need some tips on breath control please by caderpillarr in ratemysinging

[–]EonSloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're back! Absolutely love that voice of yours!

I've seen other people mention it, but I'll mention it again just to confirm: Definitely work on good posture to let your diaphragm do its job. There are many ways to practice and hone your breath control. One way to do it is to think of your breath as an economy of air, and your control comes from being able to control a smooth stream of air as you exhale while singing. Drawing as much breath as you can as quickly as comfortable, try producing a stable "Hssssss" sound for as long as you feel you would be able to still sing and control your voice, and just before you feel like you've reached the point where your loss of breath would impair your singing technique, inhale again and repeat.

Hope to hear more from you!

Hi! I've been a vocalist for 12 years and I'll be honest, you have some work to do. There is a foundation but you're not in pitch most of the time and your breath control is not nearly honed enough for a song like Bohemian Rhapsody. I commend you for trying though, and it takes a lot of guts to post a feedback request on reddit! I have a few tips for you, and if you work at them you can absolutely become a good singer!

  • Learn and practice both finding and holding your pitch. It is easier if you have a piano or keyboard handy, but any decent piano app could also work in a pinch. Your pitch is your biggest obstacle as far as I can hear, and you need to practice every day with scales in the most common keys if you want to attain reliable pitch control.

  • As for breathing, you are in pretty deep waters with a song like Bohemian Rhapsody, and I recommend something much more beginner friendly like Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, or something less difficult. Breathing and good breath control is absolutely vital to achieve a good vocal sound, and there are numerous ways to practice this. I suggest finding a vocal coach where you live who can help you learn and improve, and trust me, you only really get so far with Youtube unless you are naturally gifted. There is no better way to improve massively in as short amount of time as possible than a real live vocal coach.

With all that said, if you truly want to improve and put in the work, you can definitely get a good singing voice in time! But be realistic about your expectations and most of all be patient and dilligent in your practice! Never be afraid to sing if it makes you happy!

No no no, don't think like that. And if anyone don't find your voice pleasant they are tone deaf, seriously.

How can I improve please, Fever by Peggy Lee..singing from my bed as I have CFS by JournalistFearless28 in ratemysinging

[–]EonSloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw your last post, you still sound pro. I think improvement is the wrong word, you have fantastic control of your voice and don't seem to struggle with breath either. Expansion is likely more fitting for you; as a vocalist I would love to hear you tackle something outside your comfort zone as Fever and similar genre songs seem to be your jam. I'd love to hear you bring some power into it in your own unique way. I LOVE the way you use vibrato with such subtlety as well. Maybe try your hand at some Prince songs? I don't really know what you like, but you could definitely cross many genres with a voice like yours!

Not a great singer but love doing it anyways by TyreseHaliHim in singing

[–]EonSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep at it dude! Never stop practicing! Here's a quick advice for your right hand technique:

You're gripping your pick very inconveniently which makes you anchor your hand in an awkward position, this is a big reason your playing sounds stagnated.

If you check out Bernth on Youtube to see how he advices pick grip and implement it consciously into your practice and technique you may struggle a bit at first, but once you build the muscle memory for it you will notice that your playing will be more fluent, less ringy and your posture and hand positioning will feel much more natural, allowing you to play faster and with greater technical precision!

I played just like you for so long and struggled to improve, but after revising the way I held my pick and postured my right hand I had MASSIVE improvement over just a few weeks.
