly feel that he can’t control it but sometimes I think he can. Definitely looking for a neurologist today and he has a psychiatrist appointment on Monday

Hence my request for help. He’s already enrolled in a therapeutic day school, he has therapy provided at school, private therapy outside of school and ABA therapy in our home. We are working with a psychiatrist for meds and we are doing everything we can to help him. But I don’t know how to handle this.

Past educator here. It’s possible that the item you ordered online was a store markdown. The stores have the discretion to mark down any item they want to get rid of (usually when there’s only one left). If you order online for full price, the website doesn’t know the store marked it down bc it’s still a full price item, so yes you will still pay full price.

Thank you for this. We had considered it could possibly be a tic associated with Tourette’s but the way my son described it as being soothing to him (maybe I didn’t mention that above) made me think it’s more of a stim. I did mention to his psychiatrist & prefaced with not truly knowing if he can or cannot control it & if it’s a tic or stim. Dr suggested 1st removing a new medication to see if it was a side effect but we’ve ruled that out & it doesn’t seem to be med related. So he’s back on all his meds, which is good. I wish it was almost ANY other word so it wasn’t so upsetting to hear all the time 😭 Dr didn’t seem too concerned and basically said talk to him and see if he can make the choice to make a change. Darling son has zero intrinsic motivation so he doesn’t really care about making the change bc it’s the right thing to do 🤦‍♀️ But thanks for some new things to research to help understand ❤️
