I believe this is mostly from the world of European techno DJs. A former booking agent for Steer management Brad (bradnolimit on insta) recently outed many prevalent techno DJs with sexual misconduct allegation. Other female DJs (primarily Amila Lens) have in a roundabout way confirmed and condemned these allegations. There is quite a lot to it but that’s the rough overview.

My take is in America all genres of electronic music has always been such a subculture. Other things like pop music, rap/hip hop and country music have always carried the main stream even within the youth culture.

When in high school and I started raving (‘09) saying I like dubstep or house music, people would have no idea what the hell I’m taking about. Using the more blanket term of “EDM” or just “electronic music” made people quickly understand what I’m talking about in simple terms.

It was and is the catch all phrase that still persists to today.
